Hair Loss - Gulf Shores, AL

I know that it is common for babies to lose their hair and grow it back but I am wondering if it is normal to fall out so fast. Today, I went to pick a piece of lint out of my son's hair and when I did, 4 or 5 hairs came with it. So, being surprised by this, I tried it again. Every time I slide my fingers down his hair, I get 4 or 5 strands of hair coming out. Is that normal?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I called the doctor's office yesterday and spoke with a nurse. She said that it was normal. He has had another layer of blonde hair growing under his brown hair for a couple of weeks - I call it his downy hair -- like soft duck feathers. It just surprised me that the hair he has was going so fast! Thank you everyone for responding. This website is great.

When my little girl lost her hair, it was like a "dandelion"...you could literally blow it off her head. It was alarming but she is now 16 months old and has really thick and healthy hair.

According to my experience this is totally normal. Both my boys lost their hair very early on and I remember picking them up after lying down to nurse them and the bed under their heads would be covered in tiny hairs. Or If I ran my hand over their heads hairs would fly off. Don't worry, I'm sure your baby is fine and healthy, but if it continues to concern you just mention it at his next check up.

I think that's normal-my daughter's hair was the same. She had cradle cap and I put oil on her head (before her bath), I rubbed it and my hand was covered with hair. That may have sped up the process because she was slick headed for about 2 months before her new hair started growing out.
I don't think you have a thing to worry about!

I'd say bring him to the pediatrician because it could be ok but I don't remember my babies' hair coming out that fast.

normal - and it will all grow in at the same time, giving a fuzzy, spikey hairdo. We called our daughter "buzz" 'cause it looked like she had a buzzcut. It doesn't last long!

I went through heck with my son teething it got really bad. I would not use the gel for fear of it numbing too much so I got teething tablets from the pharmacy and they worked wonders

I also had our first child in November and have experienced the hair loss phase. Our daughter didn't have a ton of hair at birth but she wasn't slick-headed either. Between the Christmas and New Year's holidays her hair fell out quickly everywhere except for her "ponytail patch" (what I call the area that remains at the nape of her neck/base of her skull). She did have a touch of cradle cap on the top of her head but that is not where the hair fell out the fastest or first even though I scrubbed that area. So to answer your question...I think it is normal for hair loss at this age and this quickly.
Since Valentine's Day my little girl has begun the hair regrowth and her little head is now covered with varying lengths of new hair! Embrace the baldness--it is cute in photos while it lasts & a lot easier to comb/control.

Are you using baby oil on his hair? I had my daughter in November also and she came out with a head full of hair and now she's almost completely bald! No matter what I did to her hair, it just wouldn't stay down so I started putting baby oil on it and her hair just started falling out. I've stopped using the baby oil but her hair is still falling out. I've asked a few people and they've all told me baby oil can cause hair to fall out. But it is normal in some babies because they will eventually grow them back.

My son lost his hair FAST, too! The little cushion that holds his head in the car seat was covered with hair after like, a day! It was disgusting! haha It looked like a dog had been rubbing against it for a long time. bleh. So I think it's pretty normal. And it DOES grow back, so don't worry. It just might come back a totally different color than you expect. (My son had black hair and now has blonde!)

It is very normal. The same thing happened to me with my baby. First I saw just a few strands in the bed then it became more and more. Of course I freaked out. I literally collected clumps of hair every morning and even after she took naps in her bed. It started happening when she became more mobile, turning from side to side. The baby hair was falling out. She stayed a little bald in a couple of spots but when she started to grow it back, it like happened over night. Just a couple of months later she had her beautiful bow hair back! Hope this helps!

My baby boy had that happen to him too. He lost all the hair on the top of his head and now, he is 5 months old, he has tons of hair in the same spot he lost it all. It was kind of weird but completely normal from my unerstanding. Don't worry.

I had a friend whose son had this. It ended up being Alopecia Areata. Do some research through internet and then go see your Pediatrician. I don't want to scare you but using my gut instinct.
