Hay Fever

My 15 month old has been rubbing his eyes a lot and been having a runny nose/sneezing and dark circles around his eyes. The syptoms seem to have started when the tree pollen blew in and he has no other symptoms that would point to a cold (fever, cough etc.). He has already been diagnosed with a milk allergy and I have asthma and hay fever myself, which I know increase the chances that he could have other allergies, however, all of the reading I have done on the subject suggest that hay fever does not show up with a yound child. I know the pollen count is much higher than usual due the the warm winter, and I am thinking it may have something to do with it as well. Do you have any experience with hay fever in children (especially young children)? What are some things that we can do to make him more comfortable? We have an appiontment with the allergy specialist in May for a checkup and I will be discussing it with him at that point, but I have a while before that appointment.

What can I do next?

Yes, definetly sounds like Hay fever allergy. My son and I both have it. The dark circles, itchy eyes and runny nose are all classic symptoms. Claritin works great for kids.

Since he is 15months, I would call the pediatrician before giving them any medication though. Especially a new one.

My granddaughter was diagnosed, after testing, with environmental allergies such as pollen before she was a year old. I don't remember how old she was when she was prescribed medication but I think she was a preschooler. As I recall, there wasn't anything that could be done until she was older. I remember the sneezing and runny nose but not eye discomfort.

You can keep windows closed to help reduce the amount of pollen in the air. A humidifier in his bedroom might help.

May is awhile away. I'd call and talk with the advice nurse asking if there is anything that you can do to help relieve the symptoms.

Oh my gosh - I got on the site just a few minutes ago to look up questions on this as my 2 year old has had issues for the past year - over the fall months and now it's gotten to a point where the symptoms go straight to her chest into brochiolitis and currently pneumonia. We have to give her breathing treatments to keep it from getting so serious. I made an appointment, prior to Fridays diagnosis of pneumonia, with the pediatrician to see if he'd talk with me more now about the allergy possibility and whether we could use anything other than Hylands Allergy for kids or Kids Benadryl - both of which give little help.

Best of luck - I'm on the ride with you!

I grew up here and suffered in childhood- and when I was REALLY young as well. I had horrible allergies in spring and fall. My oldest son has allergies too, and has been taking allergy meds and using a nebulizer (now an inhaler since he's 6)- since he was 1, so yes, really young children can definitely have hay fever!
