Hi moms. I'm seeking health insurance for my family. My company just closed down and Cobra payments is just not an option for us. Has anyone had any luck in finding good quality health insurance on their own? Thanks.

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

You should give Sara Edwards a call! She is an independant consultant that has access to many of the major insurance carriers that you would recognize. She has helped so many of my friends with their insurance needs....she is knowledable, and helps to find the perfect fit for your families needs. I never hesitate to recommend her to my friends and family, because she has done such an amazing job for so many of them already. Her number is ###-###-####

We are on our own due to owning our own business. We did the research and came up with Aetna being the cheapest of th eones with solid coverage. It is only good if you and your family is generally healthy though because we have a huge deductible and office visit co-pays are $40 each which really adds up.

I am self employed and have Blue Cross Blue Shield. It's a little pricey, but it is one that I know is well accepted. I have NOT heard good things about Unicare or Humana.

You should contact your car/home insurance agent. They often carry health insurance as well and can give you rates.

Good luck.

S.,
Try this company. I have heard great things. I have 3 friends whose husbands are contract or self employed that said they beat anyone else's prices. Mega ###-###-#### or 800.527.5504 Agent's name is Bob Cain. I think you have to go through an agent. Try it out.

We are with United Healthcare (Golden Rule is the individual side as opposed to the group side) and have been very pleased so far. After a lot of research we went with their HSA (Health Savings Account) and added the preventative care package. The HSA works like basically a catastrophic policy where you are responsible for the deductible and then they cover 100% of expenses after the deductible. We chose the $5200 deductible so we pay around $300 a month for the policy and then $47 a month for the preventative care package and then around $450 a month goes into our HSA. With the preventative care package all of our daughters well-baby visits and immunizations are covered with a $35 co-pay as well as my husband and my annual physicals including my pap smear. The HSA made sense for us because we generally are pretty healthy and don't go to the doctor often (usually just once a year or so). We figure that we will spend around $1400 of our $5200 this year so next year we will only have to put the $1400 into the HSA as the balance carries forward indefinitely even if you get back on a group policy you can use it for deductibles, prescriptions, etc.

Anyway, it's just another avenue to explore. Good luck!

We are self-employed, and therefore must insure ourselves. I strongly encourage you to contact Deeann Jacobs of the Spectrum Group. She is extremely knowledgable, can offer information on a great number of plans, and perhaps best of all, she will come to you! Her number is ###-###-#### (this is her cell number).

FWIW, we went with the Aetna Advantage PPO plan; we pay $341/mo, and have a $40 copay for doc visits, which is fine because we don't go to the doctor often (knock on wood). It also includes annual physicals and paps for no out of pocket (which is pretty much the only time I ever go to the doctor). The copay for the hospital is middle of the road. In other words, it's ok coverage, and the cost is good. You can certainly buy more coverage for more $, but for us it doesn't make sense. She also offers dental, life insurance, financial planning, etc. Good luck!

S.,

You have several responses concerning your request for private health insurance. Make sure you do your homework on this, the facts are that 95% of the insured people in Texas have no idea how bad their coverage really is until a claim occurs, it's too late then.

I happen to be a broker health insurance, representing more than 20 carries, we know every policy inside and out and we have more than 50 years of experience in placing families into private health plans.

We have found over the years that not all plans are created equal. Of all the plans that were suggested to you below, only 1, the United Health Care plan "might" actually have the coverage that you believe you are purchasing.

Almost every carrier places HUGE limits of coverage in key areas to protect them from ever paying a big claim. Make sure you really understand what your getting before you buy. If anyone ever tells you "your maximum out of pocket is X" your antenna should go to the moon, it just don't work that way.

I hope this information is helpful to you, and good luck with your search.

G.
