Has Anyone Ever Had a Gallstone Attack?

Or know someone who has? What are the symptoms? I tried online research but the description is so broad that I thought I would ask a person who has been through it.

EDIT: I thought I would add my symptoms. This started right after I ate McDonald's. I thought it was gas, but it wasn't going away so I came home; that's when the bottom dropped out! The pain comes in waves, and I feel like I'm going to be sick, and I have a bitter taste at the back of my throat. When the wave comes it feels like something is grabbing and twisting my insides to the point I want to cry. Then it goes away, then it comes back. This has been going on for hours. The pain is right under my rib cage. It's not all the way to the right, but more the right than the left, but the middle mostly. I'll pay attention when the next wave comes along. I feel shaky, tired, I have a headache and I have the chills, and I keep belching.

What can I do next?

The worst pain of my life.

Very intense, centered in the middle of my upper abdomen but radiating around to my back. Often triggered by eating fatty or greasy foods, kicking the gall bladder into high-gear, and moving any gall stones that happened to be present through the bile duct, which is what causes all the pain.

Typically would last around 10 minutes, then would stop on it's own, sometimes after vomiting a few times. Made me feel like I wanted to die. Not fun at all.

Got diagnosed on ultrasound, then bye-bye gall bladder. No problems ever since.

I'll start off by saying that my doctor told me that my symptoms were on the completely wrong side of my body for gallbladder issues which is why it took almost 5 years to figure out it was indeed my gallbladder. It all started in 2006 with pains throughout my rib cage and back all along the left hand side. I would feel as though I either needed to vomit or have a bm and I could not do either. I would actually make myself vomit and I would feel better.

However, upon becoming pregnant I of course stopped doing so. It kept up randomly occurring so much so that everyone thought I had a dairy allergy. This did not prove to be factual but upon changing my diet I noticed changes within my body however last year things had become so horrible that I finally demanded answers. I went in for an ultrasound and found out that I had horrible gallstones. I had my gallbladder removed June of last year and a follow up ERCP to remove the extra gallstones still stuck in the bile duct. Since then I have still had occasional issues in spite of no longer having a gallbladder or gallstones of course.

Definitely go to your doc and have an ultrasound done to make certain that you do not need to have your gallbladder removed. As silly as it sounds often doctors assume things one way or another without thinking that perhaps you may not be a textbook case. I was not, and was told that I most likely brought my gallstones upon myself. Whoops?

Worst pain EVER!

WAY worse than child birth, for me anyway!

I had intense pain, the kind where you just know that something isn't right, in my chest kind of under my right breast. Oh my goodness, it was AWFUL! I had 3 attacks before I went to the ER and was told I needed immediate surgery.

The first attack was short, maybe 5 mins and it scared me but it passed so quickly I let it go.

The second attack I was out shopping and I tried walking around thinking it would make it better and it didn't...it last about 5-7 mins. I told my husband "I think there is something wrong with me'.

The third attack lasted like 20 mins and I was basically rolling around on the bathroom floor and my sister walked in and said 'lets go'! and we were off to the ER!

I never had back pain. My pain was very isolated to my front chest under my breast. It is the kind of pain that stops you in your tracks and you are unable to do anything else while having it but try to focus on not dying.

My poor mom just had to have her gall bladder removed recently.

She suffered with pain for quite a while that would come and go. Eventually, she was down to barely eating anything because basically anything she ate made her very sick. They did an ultrasound and she was loaded with gall stones.

She sailed through her surgery and feels so much better now.

Get checked out as soon as you can.

Best wishes.

Sounds about like what I went through when I had them. Getting my gall bladder removed was such a relief.
They told me that I would not be able to eat spicy or greasy foods anymore. Three days after my surgery, I was at Popeye's. I eat anything I want and have no issues with not having a gall bladder.

I have. I had emergency Gallbladder surgery in February due to gallstones. The symptoms are different for everyone. It started out as just back pain. I had back pain for months. Then it kicked into high gear (by this point my gallbladder was horribly enflamed from months of not knowing what it was). Then the abdominal pain started. It was intense pain in the right side under my ribcage. I also had horrible chest pain with every breath I took. I thought I was having a heart attack. I still did not know what was wrong with me. Finally my dr did an MRI and discovered the gallstones. But like I said, by this point it was in really bad shape. I ended up needing emergency surgery. The surgery is usually an easy recovery but I had complications from the surgery that almost cost me my life. If you suspect gallstones, tell your doctor and ask for an abdominal ultrasound, that is the best way to detect gallstones. Don't let it go or you may end up in bad shape. Good luck and if you want more info or advice, send me a private message.

My mother-in-law went through it and it was AWFUL. She probably had symptoms for about one year or more. At first, it was just a burpy, full feeling. She had some bloating, some indigestion. Then came the attacks. Right before the attacks she had some yellowing of the skin, which turned out to be a blocked bile duct. With the attack she had severe pain under the rib cage with radiating pain between her shoulder blades. She had diarrhea, vomiting, and significant bloating.

Getting her gallbladder was the best thing she ever did, she says.

Hope you are getting your situation checked out.

That sounds like it could be it. I had mine removed last year. I didn't realize that my gallbladded had it out for me since I was a little girl. In recent years, I seriously thought I was going to die. The pain was excruciating, and there was no end in sight.

I had chest pains, almost a pulled muscle across the heart. I also had lower back pains. One checked me for a heart attack. Finally, when the duct was blocked, my lower right abdomen hurt so badly I thought it was my appendix bursting.

I had gallbladder attacks for 15 years and had no idea thats what they were.
After I had it removed, the surgeon said I have an extremely high pain tolerance.

Mine would only happen every once in while. Thought they were endometriosis pains, since they started after a surgery to laser the endo.

Looking back it was greasy food that caused the most problems. The only food I cannot tolerate now is Kentucky Fried Chicken. Makes me nauseous thinking about it.

ouch! yes shortly after my son was born. you can get gallstones from pregnancy with all the hormonal changes. Get checked for them. PAIN PAIN... it sounds like you for sure need checked asap.. you dont want to keep getting them if that is what is is ... get gallbladder out asap if it is.. to avoid keep getting them. such a relief~~i do have to do a drastic diet change with my gallbladder out because i cannot digest certain foods or tolerate too much sweets which is a positive thing because you need to eat healthier once its out because your body needs to tolerate and learn to live without a gallbladder. the surgery is very simple laproscopy!

Sounds like gallbladder to me. That sounds similar to mine. The only thing you can do is go have an ultra sound to see if you have sludge or stones. My stones were 22mm and would float around then go plug the drain and cause me a lot of pain.

When mine first started I was pregnant with my 3rd & first boy. I didn't know I was pregnant to begin with so I just chaulked it up as issues with the pregnancy once we found out.

After I had him I had issues with spices at first... I would double over with pain - mainly right in the center right below the ribs. Where the two curves come together. So, I cut out anything with spices (mainly cinnamon). Then it was when I would eat beef, so I cut down on beef - then chicken... and finally I went to the doctor when I couldn't drink water without being in pain. Then sent me to the ER & I was hospitalized due to dehydration and the ultrasound of my galbladder was really bad.

If you think it is your galbladder & stones - go see the doctor sooner then later. If won't heal it's self & if that is what it is it will only get wrost... get it looked at - worse they can say is well its not the that. Good luck - hope you feel better soon!
