Hair Loss After Baby - Albertville,MN

Okay I have 3 wonderful children, but with each one my hair seems to shed more and more with each child. My son I hardly noticed it, with my daughter I noticed it and it was a problem where I googled it to make sure I wasn't sick or something, now I had my son in October 2009, I didn't start shedding until mid February, and now it seems to come out in chunks and it is embarrassing. I know hormones and all that create huge problems for us gals, but seriously how long does it usually last. I forgot how long it lasted with my daughter and I just want to be done shedding worse than our dogs! LOL

Any thoughts or advise is greatly appreciated.

Currently I will use a wide tooth comb in the shower (I always have used one thanks to my super thick hair) when I put my conditioner in and work out the loose hair. Even after I am done towel drying it or blow drying and flat ironing it, I am still loosing tons of hair! Gross.

What can I do next?

Have you tried progesterone cream? It made a HUGE difference in my "recovery" this last time. I had finally found a pattern in that I experience symptoms of a hormone change about 3 months after the baby is born (hair loss, moodiness, insomnia,...). For the first time, I started using a progesterone cream. It made all the difference.

Hi,
I had the same problem, still do somewhat, but it eventually just stops. I would say mine started at around 4 months (post-delivery) and now, at a year, is much better. Sorry to tell you, but I've tried so many things to stop it, but have given in to wiping hairballs out of the tub after each shower. It did decrease a lot when my son was about 8 months, so good luck!

maybe you should have your thyroid checked. Losing hair is one of the signs of a thyroid issue.

What a GREAT question!! I was wondering this too. I had the little guy in August of '09 and probably started losing around 3 months later or so. I was still taking prenatals, too. At first, it was TONS. I wasn't too concerned, because I lost almost none while pregnant for 9 months. Then it just started to get annoying. I have really long hair and it's EVERYWHERE!!! I'm so sick of finding hair all over my baby - wrapped around his arms, fingers, etc. I'm so scared it's going to get wrapped around something else and cut off circulation! ;) But I will tell you, it has gotten so much better. I still get a lot coming out during showers and brushing, but not nearly as much. So, I guess the good news is, we won't lose it all!!

Hi E.
Yes you do lose that hair up to a year later.
If it doesn't level off by then you might want to look at nutrition. I use some- can tell you about it if you email me-- and my hair at nearly 50 is thicker than when I was pregnant with twins. Nails are healthy too.
I also added in something my hair gal told me about- you can get it at Ulta. Think it's called nioxin-- I'm not home-- use the conditioner you leave in-- has to do with oils that plug hair follicles after you have kids as you age type thing. I had 100's on new hairs come back after that too-- so really thick and now sometimes my childhood wavy hair.

Great that you comb through in the shower! My hair gal sent me that tip too.

I definitely RETAIN hair during pregnancy, so I expect that "extra" hair to fall out after the hormones die down. I also credit my prenatal vitamins for the extra volume.

However, if you are concerned that it's getting thinner and thinner, talk to your doctor. There may be something missing nutritionally.. my MIL takes an OTC thyroid supplement, and she's noticed that her arm hair has finally returned, and the hair on her head is noticeably thicker.

Other ideas:
- keep taking prenatal vitamins
- use anti-hair loss shampoo/conditioner (my SIL used it when she was going through hair loss, likely from emotional stress)
- use a fine-toothed comb. get more of the shedding hair out all at once in the shower.

I had the same problem and I gave it 6 months to correct itself, which it did not do. My way of stopping it was to chop off my hair. My hair was down to my butt after I gave birth and I cut it up to my ears and it has almost completely stopped shedding. I hate my hair short but it is easier to take care of and I don't lose chunks of hair.

I think it started at about 3 months after she was born, and I swear I lost my hair for up to a year after. I would clog the shower everytime I took one!!! You could try Nioxen Hair Products, that may help.. also try taking extra an extra Vitamin E suppliement. Also if you could try to washing your hair at night instead, so you don't have to blow dry it in the morning. Also maybe try dry shampoo so you don't have to wash it as often...

Good Luck, I know it isn't a fun situation :)
