Oh yes, night terrors. They can be extremely scary if you have no idea what they are. They're basically bad dreams. It's very difficult to wake a child from these. Its best to just let them go through it. There is no harm done unless they fall out of bed or something...so you might just want to stick by their side until it ends. My oldest son had these from the time he was 10 months until he was about 3 years old.

Good luck

With him only being 8 months old, are you alredy feeding him on solid food? Did you introduce anything differently in his diet? Diet is one thing, but also look at his stools. Is he still having a bowel movement every day? Waking up screaming could mean anything from constipated, to hungry...but more than likey....
8-10 months...CHECK THE TEETH. He may just start having his teeth come in somewhere. My youngest screamed for 3 nights stright before I found them. I was washing his mouth while in the bath and he BIT me..lol Yep, they had already broken the skin before I found them. Even if you don't feel them, do a trial by putting a little baby jel on the gums and see if he sleeps any better. If he does, you pretty much know what was his reason for crying. cutting teeth has to hurt

I would also tend to think at this age it is probably either his tummy/constipation or teeth. My little one is experiencing alot of pain from teeth too. I remember a friend of mine used the homeopathic teething tablets you can buy over the counter at any pharmacy. She said they were miraculous for her SCREAMING baby. He was inconsolable until they got those tablets. You might try them if you suspect teeth is the issue. Hang in there. This too will pass :)

My daughter, Ryleigh, is 2, and has had night terrors since she was an infant. This may stem from her daddy who was a sleep walker for most of his life. When she was really little I would give her the over-the-counter herbal teether (in the baby section)just as a precaution for a gassy tummy. But I read a few books (What to Expect the First Year) and they really stress having a calming routine before bed. Most everyone I talked to said a nice warm bath before bed. When she was small enough for the swing, she slept in that all the time. Now that she is to big I have (which she picked) a light show/lullaby music in her crib. It has fish and slow swinging monkeys and water noise in the background. It's very calming for her and she can control when it plays and stops.

This doesn't guarantee having no night terrors, she still occasionaly has them (once a week maybe). She opens her eyes and looks right at me, screams for me, and pushes & hits at me thinking i'm someone else. The only thing you can do for him at that point is soothe him and let him work out of it. I'll set her on the couch or walk around with her as I rub her back, tummy and face and talk to her calmingly. If you act frustrated it feeds into his night terror. Your calm voice will feed into his dream and help him out of it.

I should stress the ear infection though. Whenever my daughter had one, it only bothered her when she was sleeping and she would become hysterical otherwise she never tugged at it and was happy. You should definately take him to the doctor to atleast rule it out before assuming its night terrors. Good luck.

it could be night terrors....but it could also be his diet..my nephew used to do that after eating garlic.....could be the same thing for you. He grew out of it and can eat garlic fine now. Good Luck.

OH i love his name...
any how my son had some night terrors and the onlything that worked was making us both topless and hoding him agianst my skin it even worked for his dad..and talk softly while doing it. saying stuff like im here its all better, ya know the mommy stuff. And check on the teath .. see how there doing. sometimes a ruff breakthru will cause this. Besides a little ambasol never hurt. And if he's like in a walker or buncey.. my mom had me walk my son on the lanolim floor.. she said his legs could be crampin up. My son was an early walker...
OH and lets not forget ears.. My son showed no signs of ear infections except at night. he never even pulled on them.. so check all avenues. and good luck.. i remember those nights well.

From what i have experienced with my boy (now almost 3) I did a lot of research on night terrors since I had them as a young child. They generally don't start until around 2 years old and their imaginations start going into over drive. Not discounting them though just telling you what I found out.

It sounds alot to me like teeth, tummy issues or, could even be muscle cramping from his ever changing ever growing bodies. So my advice to you is to pick one of those options and go thru the list until you find the one that it is. At 8 months it could be those nasty first molars starting to let you know they are coming.

my daughter went thru this when she hit about 11 months old..it's tough and sad but all you can do is try to soothe him-don't try to wake him up- it only makes it last longer

my son is 4 and he never had these untill he started preschool last year, which was also the same time he started sleeping in his own bed. My son has Autism. SO I'm not really sure why he does this but my 5 month old son (his younger brother)sleeps better through the night than my oldest..I hav ebeen trying to ask him to talk about it but since your son is so little you may have to try to do most the work yourself..My fisrt questions would be has anyhting changed the could he be sick or teething.Alot of possiblies could be the cause and it could be more than one reason. also if your not happy with your doctors advice its ok to get a 2nd opinion form another dr.
