Head Circumference

My daughter just had her 4 month checkup. The pediatrician is concerned that her head has grown too fast since the 2 month checkup, and he is sending us for an ultrasound. Has anyone been through this before or know what the cause could be? The pediatrician said it's "probably nothing," and my baby is otherwise healthy, happy and developing normally, but of course I'm worried!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The ultrasound showed that everything is normal. I am still breathing huge sighs of relief. The dr. will see my daughter again in a month just to monitor. Thanks so much to those of you who responded!

That sometimes is normal depending on the genes and growth hormones in either your family or the child's father's family...I know GOD creates children and his creation of your child is perfection! Hold true to this fact and know within yourself that "good health is the truth of your child's being"

I don't have much to offer you except I can say that my son is now 10 months old. In every doctor appointment that he has had, the person measuring him (for head circumference and also length) has done it differently and it is BY FAR not an exact science. Even the doctor has made reference to them "stretching him out this time" because the measurement jumped up from one appt to the next. Plus he is always squirmy and how they even get a tape measure still to read it is beyond me. I have also seen a nurse actually write down the wrong weight in my little book (when I saw the scale myself). It is definitely good to listen to your doc and go and have this checked, but maybe it was just their error? Try not to think about it too much before you know anything. (easy for me to say - I know).

I am sorry, I don't have any knowledge.
The only thing I was thinking is maybe calling the Dr and telling tham that you would like to know what you could look into to get some information.

I would also try researching.

But its as anything else, you could go nuts reading everything on it and it could be nothing. However, I am a type A who wants to look at all the possibilities, look at all the symptoms and assess if there's a concern....

Please keep us posted as to what happens, I will keep you and your daughter in our thoughts.

The same thing happened at my son's fourth month check up. But instead of sending him for an ultrasound right away they had me come back at 5 months to recheck it. They said usually it works itself out and the body catchs up with the head. And at 5 months it was fine. So I'm sure there's nothing wrong! Good luck!

My son who is now 2 is still off the charts including his head, he has had a big head since day 1 and nothing has been wrong with him. His dad had a big head when he was little and my brothers also did. I'm sure there is nothing to worry about, but definitely get the ultrasound to put your mind at ease. I was also a first time mom at 39 and also worried about everything and still do.

My pediatrician had us go for a CAT scan when at 9 months, my son's head circumfrence went from routinely 50% to off the charts. We went and had the CAT scan done and everything was fine. I was worried, but my doctor told me it was probably genetic. My husband has a big head circumfrence so it made sense to me. But, I was glad we had it checked and now don't have to worry. Our son was developing fine, so I wasn't too worried. But, you are always worried when you hear that something "may" be wrong with their head/brain area. I am glad that everything turned out ok. My son is now 22 months old and still has off the charts head circumfrence, but is developing normally. He wears the same size hat as my 5 year old, so that has been tough trying to find hats for him.

I've noticed that the nurses that do the head circ. measurement don't always do it the same way. I bet if you went home and did it you would get a different number each time.
My oldest son's head measurement used to be off the chart (literally a dot above the regular chart). He doesn't/didn't have any problems and has since somewhat grown into his head (it is still big). My brother had a big head, but doesn't really anymore. I wouldn't worry. :P
