He Won't Sleep In

My son is 25 months and I can't get him to sleep past 6:30 am. He used to sleep late (like 8:00 am) but anymore, he is up before the sun even rises. And it doesn't matter what time I put him down. He takes his nap (usually 2 hours) around 1:00 pm and then he doesn't go to bed till 9:00 pm. I just don't know how to get him to sleep later. And I am not a morning person so it is killin' me! When he wakes this early, it is still dark in his room so that's not the problem. Any help would be great!!

What can I do next?

Sorry to say, you probably will have to get used to it. My son is 26 months and does the same thing. Sometimes he'll sleep until 7, but it is usually 6:15-6:30a. No matter what time he goes down, it's the same time every day. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Maybe someone else out there knows of a miracle, if so, I want to know!!!!!!!!!

Have you considered cutting nap time in half? Plus with my son- I fed him a bowl of cereal before bed; and he slept thru the night till 8 or later. his tummy was full and they say cereal is a healthy night time snack. Good luck and I wish you and your son the best!

Hi B., my son is now 6years so what I did was allow my son to have short afternoon naps. After the afternoon nap, take him to the park or at the beach basically a day of adventure this will tire him pretty good. When almost time for bed, a nice warm bubble bath with alittle play again, dinner/burp then bed. This plan will help him sleep a bit longer. Nap time should be structured/timed so he would get use to routine.

Hello B.. Although my kids are a bit older now, I do remember having the same situation with my kids. I can certainly sympathize with you. The only thing I can remember doing is cutting down their nap time and getting my kids to bed a little earlier (say 7:30 or 8:00). Also, see if you can get him to eat something before bed(this helped me with my middle child). Also, if you have time, take him to the park and let him run around for a little while. I hope this helps. I wish you and your son luck. Keep me posted.

Hi B.!

I'm with the other moms! My 19 month old started the early rising about 3 months ago. Again, doesn't matter what time he goes to bed---he's still up w/ the chickens ;)
I also suggest putting him to bed earlier so that he gets all of the sleep he needs and you can have time to yourself!!!

Hi B. H. My son is now 8 and I had tried everything in the book when he was that age. He still to this day wakes up with the chickens. Some kids just do not sleep in. I always put him to bed around 7pm and only allowed an hour nap. Then I tried putting him to bed around 8:30-9pm and he actually was waking up earlier. He now still goes to bed at 7pm at his age only because he gets up at 5:30 for school. Not only that I am a believer of Mommy and Daddy time. Once they are in a routine usually it is hard to break them of it. I would try some of the ideas the other moms have written. This was my experience with my son. Hope it helped a little.

Hi there. Hate to be a bearer of bad news, but my son, now 3 , is the same way. I usually try to get a nap in by 1200 noon, no nap longer than 1 1/2 hours. Bed time routine starts at 7 pm, no if and s or buts, in bed by 730 745 latest. This way you can have you time also. I have tried having him stay up til 9, still gets up 6-630 am, so earlier to bed. If he does wake up to change a pee pee diaper, he may sleep a little later. I am still trying to potty train him.
So I can not tell you he will sleep later, some kids are just early birds- this will probably help when school times rolls around.

Just wanted to add- we have the same issue! I think with us the trigger was changing her over to the toddler bed because she has the freedom to get out and walk around. She used to get up around 7 or so, but I would hear her talk herself back to sleep (or just stay down and relax for at least another 1 to 2 hours). Now, 6:30, 7, if I'm lucky 7:30 rolls around and up she goes. I too tried putting her down earlier, later, less nap, more nap...nothing works! She gets up same time every day. And my fear with cutting nap time is making sure she gets enough sleep, which she really isn't anyway because she gets up so darn early and she is rubbing her eyes by 10 am! I try to get her to get into bed with me, try to get her back into her own bed, but she's wide eyed and bushy tailed. I think I will try giving her some sort of snack before bed, as suggested below. If you do find something that works, please let me know!!!
