I have a special needs child with a weak immune system. I also have a healthy 7 year old daughter. She had been haveing really bad headaches. We couldnt figure out what was causeing them. Finally I gave her allergy meds and they headaches stopped. My son Started getting sinus infections and dermititus as soon as it started raining and getting warmer. As soon as the antibiotic was done he gets it again. My question is, the house we are living is rented. The roof leaks in many places. We have asked our landlord to fix it at least 5 times. He still has done nothing. It has been leaking bad for almost a year. My thinking is there HAS to be mold. Is it possible to get constant sinus infections from mold and does anyone know of what we can do to get this fixed when our landlord refuses to fix it? My husband tried to get on the roof and find the cracks to at least stop the leaks. He cant find it. I have no idea what to do..

What can I do next?

I don't know what the regulations are where you live. Here a landlord must keep the enviroment below a specific level of mold. You just have to call, well I don't know who, the department that regulates such things. They will test and if it is at high enough levels they will compel the landlord to fix the problem.

Having said that my house can have mold at fairly low levels and it still gives me headaches and sinus infections. Severe allergic reactions will cause sinus infections. I found that out when I went to NYC and found I was allergic to the whole city. :( My point is that you can have enough mold to cause your children issues but not enough to compel your landlord to do anything about it.

Here is my two cents if your husband is determined to fix the leaks. Go up in the attic, look for the water marks. Find the top of the mark and that will give you some idea where the roof is leaking. Remeber that water takes the path of least resistance. In other words there is no water with an agenda going up under the shingles. :p Look for missing or cracked shingles also check the flashings around the vents. Also on the vents check to see if they have black gaskets around the vent pipe. Those gaskets can dry and crack over time and leak. If you have to replace the flashings around the vent pipes do it on a hot day when the shingles will be softer and easier to bend without breaking them.

Worst case hire a roofer and send your landlord the bill. Just be aware he may not promptly pay it.

Mold is a MAJOR health issue. Your landlord must check it out and fix it or he/she should be reported to the Health serivices. It will only continue to get worse and make you sicker. I have been through this myself as well as seen others inflicted by it.

If nothing else, you need to move. I know that sounds extreme, but I am sure you don't want to deal with these health issues forever...

That is house is killing you and your family. Since the landlord is not doing anything, I would contact your local newstation's trouble shooter reporter. They love this kind of thing and getting that landlord on TV, well I think he'll be persuaded to do something about the house. If not, you really need to move.

I'm certain that house has black mold. Have you ever watched Extreme Makeover Home Edition? They destroy the houses with black mold for the very same health issues you are encountering.

Ideally you should get out as soon as possilbe.

Good luck and many blessings to you and your family.

Sure sounds like you need a better place to live and a better landlord who is responsible. I wouldn't fool around with leaky stuff. Yes mold and mildew is a potential cause. I personally feel it was a contributory factor, if not the main factor, in my late hubby's demise. He sat in the basement, self employed for 10 years. A workoholic. The air down there was not good, and he experienced headaches. But it also, I believe, caused his thinking to be like WAAAAAY off in another galaxy weird! And if mold and rank air can cause cancer, then bingo.
Don't take chances. Start looking for a better place where they respond to problems

Sounds like mold and i would have the landlord check it out. If he isn't willing call someone to come out and check. Mold can get out of hand and become toxic. The health problems are worse. If you have the house checked and find that there are crazy amounts of mold you might need to trash books, cause you can't wash them, and some other things because ofthe mold. If this is the case your landlord should be paying you for lost items. Mattresses are also to be trashed. If you need to stay in a hotel all that should be taken care of by the landlord. You see, it's his house and he should have the problem looked at and in some extreme cases the house has to be condemed with everything inside and burned. You need to get this checked out ASAP as your family's health depends on it.

Home Depot has a mold tester you can do yourself for about $10. It's a petry dish that you leave out for at least 24 hours, then let it sit covered for another 24-48 hours to see if anything grows in the dish. The instructions tell you where to send it if something does grow to have it analyzed. I sure hope you do not have mold! If your landlord won't fix your roof, he really won't want to tear out all the drywall either. You might want to check your lease to see who is responsible for the maintenance and repairs...an attorney might be in order. :(
