Hey Girls,
I Recently took the baby for a check up and I asked the Doctor what sunblock she recommended (Going to florida friday)She said not to use it, it isn't approved for babies under 6 months(she is 4 months now) and to use baby oil. The item of putting baby oil on my child for sun protection sounds insane, won't she fry?My son was already 6 months during summer so we never had this problem. As always your sugguestions are appreicated.Look forward to hearing from you guys

So What Happened?

Thankfully it wasn't really that warm in florida, so I just kept her covered up and out of the sun. Thanks so much for the advice

Hi A.,

My dermatologist says not to use sunscreen on babies under 6 months. As for the baby oil...I think that's crazy talk. In my opinion oil would draw the sun in. I would get a little beach umbrella and a sun hat.

Hello... I've heard that Dr's recommend this because sunscreen isn't tested on kids younger then 6 months so there is no data. My kids were all born in Texas, so we used sunscreen everyday. I would suggest putting a small ammount on her leg or arm just to see if she has any sensitivity before you go to Florida.

Good Luck

Correct..no sunscreen for babies under 6 months old. Regarding the baby oil...I used to use it on my skin to get a nice "sun burn". I definately wouldn't put that on your baby while exposing her/him to the sunlight. Make sure to dress you baby in light airy clothing. An umbrella is not enough protection. UV rays can bounce off the water and the sand.
Try to have a good time!

My understanding is that it used to be a no-no, but now some doctors are starting to say that it's better to use sunscreen than to get a burn. Definitely wear a hat and stay out of the sun as much as possible, but if you feel comfortable put some sunscreen on your kiddo. Remember that the higher the spf the more chemicals. You might just want to use a 15 and reapply more often or something.

Hi A.,

OMG - baby oil??? I used Coppertone Waterbabies 30 or 50 and it worked perfectly - my son never burned and he was able to go in the water. I used it when he was 3 months. Test a small area to be sure. A hat and eye protection is also a good idea for babies. As for baby oil, that is a horrible product for babies' skin. Yes, back in the sun worshipping days I, too, used that to get the fastest tan possible. I have no idea why a doctor would suggest such a thing. Try a second opinion...

Have a wonderful trip!

I'm sorry I have not advice for you because I've also heard that you cannot put sunscreen on a baby less than 6 months old. I would get a little umbrella for the beach, a nice little sunhat and keep the baby in the shade as much as possible. As for the baby oil, that seems insane! I would think the baby would turn into a lobster!!!
