Hair Washing and Dry Shampoo

So I've been reading a lot lately that it's best not to wash your hair every day, better every 2-3 days. Something about leaving the natural oils, helps the hair stay healthier, etc etc - so I'm intrigued. My biggest stumbling block is showers. When I get in the shower my hair gets wet. If I don't wash it/condition it it's a tangled greasy mess when I try to dry it. I suppose I could use a shower cap, but that just seems so 50's to me.

So - if you don't wash your hair daily - what do you do on the non-shampoo days? Do you wear a shower cap? Do you just not take a shower (I live in TX, not possible in the summer, lol)? When do you use dry shampoo? How long do you go between shampoos? How long did it take for your hair to get used to not being washed daily?

Ok, think that's it, Thank You!

What can I do next?

I wash my whole head every other day (unless sweaty at the gym, outside etc) and on off-days, twist it back in a clip sudsing up just the 2 in or so around my front hairline since that's what gets oily from my face. sometimes just wetting it down and reblow drying also does the trick for me.

My husband said that he didn't wash his hair for months on end when he was in Australia. It took about a week to 10 days for it to look good without washing. One week back in London, and it looked gross and grimy very quickly. He is convinced that the no wash thing can only work well if you are in a "clean" rural setting as the natural oils, etc can only overcome regular "dirt" and not the soot and grime that you have in a city.

My hair is long, thick and wavy. I wet it every time I shower, which is often as 2 or 3 times a day. I only towel dry, don't blow dry, and don't use any styling products. I wash it about once or twice a week, or if it warrants it, i.e. been sat round a bonfire, at a curry restaurant, baby upended spaghetti sauce into it.

I don't use a shower cap, I don't use dry shampoos. People compliment my hair all the time and say that it is lovely and enviable. I think I'm just lucky.

Good luck to you and yours,

You CAN shower, wet your hair and condition it DAILY. You can also shower cap it (I do sometimes), but I have a hand held sower head that is easier to direct the water and keep my hair dry.

Okay - DRY SHAMPOO ... it's mostly a second day hair kinda thing. This video is a VERY comprehensive video regarding pretty much all the decent brands out there on the market. I use Battisse Personally.

I've never washed daily, usually two times a week and my hair is super healthy! I use dry shampoo on day three. I use a beach spray usually on day two and sometimes on day three for texture, and blow it straight on day one (my hair is kinda wavy naturally). I put it up in a topknot/bun when I shower daily and don't wash my hair.

I shower/wash hair every other day, unless I do something that calls for another shower! (like yard work!)

I also do not use shampoo or conditioner. I actually wash my hair with baking soda, and use apple cider vinegar as a "conditioner." It's kinda weird to get used to, but it works! And it does not add extra "stuff" to your hair. I have really oily hair, and I have tried different shampoos before. Even some a little more expensive than I really wanted. Tried dry shampoo too. None of it worked for very long :( Now I have something that works & is extremely less expensive!

For "shampoo", mix 1 tbsp baking soda & 8 oz water. I keep mine in a sports water bottle haha Easy to squirt into my hair.

For "conditioner", mix 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar & 8 oz water. I put mine in one of my daughter's empty detangler spray bottles.

I was my roots every day. If I skip a day, my roots are just too oily. I don't wash the ends every day though. Just the roots.

I have curly hair which is naturally dry. On non-wash days i wet my hair & condition only. I only actually use shampoo about 1 time a week. It takes a while to get used to but really helps the condition of your hair. Good luck:)

I only wash it a couple of times a week -- I put it on top of my head in a pony tail or put on a cap (who cares if it's 50s? do you have an audience?) My hair gets much too dry and brittle, even with conditioning, if I wash it more often than that. I once had a woman compliment my hair and ask what I use to treat it because it was so shiny and healthy. Washing it less is my only trick. Plus, with kids and the potential for lice (who prefer clean hair), I like to have a little of the natural oils left in my hair as a lice deterrent, should they ever bring them home!

I either wear a cap, or put my hair in a bun on the top of my head...then be VERY careful not to get it wet. Seriously, a cap is fine. I only wash my hair twice a week. (Unless I swim, I wash after that) No need to use a dry shampoo, as my hair is used to it. I'd say it took a few months to get my hair used to it. I used translucent powder during those months. (I didn't know dry shampoo was a thing then. That would have been easier :) I just used it whenever my hair looked oily.

My hair is SO healthy. It was never this healthy before I washed it less. I have really lovely hair, and it wasn't like that before with all the washing.
