Hand Pain

For the past two weeks I've been having problems with my left hand. It's slightly swollen, goes numb at times, freezes in certain positions at times, and is quite painful at times. My finger pads are extremely sensitive to touch, espcially to contact withh water. I experience the most amount of pain during the night and am woken up from a deep sleep with intense pain. I'm left handed and can not do a whole lot with my right hand. I do not have health insurance and spent $104 for a walk in clinic to tell me it's carpal tunnel, to use motrin and a wrist splint. I'm doing that along with trying aspercreme, sports creams, and tiger balm with no relief. I badly need sleep, but of course can't take sleep aids and still hear 9 month old Conner if he's to wake. The pain is more intense when I'm not using it which doesn't make sense to me. I'm desperate for any ideas anyone has for relief.

What can I do next?

You could always try a chiropractor or a massage. I agree that it could be something to do with what you're sleeping on or how you are sleeping too.

Good Luck! I hope you find some relief soon!

Dear J.,
It is hard to diagnose a condition with only one visit and no diagnostic testing. Did they do an xray? How thorough was your exam? Even though you don't have insurance doesn't mean you shouldn't have a primary care physician. I would try to see a regular doctor for another opinion. If you pain is worse at night, maybe your mattress or pillow is bad for you or maybe there is a position you hold your body in during the day that is straining you. Good luck!! K.

J.,

I feel for you! I went through the same thing, with both hands, when I was in dental school. You described the exact same pain that I felt, to a tee! I was sure it could not just be carpan tunnel, I was ready to diagnose myself with rheumatiod arthritis or paralysis...I thought it would never get better. But with Motrin, ice, massage and some rest I finally got better. I'll tell you it came back when I had my first daughter...watch how you are picking up your son. Try not to put your thumbs under his armpits to pick him up, this can aggravate the carpal tunnel. As for the sports creams and tiger balm, I don't believe they will help. Carpal tunnel is caused by inflammation that applies pressure to a nerve. So, the Motrin will really help with the inflammation. You can take 800mg every 8 hours three times a day. Try this for 10 days and see if you get any relief. I do not like to take lots of medicine, but know that the Motrin will help. Also, have someone massage the top of your forearm down to your wrist, this sometimes provided some relief from the tension.

Good luck to you!

It does sound alot like cps (carpal tunnell) Try to go to walmart and buy a wrist splint. They cover your hand and go over your wrist. Its gonna help. You can wear it mainly at night. If your on computers alot, its going to get worse. Use alot of ice. You most likely got it while you were pregnant, almost all pregnant women get it. Sometimes it takes a while to go away.Good luck

Believe me I feel your pain. I had this....it actually wasn't carpal tunnel. Carpal Tunnel cannot be accurately diagnosed without running xrays & more expensive tests. It was actually just wrist strain. It was actually being caused by the way I position my hands while I sleep. They recommended that I use the splint only at night when I sleep & not during the day. I tried that & the pain actually went away! Now I don't wear it on a regular basis, but when the pain starts to creep up, I put it on & it really helps.

Good Luck!

hey J., just want to put this out there because I'm just learning about it, but my friend from work had similar symptoms and after many different doctor and chiropractor visits, she was diagnosed with MS. Very scary stuff.
Best of luck to you, keep us posted on your progress.

If you have insurance, go to a doctor other than a walk in. It probably is carpal tunnel, but a severe case. I know of two people who tried the same things as you are and they needed surgery. I really don't think anything you are trying is going to help with such a bad case and you should be looking into getting more of a diagnoses and surgical alternatives. So sorry, I know how much pain you must be in and I wish you luck!
