My 20 month old broke out yesterday after picking him up from mothers day out with small blisters all over his body except for the trunk of his body, I have read that it is virial and that it will have to run its course, but just wanted to get any advice on the situation. We are going to the Dr this afternoon, but I am also wondering if I should contact the mothers day out so they know cause at this age they are putting everything in their mouths and makes me concerned they are cleaning the toys etc well enough, plus a kid scratched him yesterday and drew blood and I wonder if he couldve gotten it from that, cause he was fine yesterday morning when I dropped him off, It just hit all the sudden!!!

What can I do next?

Get him to the doc and then notify the program.

It's miserable and he will be in some pain.
He may get blisters in his mouth which will make eating (and even drinking) painful.

You absolutely need to contact the Mother's Day Out and let them know once you know what you are dealing with. Even if it's plain ol' chicken pox. Anyone who comes into contact with an illness needs to know so they can limit their contacts. We had a run in with Fifth's Disease a few years ago and had 2 pregnant women in the family. They each had to be contacted and then tested to make sure they hadn't contracted it at the birthday party (damn you Chuck E. Cheese) because the effects to the baby in utero can be devastating.

I agree with everyone else - take him to the Dr, and then let the Program Director know the diagnosis. HFM went thru my son's preschool when he was about 18 mo; but, thankfully we were out of town when it was spreading. If I remember correctly, the minimum incubation period, before the blisters appear, is about 3 days.

This is a SUPER contagious virus so he could have gotten it from any number of things. Also, he probably had the virus before he even got to daycare. You should definitely let the daycare know because many of the other kids will be coming down with it too. We had it a few years ago and it was not fun.

I would not say he has anything particular until the doc has diagnosed him.

I would call and tell them why he isn't there today so they can check everyone while they are still there though. They may have noticed some rashes or even his and thought it could be heat rash or an allergy.

Thank you all for getting back to me and I never thought about shopping carts!! I always try and wipe them down but I sometimes forget as we all can understand, so I will wait until after the Drs appt to then call the MDO and inform them of what his actual diagnosis is cause with lilttle ones you never know!! So I will keep you all posted!!

Your kiddo would have contracted it before mothers day out. But you should contact them because he could now be the infector instead of the infectee, and they will need to thoroughly clean their toys.

HFM sucks, but it does go away.

HI N. - hand foot and mouth is so contagious I would suggest telling the leader of the mothers day out so they can give a heads up to the other families. If I remember correctly (mydaughter was about 20 months when she got it) that the most contagious is before the blisters appear - which is why it spreads like wildfire!!!! I think my daughter was uncomfortable for about 3 days and then seemed to feel better. During those three days she'd seem fine in the morning and then when she woke up from her nap she'd be hot and uncomfortable and clingy for a couple of hours - I think maybe it's because she was breathing through her mouth and it irritated the blisters in there.

Prayers of healing for your family!

My oldest got it when he was little. It's good you are taking him to the dr cause like others have said it could be that and could be something else. He may not have even gotten it from there depending on how often he goes cause I don't think he would have contracted it and showing signs in the same day. That's also why I hated grocery carts at that age. My little one was a chewer he always was trying to chew on anything he could get him mouth on including the handle and the straps of the cart. That was before they had those cool little things now that go in the carts that are cloth. If it is HFM it is very contagous and you can get it too so be careful.

Good luck and God Bless!

Definitely get him in to the doctor. Could be HFM or could be chicken pox.

Probably not from the scratch as much as from being in an area with an infected kid. He was probably exposed before the moms day out, as it can take a day or two for blisters to show.

Either way, keep him in away from other kids and try to make him comfy.

Poor little guy.
