Heart Murmur - Reston,VA

My son has a murmur. It was found when he was about 1 1/2 only because we had a home nurse for a short period of time due to another issue. After that, I was always told the doctor could not find one or not to worry about it. I pushed for a echo at 4 and they did an ultrasound on him. They showed me that he has a little bit of muscle like a string of a violin. Every time his heart pumps/beats, the string twangs. This will not affect him at all and is actually hard to find unless you listen to just the right spot at the right time.

It's normal. People can be born with a murmur.

Heart murmurs are very common. They usually get diagnosed in the teens and early 20's. Sometimes this early. Worry does you no good until you know what is going on. I had a heart murmur with a mitral valve prolapse. The doctors told me that it would be there all my life. It resolved. I used alternative medicine.
This does not have to be a big deal.

my brother was 15 or 16 when he was diagnosed with a heart murmur during a routine sports physical for school. he had always played sports so many physicals and this one noticed the murmur. he had an operation to repair the opening on a valve. typically the surgery is done on small babies. at that age youngest brother was 6 ft according to my folks he was the oldest and biggest kid to have the surgery. his surgery was done in Richmond, VA.

I was born with a mild heart murmur but there was no follow up. They heard it again during a routine sports physical in high school. I had an echocardiogram and was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse. I was told it was very common and nothing to worry about, but I did have to take antibiotics before going to the dentist (to prevent bacterial heart infection). Prior to my first pregnancy, I had another echocardiogram to re-evaluate. They said the diagnostic criteria for MVP had changed in those 10 years and I no longer had it, even though I have a murmur originating from my mitral valve. Go figure. No more antibiotics for medical procedures. Even though it is very common and harmless, I am convinced I was and am symptomatic. I always had a terrible time with endurance sports, and have an incredibly high heart rate when I workout, no matter how in shape I am. Some say this is one of the symptoms of MVP Syndrome.

At my daughter's 12 year old check up, her doctor noticed a heart murmur for the first time. We went to see a cardiologist and had an echo and an ultrasound. Everything was completely normal. My daughter is very thin and it turns out that because she is so thin, the doctor was able to hear the normal swooshing of the blood in her heart (I guess it sounds exactly like a murmur.) Most doctors aren't able to hear this in regular size kids. Please don't panic- I know it's hard because I was freaked out too! It could turn out to be nothing.

Yes, be concerned, it could be any number of things, but wait untill he is seen be a cardiologist. They will determing if it is nothing to be worried about or if it is something bigger. Good Luck.
