There is going to be a variety on ages at the party *he doesnt have any friends since he is now at home daycare with my mother. Any advice on activities?

Have you picked out a theme for the party yet? I always create an activity book that has coloring pages, puzzles, trivia questions, jokes, or mazes that are all related to the theme. You can staple these together or punch holes on the side and bind them with curling ribbon. Kids of any age will enjoy coloring and working on the puzzles and they can take it home as a keepsake.

Hi Bobbie,

How fun! The first birthday party is a lot of fun (ok, for the parents... I'm not sure baby really gets what's going on!).

Pinata's are always fun for the older kids. Target and Walmart both have them in the party section. You don't have to put candy in them - we put little things we picked up from the dollar store and the kids thought it was great.

We also had a couple of those big, giant coloring books and some ColorWonders coloring pages, ColorWonder finger paints and then crayons for the regular coloring books. Lots of the kids enjoyed those.

For the rest, we just ate cup cakes and play music and ran around outside!

Oh, my mom's husband brought some airplanes... I'd have to ask where he got them, but they were made out of styrofoam and the kids could put the wings through the body and then just sail them around the yard. Those were a big hit, too.

Have fun. Hope you get lots of good ideas.

I second the pinata idea, you can also get them at Party City. Water ballon fights, musical chairs, relay races (2 people ties one of their legs together and race to the finish line), potato sack races. Or they have to dress really fast in bigger clothes... Here are some relay and game ideas.

You can always have a slip n slide if you don't mind people getting too wet, which might be fun if it get's really hot. Or you can rent a bounce house.

And then have some bbq and hot dogs and cake and ice cream.

Pin the tail on the donkey, nose on the clown, pants on sponge bob, ect.

Bobbing for apples is lots of fun!

Face paintings (if alot of older children are comming)

Pinata's are a big hit!

Or you could have a wet-party...
slip-n-slid, kiddie pool, water sprinkler, ect. Just be sure to tell everyone to bring or come in their swimsuits!

Most important, Just have FUN! Thats what it's all about. Your child is only going to turn 1, once so enjoy every min of it! Good luck!!

For my sons first birthday party we had two horses - one horse for the older kids and a pony for the younger ones. It worked out great and it was not that expensive. All of the kids had a great time!
