My hair falls after each pregnancy. It usually happens when the baby turns three months. What can I use to make it stop?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your responses. I just freaked out since my husband and everybody at work is noticing that I am getting bald. I'll embrace it. Anyway, it feels good when people ask what happened to my hair and I can answer:"It's something that happens to moms when they give birth".
Thanks!

The same thing happens to me. I've had three children and around 3 months all the hair in the front of my hair falls complety out or gets really thin. I need help as well. Thanks!

I had the same problem after my births. My hair dresser recommended Hair Care vitamins. I bought them at a Vitamin Store like GNC. The hair loss is due to a hormonal change in our bodies and we really just have to wait it out, but the vitamins did help. Good luck!

There's nothing you can do! When you're pregnant, your body doesn't shed as much (my hair looks great when I'm pregnant!) and then when the pregnancy is over and you don't need the extra warmth, sheds.

J.,

The condition you are suffering from is called "postpartum alopecia". It is a temporary hair loss at the conclusion of pregnancy. Let me explain. During pregnancy, hair stays longer in the anagen cycle (active growing stage). Then after childbirth, these hairs enter the telogen phase (resting stage, when each of these hairs has no attached root sheath) and the hair then falls out. Remember it seems as if you are losing great amounts of hair, but really you are only losing the "extra" hairs that developed and hung on during your pregnancy. There is no need for concern as this is just the result of your body's hormonal balance returning to it's previous state. I am currently going through the same thing, as i stopped breastfeeding a few weeks ago. There really isn't anything you can do to prevent it or control it. You just have to wait it out, and remember that your body went through some pretty amazing hormonal changes during your pregnancy and it takes time to return to your non-pregnant self! It is a process that occurs over time.

Good luck....hope this was helpful to you! I learned all of this information in cosmetology school, in case you were wondering.

Hormones are responsible for the lush, beautiful growth that takes place during pregnancy...and those same hormones are responsible for it all falling out. That is what my doctor told me. My hair grew like wild weeds when I was pregnant with my 3 children and with each birth came the hair loss. Talk to your doctor to verify this.

It was very scary to see bunches of my hair found at every corner of my house when I was sweeping. I researched a little bit about it, but I found nothing that could help as it caused by hormonal changes. This is natural after giving birth. It will not be forever, just be patient.

Hi! That's quite normal, because your hormones are going back to normal. If it doesn't stop in a month check with your doctor.

According to my dr - nothing you can do! Mine does the same thing after I have had each of my kids - thank goodness my hair is really thick - just don't try to color or perm/straighten it because that makes it all the worse! Once your hormones are regulated it stops falling out!

I have the same problem. My second son is 3 1/2 months and I started losing my hair right around my hair line. It is not terribly noticable b/c of how my part is, but I notice it. It also happened with my first son, who is 5 years old. You just have to ride it out and it eventually starts to grow back. I cried the first time it happened with my 5 year old, but when it happened again I realize it will grow back. It is just our crazy hormones. Good luck

I don't think there is anything you can do. When pregnant, hair often grows thicker and faster. After giving birth, it's normal for hair to fall out.

Hi J.,

My hair did the same exact thing I don't think there is much we can do. The Drs pretty much just said that's part of it. Let me know if you get any good info, so I can prepare for the next one. I am Mom of a beautiful 19 month old boy. www.DiscoveryToysLink.com/LisaRyan

It happens to me too. This time it happened the whole first trimester and then again after the birth. It went on forever. I thought I was going bald. People say to keep taking your prenatals. My suggestion is do as little with your hair as possible. Let it air dry if you can. The good thing is it does stop and does grow back - even though you think there is no way you are going to have any hair left. My baby is 16 months now and my hair is still growing out. The pieces in the front are a little past my nose now...

mine fell out after 6 months, when I stopped breastfeeding. If you BF, it won't fall out as much. Try Nioxin shampoo & conditioner. It is fairly expensive, but worth it. You can buy it at ULTA.
Good luck

J.--
I have a terrible problem with this as well, but I do want to be clear that my hair loss is pretty extreme. I lost probably 2/3 after my 2nd baby, but the issue for me was chronic both before and after both kids. That said, if you also feel the need to be aggressive about the ordeal, my dermatologist recommended using Rogaine (very important--for MEN!!!). She had the same problem, and she used it. Now I use it and the shedding has stopped and the hair is growing back. It can make your head itch terribly, and if it does, pick up a bottle of Scalpicin (sold right next to the Rogaine at Walgreens). If you think the shedding is going to stop soon enough, you may not want to fool with this. But as far as I know, this is the only thing that really works.
Good luck!
p.s. She also recommended a vitamin called Biotin, so I take that too.
