Has Anyone Experienced Results with Allergy Shots and Reducing Ear Infections?

My son, who is almost 7, had his tonsils out one month ago in order to reduce the amt of ear infections he was getting. Well, guess what? He already has an ear infection #@#(@&)!! The pediatrician now wants to send him back for allergy testing and possible allergy shots. He was tested around 4 yo and it didn't really show anything significant. She is thinking this may have changed since dad has bad allergies and asthma. Has anyone had a child go thru the shots and have any success in reducing ear infections? I'm at my wits end. He has had 5 infections since Christmas. He is always sick. I feel even worse making him go thru getting his tonsils and adenoids removed and it didn't make one bit of difference. I just want my kid healthy!! Any advice?? I also forgot to mention he is on Singulair and has had tubes put in but they fell out after 3 yrs.. He is being followed by a very good ENT too...

L.,

I would definitely get a second opinion at least. See an ENT doctor and maybe make an appointment for a consult at an allergy doctor.

My children never had ear infections, but my youngest had very very bad asthma. I had asked her pediatrician when she was young about allergy shots. He told me no that it wouldnt help, wasnt necc, yadda yadda. Years later I decided to take things into my own hands. Although we did not continue with the entire regimen (because i Hated the office staff and finally left that allergist) the series of shots she received over the months we went greatly reduced her asthma. To the point where she carries an inhaler but doesnt use it often, except seasonally.

I know I didnt help regarding the ear infections, but when you mentioned his fathers asthma, I thought I'd share my experience, just in case.

Good luck. I know its frustrating, exhausting and worrisome. He'll be ok and you'll find the solution.

L.

Hi L.,
Just the words "ear infections" make me want to cry, as my son had them often, every year at least one major one. Was your child premature? My son was 8 wks premature & the ear canal hadn't formed itself all the way causing instant ear infections often. At age 3, his tonsils & adenoids were taken out as they were badly infected often as well. Taking them out did not stop the ear infections. ENT stated that once the ear canal was completely formed properly, the infections would stop. Not so in our case. Last year (now he's 13), he had one so bad that I had to take him to the hospital. He's simply weak in the ears. I bought the rice packs to keep his ears & throat warm through the nights & that really seems to help along with ear meds that basically numb the canal. Antibiotics are issued with each infection. He swims a lot & now they want him to wear plugs, but he hates them. If you find a good solution, please share it with me too.

My oldest son had chronic ear infections when he was young, and at 15 months got tubes in his ears, and this seemed to correct the problem. Even now, his tubes have been out for around a year (they fall out on their own), and he is still ear infection free. For some kids they work and sometimes they don't, and I'm not sure if they perform this procedure on kids who've had their tonsils removed...but its worth a try. If this is not an option I would request an allergy medication such as zyrtec before I would start the whole mess of having to go through allergy shots.

Have you taken your child to an ear, nose, throat doctor? His ear infections may be a result of build of of fluid because his ear canals may be letting the fluid down. Both of my kids (ages 5 and 2) both had tubes put in last year. They both had 7 ear infections in three months. So before you start shots I would find an ENT doctor. If you live in Macomb county there is a great place on Hall Rd. His name is doctor Russell Craig and he is across from the Nino's store. Good Luck!

Hi L.,

Do you give your kids vitamins? If not than I would start and include a chewable vitamin C on top of that. Sounds like maybe he needs a boost to his immune system. It couldn't hurt to give it a try. Ear infections usually stem from infection from a cold or virus. Good Luck!

Have you seen an ear, nose and throat doctor? They might be able to tell you more then just your own doctor. I would start there before going through with the shots, that just seems so much for a young child. Or even seeing a second doctor to see what they think. It wouldn't hurt.

I'm a little surprised that they went to the tonsils first. Usually they go for tubes before anything else. I'd get a second opinion if I were you. I would have gone for getting tubes put in before anything else. The other question is, when your son's nose runs, is it clear? If it is, I'd go with allergy testing. If not, you need to look into something else - it would seem that there's another issue there.

Hi L., I have a 4 year old who had several ear infections also. We were always at the Dr during his first 15 months of life. My pedatrician stated he needed to see an ENT and they decided to remove his adenoids and put tubes in his ears. Thank goodness one tube lasted for 2 years and the other one for almost 21/2 years. My ENT had told me that if the tubes fell out to early and he continued to get ear infections that they possibly would have to put them back in. Maybe your child needs tubes again. I forgot to mention that my 4 year old also has allergys and is currently taking Zyrtec and we haven't experenced anymore infections. Best of luck to you and your son.

Tell your pediatrian you want to take him to an ENT (Ears,Nose,Throat Specialist) That way you can have someone who specializes in allergies as well as ears take a look at him. He may need tubes in his ears. Tubes can be repetative but they do help my sister had them 5 times and each time it got better and better. But either way if its allergies or tubes an ENT can deal with the issue. Good luck let me know the outcome.

my freinds son had chronic ear infections and tubes...

the last time he was at the ENT-- they gave him a steroid nasal spray..(nasonex, flonase.. there are about 4 brands) it has reallyhelped him- the fluid is draining better and he has been infection free.

it might be worth a try- I use the steroid nasal sprays and they help my sinues a lot.
