I wanted to know if anyone has tried fastin and what were your results. I am about 40 pounds overweight and I am 40 years old and I still eat right and do the gym but the weight just does not budge from my body. Since it is so slow I have given up and need a boost of some kind. A friend tried this and did not diet or exercise and lost 17 pounds in 12 weeks. I plan to do the diet and exercise.

So What Happened?

I think quite a few moms think I was talking about fasting....I am talking about the diet pill fastin which I just went to the doctor and he will not prescribe it--I knew he wouldn't so I will be counting calories and working out. Thanks to all who responded, I will probably research some of your websites.

My mother just lost a lot of weight by eating fresh fruits & drinking lots of water. Cutting out pop completely. Eating nuts/beans for protein instead of meats or dairy products. She looks & feels great. My mom is 54. It's a great season for fruit right now. I would be really hesistent to rely on a pill to loose weight. I can't stick to the diet my mother is on, but I did cut out pop & replace desserts with fresh fruit & feel healthier. My kids love it & it teaches healthy eating habits early on. Good luck to you!

Hi L.

What really helped me was a free website called www.sparkpeople.com. They have a great support board where you can ask any questions. You can also log everything you eat. Once you start writing down everythign that goes into your mouth it makes a big difference. Just something to try but I agree with the others.........don't fast. Weight loss is not an easy thing and there are no miracle drugs. Good luck

There is no easy way to lose weight. All these diet pills, fad diets, all the schemes you hear about... they make me sick! The only true way to lose weight is simple. Step back and take a look at your diet. No more fast food, no more prepackaged meals, no more sugary snacks. Eat healthy. Prepare your own meals. Yes, it's hard when your busy working with kids, but it is possible. Also, you have to excersize. Park farther away from stores, take your kids on a daily walk (which will help them in staying fit also!), run in place, walk up and down stairs. No need for expensive excersize equiptment or joining a gym. You just have to start moving! Stay active, eat right, get the junk food out of your house. The main thing over everything else - you have to WANT to lose weight. If you don't truly want to lose it - you won't. You have to accept it and start changing your whole life. Popping a few pills a day is NOT a way to lose weight. You might lose some quick, but it'll come back. Change your life, lose weight and show your kids a good example!

Do some research on the master cleanse. Me and my husband have done it before with great results. My husband has done it more than me, and he lost 20 pounds from doing it for 14 days. It is hard the first few days, but after that it is not that bad and you start to feel good and healthier. I lost about 7 pounds, but I only did it for 7 days. I wimped out! You do have to make sure you have a good plan of eating when you are done, because if you go back to your old eating habits, you will be right back where you started. The master cleanse helps you kind of jump start your new lifestyle of eating healthy and not over eating. That's my husband's problem (and mine, for that matter) We still eat when we are full. I think he is ready to do it again. I really need to also. It is a little hard when you have to cook for your kids, and you can't eat anything. But...you can drink all the mastercleanse mixture, water and herbal tea you want. You just have to make up your mind to do it (10-14 days is not really that long when you think about it) It's all in your mind! We do truly have powerfulminds, and when we really have a desire to do something, we do it! I think I have just inspired myself to do it!! I have been wanting to, but I just haven't made the effort yet! Let me know, after you do some research, if you might be interested it doing the master cleanse. Maybe we can do it together and support each other. I have some information on it,somewhere, I will try to find it and steer you to a website that might give you some good info. Don't be fooled into buying anything off the internet. There is abundant free info on the web, at the library and at bookstores. Hope this helps you some! L.

Hi L.---I agree with the other posts that you've received. I am a wellness educator and am studying for certification from a naturopath who has a PhD in holistic nutrition. I have a passion for wellness and would be happy to share the information I am learning with you.

Both 'fasting' and Fastin, a diet pill, do not work for long-term, permanent weight loss. When you try to fool your body into getting rid of excess pounds, it gets rid of what it wants to, not the fat that it so desperately thinks it needs for a possible famine. The only way to lose fat safely, and not just water and muscle, is at a rate of 2 to 3 pounds per week. You need a combination of eating the right foods for health and exercise to accomplish this goal. Notice I didn't say calorie reduction. There is a difference.

Some habits you might want to start in order to determine why you aren't losing weight right now.
1. Keep a food journal. You will identify trends that may be working against your weight loss goals.
2. Focus on eating more dietary fiber. When your diet consists of 90% fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, you can't possibly eat too many calories and the weight will just melt off. We should be eating a minimum of 25 grams of fiber each day. More is better and easy to do if concentrating on the listed four food groups.
3. Practice the ELMO diet. Eat Less More Often. When we eat too many calories at any single meal, our body will automatically store what we don't need for our immediate needs. Our body is so efficient at storing excess fat, that scientists can look at a fat cell and tell you where it came from, whether it be from a pork chop, beef or that ice cream you had for dinner.
4. When you excercise, pick up the intensity to get the body to dip into fat stores for energy. It can take 90 minutes of exercise before we start burning fat. Increasing intensity helps to get there faster.

