I have a 5.5 month baby girl and have been experience hair loss for the last couple of months. I know this is a normal occurance, but I'm interested in finding out what other new moms have done to help minimize their hair loss.

What can I do next?

My son's hair fell out in clumps all at once when he was about 5 or 6 months old. I called the doctor and she said it will grow back and this is normal. You want the baby hair to fall out and the more permanent hair to come in. SOmetimes it all comes out at once and other times little by little.

Have a saliva hormone test done which will give you an accurate hormone level. Also, have your thyroid levels tested. Are you tired, brittle nails, etc. Look up hypothyroidism online. Pregnancy and delivery can mess up the function of the tyroid. Good luck

I lost tons of hair and as far as I know there really isn't much you can do. I just had to try and keep the drain in our shower unclogged! It will stop eventually. I was told it can last up until around their first birthday but for me it started around 3 months and went on for about 3-4 months. I know it sucks. Hang in there!

Hi,
It's normal to lose quite a bit of hair when your baby is about 5-6 months old. What happens is you don't really lose much hair throughout your pregnancy. That's why pregnant women have such pretty hair! You lose a lot of hair now because you are catching up- it's the hair that would have fallen out normally when you were pregnant, but didn't. It's totally normal, but I don't think there is anything to do about it. I hope this helps!

I know exactly what you are going through. Everyone says it will get better. The only thing I can recommend is bangs. I had my hair layered and the bangs are cut modern to frame my face. Believe me I don't like my hair in my face, but I feel so much better that it is covered and my selfesteem has gone back up. I know it's hard, but your not the only one going through it. Wishing you luck!!!

My baby is 4 months old and I started losing hair at 3 months, and I am an herbalist and took herbs that are supposed to work for it. They didn't work for me, but I've given them to others who it did work for. There is a chinese formula called Si Wu Tang, and also just ask the person at a health food store for a western herbal kind for hair growth. Also, my chiro did some kind of energetic correction on me that worked. He said that pregnancy hormones affect the protein metabolism in the liver (due to it's processing so many hormones) and he did a little voodoo and poof, my hair is a lot better. If you want his number, ask me. You kind of have to be open to that kind of work. It is a little unusual.

It sucks, but is normal. I thought I would be bald before returning to work when my son was 4 months... it starts around 3 months post-partum but I think it stopped by the time my son was 6 months old and before I was completely bald. By the time he was a year old the hairs had returned and were a couple inches long at least... now he is almost 17-months and you would never know!

I just figured that when my hormones got back to normal so would everything else. My hair did grow back... and a little thicker the 2nd time.

Hi F F-
The only way to deal with hair loss after childbirth is to cut it off, and perhaps color it if you find yourself feeling 'blah'. Get something cute, that will make you feel better! This, too, shall pass:-) S.

I don't know if you can stop hair loss...but I had a friend who used K-Y jelly to stick cute little bows on her bald little girl's head!

Hi! This happened to me too, and completely freaked me out. I was on the verge of going to the doctor thinking that there was definitely something wrong with me, when it finally stopped.

I can't say that I have any advice on how to minimize the damage, but just know that mind DID stop after about a month, and now the hair that I lost is coming back in.

Hope that helps!

It's awful, isn't it?? I don't think a hair came out of my head for the duration of either of my pregnancies, but afterward.... oh, boy.
Every time I shampooed, it came out in handfuls. I don't think there is anything you can do apart from maybe babying the rest of the hair to minimize breakage. From what I understand it's hormonal, it's normal, and you just have to get through it. My hair grew back in exactly as it had been before.
Hang in there!

I don't remember this happening to me with my first born, but it definitely did with my second son. My hair was thin to begin with and got thinner and especially in one spot. It lasted for maybe 6 months and then grew back to my normal hair. In the meantime, I used Nioxin. You spray it on your hair like a root lifter. My mom used it when she had cancer. I think it helped.

I know it is hormonal, but it sure is alarming when you see all that hair on the shower floor. Personally I didn't do very much of anything. I did think I was going to lose most of my hair. Now I wish I had a little less, so just keep in there. If you would like, try massaging the scalp. Also a mayo hair pack every other week or so will feel good.

Try the Nioxxin (sp?) line of products. I've had the same issues, and Nioxxin does help. Many salons sell it, and you may also be able to find it at Ulta.
