Hi Everyone,

My two year old boy is basically fine during the day. However during the night, every night for the last couple of months, he would get a coughing spell during the night around 2-3am. It only last for a few minutes and it seems like he has some flam in his throat but he's too young to know how to hack it out. It doesnt sound like croup or anything else. He's not allergic to anything that we know of too. We tried claritin and now this nose drip which seems to be making it worse. Please let me know if you had any experience with this.
Also, I am trying for another baby and thought I might have been pregnant, it would only be 3 weeks if I am correct so no pregnancy test yet. However last week, I had a bad fever and took cold medications and yesterday on, I have some bleeding. My period is not due until end of next week so I am thinking it's a miscarriage because it's not like my normal period either. If anyone had a miscarriage during the first 2-3 weeks, can you please let me know what kind of symptoms did you have and if I need to go in for a checkup or what should I do.

Thanks...sorry for all the issues!!!

What can I do next?

Hi M.,

I had several miscarriages at 4-5 weeks and never went to the doctor except to discuss why the miscarriages occurred. I hope it wasn't a miscarriage, but if it was then your body is most likely shedding it. Probably best not to focus it on it too much since there's nothing you can do anyway. Don't blame yourself thinking you caused it with the meds. My OB said most miscarriages occur for genetic reasons. Sorry I don't have any helpful comments about your son. I have allergies and they always do seem worse at night. I can't remember why my allergist said symptoms are generally worse at night. I hope his sleep issues will improve soon.

I had a miscarriage in my 3rd week last Sept. I actually knew i was pregnant because my hormone levels tend to run very high and I get morning sickness very early on. Two days after I found out, I started having horrible cramps and then i started bleeding. It was just a little bleeding for the first several hours, but then i had very heavy bleeding and cramping for the next 3 days. The bleeding lasted for 2 weeks, but then I was physically okay, but since i knew i was pregnant and we had been trying emotionally i was not.

I did not have a fever or anything though, I was just nausous (spelling) a lot.

IN RE: to the coughing child. My friend's son did this in the night and he did end up having allergies. He however was also coughing during the day when his allergy medicine would wear off. He was taking Zyrtex. He was never tested for allergies, but their doctor diagnosed seasonal. Since he is still having coughing episodes, and Zyrtex no longer relieves, I am betting that the child is allergic to something else---like dust, mold, or the down comforter. No one has tested him yet. But the night time coughing could be allergies.

Can't help with the miscarriage but maybe the other issue. Our daughter, age 5, has had a similar problem since she was a little runt. She would cough until she barfed at night but was fine during the day. We found cough meds didn't work and she had a bit of nasal drippage as well. Kinda like junk was going in her throat and causing her to cough. We started using a cool mist humidifier at night and it worked wonders. I don't know if the added moisture is enought to keep the phlemg thinned out or if it helps the drainage...I'm really not sure...but when she lays down and starts coughing we hook up the mister on about a medium high output and she sleeps through the night.

My son used to wake up in the middle of the night with coughing fits. It seems like he couldn't catch his breath. Then he would cough more because he was coughing so much and sort of freak out. It turned out at the age of 4 he had a cold, we were at my aunt's house (they smoke) and he had an asthma attack. We had to go to the er and he was in the hospital for one night until he was breathing better. We had to buy a nebulizer as well. He had to have breathing treatments 3 times a day for a few weeks and then I would use it after that as needed. They called it reactive airway disease. He would only have asthma like symptoms/attacks when he had a cold. He is now 13 and has grown out of it. It M. be something to just mention to the doctor next visit. Also with the miscarriage, you haven't taken a pregnancy test but you are not quite late correct. If you were having a miscarriage you would bleed like a normal period. If it is only minimal you M. be experiencing implantation bleeding. The time you are supposed to get your period is the time the egg implants to the uterine wall and sometimes this causes minimal spotting. I had this with my first and thought it was a period but I was planning my wedding so thought the stress made for a light period. This was a month before my wedding. On my wedding day I was due my period again. It never came. I had a shot gun wedding and didn't even know it. That pregnancy went by really fast because by the time I went for my 8 week check up and had an ultra sound I was 13 weeks. Anyway, if the bleeding is very light (more like spotting for a day), I would try a pregnancy test. If it's negative, I would treat it like a period. If it's positive, congratualtions girl and make your 8 week appointment.
