My husband and I are considering buying a house by a national builder, D. R. Horton. Does anyone have any experience with this builder? I did some google-ing, and there are some bad and some good reviews, but it seems like every builder I look up has at least some bad reviews. Plus, I try to keep in mind that people are more likely to take to the internet to write unsolicited reviews when they are upset than when they are happy. So…. just hoping some of you mamas have had experience with a D.R. Horton house.

We own a D.R. Horton home in Florida that was built in 2005. It is our vacation home and we are the second owners. There haven't been any major problems, just your basic up keep.
We had a D.R. Horton home when we lived in Dallas, TX. We were very pleased with everything and loved our home. We hated to sell it when we moved back to Ilinois. We never encountered any problems with them. They build great homes! Good luck!
I live in a DR Horton home right now, and I love it! We have no problems with the house. As a matter of fact, my husband and I both pinch ourselves that we live in such a great place!
We have an 11-year old DR Horton home here in California. We've had to invest quite a bit fixing problems they caused. We bought the house after it was a year old (second owners). We always thought it seemed hot in our house in the summer and finally had someone out to check the AC. Turns out when they installed the big fan unit in the attic, they dinged the vent somehow so it was severely damaged. So, it could never open fully. It would freeze over the AC unit, causing it to stop. We had to pay to get that all fixed.
Not too long after that, we had a leak in our downstairs ceiling under our master bath, into our then guest room. Had a plumber come out, who discovered DR Horton put in a pipe with a 90 degree angle piece under our tub -- a huge no-no.
No clue how either of these major mistakes passed inspection by either the builder or city.
Our final issue is that there's a big place in our backyard where no grass will ever grow. We have a large corner lot and the consensus among landscapers we've had come out to look is that the builder probably used that spot as a dumping ground for cans, cinder blocks and other building supplies and just covered it up with dirt. We haven't had the money to get the equipment in to dig up the ground to confirm, however.
So, we're not huge DR Horton fans. That said, just about every builder has issues. I can't say that our problems are any worse than you'd find with other builders.