Please feel free to contact me for more ideas or for the science behind these recommendations. As part of my wellness business, I offer in-home presentations for you and your friends, at no charge. My passion is help people be healthier to live long and productive lives. Call me at ###-###-####. I look forward to it. In health, D.

You should still be very cautious of Fastin even if it doesn't have Ephedra and even if it's prescribed by a Doctor. In fact, that would make me more leery. The fact that you need a Rx for it means it's not considered safe to be used without the guidance of a doctor. Have you done any research to see what the side effects are? Do you know what the results of the trials/studies were? What is the active ingredient? How long has it been on the market? What happens if you stop taking it suddently or want to discontinue taking it? do you have any other health issues that would contraindicate it's use?

My suggestion: You put the weight on 'naturally' and that's how you should take it off. It may take longer, but the rsults will last and you will feel much healthier during the process. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you need to change your lifestyle permanently. Don't eat convenience foods at all. That's a good place to start. Try the Body Ecology Diet or The Maker's Diet. Both of these 'diets' will honor your body.

Fasting is not an answer to weight loss. It can be beneficial for cleansing the body of toxins and helping your colon work properly.. but if you are doing it for weight loss you will only gain the weight when you start eating again. The best way to lose weight is to cleanse your colon first to get rid of the junk in your system first.. Get a cleansing kit. I like the womans one by Yerba Prime (get at a local health food store) Do that for a month. Eat as many fruits and veggies as you can during that month. Drink at least 1/2 your weight in OZ's a day of water. Then start a diet after you are done with your cleanse. I am a firm believer of Eat Right For Your Blood Type.. I am O blood and low fat actually made me gain weight but once I did low carb I lost 50 lbs in 6 wks and kept it off!! As long as I dont eat sugary things I keep it off.. Check out the book. BTW they just proved that low carb was better and healthier then low fat too.. Check it out.. Good Luck!

I think if you are doing everything "right" it's time to go see your Doctor. You may have a thyroid disorder that is slowing your metabolism.

Fasting is the worst thing you can do, fasting throws your body into starvation mode, it starts stock piling fat and eating muscle. That's the last thing you want!

You might try eating something small every 3 hours or so, sometimes that will kick start your metabolism.

DO NOT FAST! It will throw your body into starvation mode, and then you'll be all the worse for it.

A word about me: You can probably call me a professional dieter, but I just refer to me as a recovering bulimic. I've struggled for 30 years with it. The first 10 developing it, the next quitting, and the last 10 trying to lose the weight I gained quitting without triggering the disorder. I eat whole foods, etc. but outside of not "triggering", I could not lose.

I've tried every diet there is, I can tell you for a fact, fasting is the worst. Believe me I know the desperation. I have 50 lbs to lose (and not look wafery thin either). Weight Watchers made me want to purge. NutriSystems was too expensive. Yada yada. When I visit with friends, they often comment that I don't eat that much... this is what starvation has done to me. The lowest of metabolism, and most calorie cutting isn't really cutting for me.

If I may suggest, contact Dennis Landra at ____@____.com I've started his program less than a month ago, and I've never felt so comfortable with food/cravings/self. Dennis, himself, lost around 50 lbs in less than a year and doesn't look emaciated and like he's never had a weight problem. BUT, I DON'T want this to be an advertisement, so much as just to say, you'll get better results not pushing the starvation button. Trust me, that opens a whole new can of worms that can be deadly.

Of course you can email me for additional info or just words of encouragement.

Please do not fast to try to lose weight! If anything it slows down your metabolism. A body neeeds a bare minimum of 1200 calories a day.

I have lost 60 pounds in the past 7 months by eating right and exercising. My secret...www.sparkpeople.com. It is a great FREE website where I was able to track all the food I was eating on a daily basis, and they counted the calories for me. Honestly I thought I was eating HEALTHY (becuase I was eating my fruits & veggies and using LIGHT salad dressing, that kind of thing), but when I used that food tracker to see how much I was really eating, I had a wake up call! Yes I was eating HealhiER, but I was still over-eating. I highly suggest to anyone needing to lose weight to give sparkpeople.com a try. It's free, so it doesn't hurt.

Hi L.,

I understand your situation. I am 42 with 5 kids and had a problem with 30 lbs that would not bulge. I spoke with my doctor after tryin fastin, diet pills, exercising with little or no results. He stated that it seemed that my weight was coming from stress issues. Therefore, I continued eating healthy (light breakfast & lunch then a regular dinner) and decided to try those pills called slimquick. I tried them for twice a day for 3 weeks, no exercise & lost 10 lbs. So now I'm going to start exercising & see if I can lose more quicker!. These pills are said to work on the stress hormones. Maybe it'll work for you. Good Luck!

Fasting is the worst thing you can do! Fasting throws your body into starvation mode. It starts stock piling fat and eating muscle. You want to keep your muscle and lose the fat.
Its not the scale, but the size of the clothing that matters.
Calories in vs calories out. Period.
Start a journal and see exactly how many calories you are consuming per day. WRITE IT ALL DONE, EVERYTHING.
Go to www.calorieking.com and ad up your calories.
Then, lower your intake of calories by 500 per day.
This will accumulate to 3500 per week and a loss of 1 pound.
Its slow, but it is the way to go and for permanent weight loss. Good luck. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any other questions.

