it's not the breastfeeding, it's the having a baby. I didnt breastfeed and my hair fell out like crazy for months.
Hello Ladies! My problem is I am losing my hair in handfulls, I am currently nursing my son and he is 4 months old. It is very noticeable around my temples, although I have long hair and it somewhat covers it up. I don't like it though at all, and seriously when I take a shower it is scary the amount that I gather up. I have been looking around on the internet, and they say that post partum hair loss is pretty normal but I was just wondering if this has happened to any of ya'll and if it has how long did it last?
Thanks Guys...

Biotin really helped me. I lost hair and my nails started to break really easily, I think all this is a normal part of the postpartum stuff, but my doctor recommended biotin which is an over the counter vitamin and it works wonders, I still take it
Normally we lose about 100 hairs a day. When you are pregnant, you lose almost no hair at all. Once you give birth, all the hair you normally would have shed starts catching up in a massive shed fest, and it's scary how much hair that seems like, but it all evens out in the end. After a few months resting stage, the hair follicle produces a new hair. Give it a few more months and your hair will feel a bit fuller than it is right now.
Welcome to the wonderful world of postpartum. Usually 3-4 months after giving birth your hair will start to fall out. This is hair that should have fallen out while you were pregnant, but we hang on to our hair during this time due to all those fantastic hormones. It may seem a lot and you will see some "bald spots", but in a few months you will see much new growth and it will all come back. It happened with both my kiddos and now 11 months after giving birth to my second, I have more hair than I've had since I was 18! It doesn't have anything to do with breastfeeding.
Keep taking those prenatal vitamins as long as you are nursing!!! It has the folic acid that is so important for your little one and also tons of vitamins that you need for yourself and to pass along to your baby!!!
Hey A.,
It happened to me too. And to many moms. It's almost as if there should be a Public Service Announcement that we will lose a shocking amount of hair sometime soon after we have our babies. I understand that it's due to a hormonal fluctuation--that we lose less hair when preggo and then start to balance that out postpartum. So don't worry about the hair in the drain...it won't continue forever. Three years later and my hair is the thickest it's ever been --just don't ask me about the gray strands!:) (those come later!)
Yep, it's completely normal! I had two major bald spots that showed up right around four months postpartum. I think it only lasted for a couple of weeks, but unfortunately it was enough time to lose a ton of hair.
Be sure to get your thyroid levels checked. They can go crazy post partum.
It's totally normal! All women lose hair after their babies are born because we lose so little while we're pregnant. It has nothing to do with breastfeeding and is nothing to worry about. It usually lasts a couple of months, I think.

It's not just because you're breastfeeding:) Every woman stops losing hair when she's pregnant. She grows more hair all over her body. Then after the baby is born, at 3-4 months postpartum, she loses all the extra hair she grew, and sometimes a little more.
Just keep taking your prenatal vitamins and taking care of your hair, you'll be fine!
Hi A.,
This happened to me with my babies! Just like clockwork--4 months came along, and I felt like I was going bald, and with my last one, I nearly did! Just kidding, but I can say that is was the most hair I've lost yet, and I just gave birth about 2 weeks ago, and I'm really nervous for the 4 month mark to come. I don't recall how long it lasted, but it wasn't too long, and it does grow back.
Perfectly normal. It has nothing to do with breastfeeding. Everything to do with your body getting back into balance.
Totally normal, it's disgusting I know, and one of those little wonders they don't emphasize post-partum. Mine usually started around 3 months and it lasted a good 3 or 4 months. It's because you don't shed your hair while pregnant so it's nine months of build up you're making up for. Nice huh?
Hi, this happened to me. I was blessed with super thick hair all my life and then right after I gave birth, my hair thinned out. My hair got thick again although not like before, but most of it came back after I breastfed. Hang in there, it will come back before you know it.
I lost my hair when I was pregnant and breastfeeding. Check to make sure you're not pregnant. You're probably not if your kid is only 4m old but it's possible!
I was told (by a friend) to keep taking my prenatal vitamins the whole time I nursed. She said it would delay my hair falling out (but not stop it) and while I followed the advice, and my hair didn't begin to fall out until I began to wean my son and switched to a womens multi-vitamin...I have no idea if this was why. I nursed until he was eighteen months old. And then I got pregnant...so back on the prenatals!
This happened with both my kids, starting about 3 months after giving birth, and it lasted until about 6 months after, and I was (am) still breastfeeding, so I don't think the two go hand in hand. What's even worse is once my hair started growing back, I got all the baby hairs around my face that stick straight out. I guess it's a price we pay for having kids. :) At least it's totally worth it, and will eventually look normal again.
No worries, it's just a hormonal shift from the pregnancy... I lost my hair in handfuls up until about 4 or 5 months with both of mine. Your not really losing anything that you wouldn't have normally, though. When you are pregnant, your hair doesn't fall out, which is why it looks fuller! But those old hormones shift back afterwards, and out comes all of the old hair that should have fallen out months ago!
