Healthy Fast Breakfasts

Hi All,
I'm trying to eat healthier. Way too many carbs in my diet. Currently, breakfast for me is usually either a bagel and cream cheese or a nutrigrain bar - often eaten in my car. I'd like to have some kind of healthy, lean protein instead of this carb-heavy breakfast, which gives me a sugar rush and then crash before noon. I've started having hard-boiled eggs on hand, and I like those. But I'm looking for other healthy ideas that I can eat fast and on the go. No time for cooking in the morning.

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great ideas. I've never tried Greek yogurt, but I love regular yogurt and am sure I would like it. I'm not as sure about adding protein supplements to smoothies - just because I've never bought any of that kind of stuff. But again, I'm willing to give it a try. Keep the good ideas coming!

A sausage biscuit from the drive thru! (Hey--it's fast!lol)

Have you tried Better Oats instant oatmeal? Love it--cooked oatmeal consistency. Yummy. Really good, but not "car friendly" I guess.

A hard boiled egg is great protein. Have you tried microwave bacon?

Zone bar?
Peanut butter on toast or a half bagel?

I go to GNC and get their protein bars when they're on sale. I usually buy them for $.50 up to $1.00 when they are normally $3 each. If you get a gold card there, you can even get more discounts. Some of these protein bars have 20-30 grams of protein and they taste pretty decent. I'm not particular to any brand, I just try what ever is on sale. They're great to eat in the car.

I make smoothies every morning..I have a Magic Bullet and it is quite easy.
I add whey protein powder to almond milk a couple of spoonfuls of vanilla yogurt, a banana, and other fruits. I buy frozen fresh fruit and frozen fruit.
You can also do peanut butter and banana..add the yogurt for the acidophiles.
String cheese is good on the go too :)

For sure stop the Nutri-graint bar and opt for a protein bar, like Zone, if you enjoy eating like that.

And you can eat a Multi-grain bagel with cream cheese. Add some Lox to it, or a slice of turkey breast.

There are tons of great breakfast sausages now. I usually cook up a big package of those 1x week and the kids eat it throughout the week with a bowl of healthy cereal. That's on days I don't make them eggs or my famous oatmeal with multi-grains and buttermilk pancakes.

And there are many tasty Veggie meats. The breakfast bacon is pretty tasty. So are veggie burgers. So you could zap one of those and eat it with fruit.

I also make Banana Nut muffins, also with a multi-grain and flax seed mixture, and I add plain cocoa powder. And I use 4 bananas per recipe, so it's super moist and and full of protein with the walnuts. My kids teachers love it when I send those in to them. (not to the kid b/c of nut allergies)

GL!

The night before make a fresh fruit salad and stick it in containers so that it'll be ready for the next day. Vanilla yogurt and fresh berries or flax seed granola. Or even whole grain toasted bread with eggsalad just use fat free mayo!

we do all kinds of oatmeal in our house. Usually with peanut butter, maybe a few chocolate chips, sometimes nuts, and for sure some kind of fresh or dried fruit: banana, strawberries, apple, blueberries, raspberries, raisins, crasins, dried apricots. which every I feel like in the morning. it goes together in like 2 minutes.

Smoothies can be a good way to go; they've worked for me. I'd like to also suggest that whatever you have, drink a bottle of water in the morning.

Greek yogurt with some fruit! If you want to top it with something, try Kashi GoLean. The yogurt has about 14g protein, and the cereal has around 10g. They keep my full until lunch!

greek yogurt has a lot of protein in it. Layer that with some fresh fruit and granola in a homemade parfait. Delish!

I recently tried these muffin breakfast casserole thingys. Sure there's Bisquick, but there's also egg, ham, and cheese! I haven't made them yet, but here's the recipe. I tasted them and liked that they didn't crumble into a mess like a muffin would - therefore I could make this and hand it to my preschooler in the carseat and not worry about a huge mess. I was thinking I could make them Sunday and then Monday morning take them out of the fridge and pop them in the toaster oven for a few minutes to get warm and slightly toasty. Then Tuesday repeat.

3 TBS butter
1 1/2 cups Bisquick
1 1/2 cups (6 oz) finely shredded Cheddar Cheese
1/2 cup milk
1 large egg
1 cup finely chopped cooked ham
1/8 teaspoon garlic

Saute onion 3-5 minutes or until tender. Combine Bisquick and cheese in a large bowl. Make a well in the center of mixture. Stir milk, egg, and garlic blending well. Add to cheese mixture – stirring until moistened. Stir in onion and ham. Spoon into lightly greased muffin pans, filling 2/3 full. Bake 425 for 18 minutes or until golden. Let stand 2-3 minutes before removing from pans.

btw - kudos on the egg for breakfast. A lot of people think eggs are so bad for you but starting your morning with all that protein is a GOOD thing! (I used to eat two every morning when I was pregnant). If you wanted to change it up a bit, you could always make deviled eggs the night before. Or put in a little tupperware: raw egg, veggies, salt, pepper, cheese - then in the morning pour it all into a hot pan, cook it, then pour it into a to-go cup with a fork or into a tortilla and have a little taco.

peanut butter and honey sandwiches!! I also like to do home-made egg and sausage mcmuffins, I scramble the egg then fold it up like a little omlete, microwave the sausage patty and put it on a toasted muffin, top it w/ a slice of cheese; fast and yummy! (I use all natural, pre-cooked frozen sausage, organic cheese slices, and whole wheat english muffins) healthy!

My standby breakfast is a smoothie: frozen berries (no sugar/juices added), 1/2 cup walnuts or almonds, 2 tablespoons chia seeds, 1 scoop of protein powder, enough water to desired consistency.

On weekends, my husband will 'fry' eggs which I'll fold around strips of turkey bacon.

Cheesecake pancakes are low carb and low sugar, but you need two mixing bowls to make. They are great.

Breakfast muffins or mini quiches, where a small circle of toast is the only carb.

Good luck!

lots of times I'll have a 45 calorie bread piece of toast, and a 5 oz piece of swiss cheese or mozz cheese, and a piece of fruit. And maybe a little glass of skim milk. I can get all that ready the night before, and sometimes I do boiled eggs also. Try to load up on protein and not the cream cheese and bagel, and you'll find you have more energy.

I would say go to the library and check out some of the low carb diet cookbooks. My fil has all of them and is so much healthier now.

These cookbooks break the recipes down easily. I found many recipes that are good that I would never have considered.

My friend that was on pump insulin and nearly died from artificial sweeteners just watches her carbs now, she is insulin free since doing this. Nothing artificial at all, real sugar, butter, cream, whole milk, etc...she has been pneumonia free for 3 years now after having it up to 6 times per year, lost weight down to a 12-14 instead of weighing over 300lbs, is not having water retention issues, etc...she is much healthier since giving up artificial sweeteners, fake fat, and other unhealthy foods. Just counting her carbs has fixed her health issues.

So I am glad to see that you are looking for healthier foods too. Those cookbooks have tons of recipes in them. Happy eating!

You need to eat 2-4 eggs (i only eat the whites as the yolks give me the hiccups/too dry) to get the proper protein in the morning. I just picked up some protein bars by Zone Perfect that have 14g of protein (or try Clif?) A little carb is good for fuel---whole grain stuff. If you have time, maybe make a yogurt shake with Greek yogurt, or easier just eat a Greek yogurt. Or make the shake with regular yogurt and add a scoop of protein powder--just make sure you buy an all natural protein powder as you don't want those artificial favors and such.