All fastin will do is make your body think it is starving. You may drop a few pounds but those will be of water weight and when you eat again your body will hold on to all of that. If what you are doing with diet and exercise is no longer working, change it up a bit. If you are going to the gym 3 times a week, try going 4 times a week, if you are working out for 30 minutes, add an additional 10 minutes to each of your exercises. Or increase the intensity of your exercise routine.

I weighed 218lbs and was sick of it. I dropped all the weight down to 132lbs in about 5 months. Started with working out and eating better, but it was SLOW so then I added epheadra (sp) based pills and it melted off like butter on a hot pan. By the time I got to that 132lbs, I was only eating maybe 2 times a week and the mere sight of food turned me off. My boyfriend (now he’s my husband) found my pills while we were out one night. He tossed them in the ashtray and poured his beer over them, asking me to stop and seek help. TG I was strong enough that I was able to give up the pills and the unhealthy eating habits I had formed in my determination to lose the weight. I keep it all off for about a year till I got pregnant with my first son. I gain 80lbs of it back when I was pregnant with him. About 6 months after having him I became very sick. It was later determined by my doctors that my poor eating habits, the major drop in the weight, the pills that I was using all added up to the gull stones I had that had to be removed right then.

Sorry for the long story, my only point was that I learned if you want to drop the weight you need to follow a diet and exercises routine and when it no longer seems to be enough to get those stubborn pounds off, change it up and add a bit more or a bit harder of a routine and that works much better then the damage you can do with the other means of losing weight out there these days.

L.,
When I first wanted to lose weight, I tried fasting. It didn't work. For me Weight Watchers worked but I cannot really afford the game and money right now. I did get to Life Time but I have gained about 8-10 back and have put myself back on the structure. A few things that I learned while in the program that made sense to me were: If I don't eat right, or don't eat, my body will horde fat because it won't trust that it is going to get the nutrients it needs; eating small meals throughout the day can be more helpful; and, that I need to have someone to talk to. But as I also read what others have written, there are a lot of good ideas and websites given to help you search out your best method. And, speaking with your doctor might also help. I also learned in my work with a registered dietician that slower weight loss has a higher percentage of staying off and being maintained than "quickie" loss programs. Hang in there.

Hi L.,

Sounds like you are doing very good things for your health, but you would like to give your metabolism a boost. Working out is good as muscle mass does increase one's metabolism, naturally. So don't give up on that.

I work with people people who have tried everything and want to know what they can do to make a lifestyle change. Not only to get to their goal weight but to stay at their goal weight. If that sounds like you, I welcome you to email me.

Hello L., Please do NOT use this method. I have health issues with my digestive system and am forced to fast from time to time. This caused me to slowly put ON weight over time. The docs say that it changed my matabalizem. So after never having a weight problem, now I do, from fasting. My advice to you would be to talk to your doctor and have your thyroid levels checked. If those are off then all of your effort to lose weight will do nothing. Good luck.

I just read your update, and I think it's a good idea that your Dr. didn't prescribe. My mom used to take it and she had to go to a pretty shady Dr. in order to get it. He'd been in trouble for some of his prescribing. I don't even think it really worked anyway. I took it a couple time in jr. high to get stuff done. It gave me an extremely high level of energy but I also didn't eat anything when I took it and I was all jittery, I HAD to move and it made me talk really fast....it's like legal speed.

Fasting is not a great diet program. What it can teach you is a little self discipline in that you teach yourself to go longer periods without eating. DO NOT do it at breakfast time, tho. Have breakfast and skip lunch.

You might want to try an infrared sauna, for weight loss. Depending where you live, some health clinics (the alternative type) might have one of these saunas. They sweat out the impurities. You might be too clogged up with impurities that are sticking to your insides and not letting nutrients get to where they do good. Backup.

Have you ever heard about the fat cycle?

Have you ever heard about how much and what kind of protein your body wants during weightloss?

Would you like to talk more about turning your body's metabolism around?

Dear L. P.,

If you are not a diabetic or have any other extremely serious health problems, fasting should not harm you, but it is always a good idea to see your regular doctor and talk to him/her first.

Secondly, I have done it many times with no problems at all. Drink plenty of water and it will help flush out any impurities in your system that can come out by pooping/peeing. Only do it for a short period unless you are morbidly obese, in which case you have many meals stored up inside that can safely come out. I have fasted for as long as fifteen days when praying about something and wanted an answer from God, but food tempted me and I began to eat again before God told me to eat. When you first begin eating again after a fast of more than 3 or 5 days, eat very light at first and only things without dairy at first. Otherwise you could get stomach cramps and be on the toilet quickly.

You can also drink orange juice if only in small amounts. Some people get too much acid in their stomach while fasting and can't do it.

As I said, if you don't have serious health problems and your doctor clears you, it should be fine to fast for weight loss. I find that when I do it, it gets the greed for too much food under control and then I have to be very cautious and not over eat when I begin eating again or I get back into the same cycle of over eating again.
