My daughter who is almost 4 sometimes complains of headaches and points to the back of her head. I've taken her to her pediatrician who said it sounds like migraines. A couple times she's gotten these headaches she's screamed and then maybe 20 minutes later she's fine. Short of taking her to the hospital for a cat scan (which I would like to do) does this sound like a migraine? I sort of a neurotic mom so I don't want to jump every time she has a headache but anything with the head makes me nervous.
Any suggestions?
Wow I never thought it could be her teeth. She was supposed to go to the dentist and I had to reschedule. She 's just turning 4 so could it actually be her molars coming in? I appreciate all the feedback - We're heading to the doctor this afternoon to see what we can figure out. Thank you again everyone!
Have you had her eyes checked by a pediatric opthamologist? Could it be eye strain?
It does not sound alarming but i would ask her doctor to request all the test if it is a recurrent headache.
When my daughter was around 5 she complained of headaches like that. For almost a 2 weeks off and and she would have frequent headaches and be fine 20 mins later. Come to find out it was her upper 6 yr molars causing her pain!! The upper back teeth can cause pressure and sinus discomfort while they are coming in. I felt bad because I didn't take her seriously at first till we went in for a dental checkup and the lady said her teether were coming in. Then I remembered the pain I had with my wisdom teeth coming in and it all made sense.
Take her to the dentist and see if she is getting teeth.

I know this is a little late... should the dentist not "work" a good chiropractor has helped our family and our children immensely with painful headaches and loss of mobility.
Also, does she get enough calcium, vitamin supplements, water? These deficiencies also lend to headaches.

My son started w/ migranes when he was almost 5. The CT scan will rule out other sources.
have you had her eyes checked? And not reading a chart at the pediatrician's but an actual exam done by an opthamologist. That would be where I would start.
My DH gets "cluster Migranes" all of the time, so when my son at 4 yrs old started complaining of headaches and screaming in pain. The nurse at his school used to call me to pick him up from school. I game him tylonal and called the Doctor, he had a CT and it was a sinus infection, who knew? I am not one to medicate my child for nothing but he was in to the doctor who checked his nose each time and did not see anything so now I will demand antibiotics before I radiate my child.

I had pediatric migraines. They started around 6 years old and lasted until I was about 10. Then in college, they started up again.
I have never had a migraine that was only in the back of my head. Sometimes they are severe enough that the back of my head hurts, but the pain usually starts in the temple area.
I distinctly remember as a child having horrible nausea and vomiting with my migraines.
If the pain is severe enough for her to be screaming, I would take her to the ER next time it happens. You should also have her eyes checked if you haven't done so already.
Saw your response. I just want to add that if her eyes aren't the problem, please consider a chiropractor. So many problems are related to the mechanics of our bodies, and we don't realize there's a problem until the symptoms are extreme. Good luck.
