I am wanting to know if there are any mothers out there that had problems with their gallbladder while pregnant and was the gallbladder removed while pregnant? I am in severe pain and have already had to go in the hospital. I really want it removed but my doctor wants to put me on a diet first to see if that will help control it. I don't want to hurt the baby, but I don't think I can go 21 more weeks in this pain. HELP!!

What can I do next?

My sister had severe pain with her third pregnancy that she said felt like chest pain. Her doctor ignored it and it turned out to be pancreatitis. She had a severe infection by the end of her pregnancy and very high levels of whatever pancreatitis causes in her blood. She had to have her gall bladder removed and was put on antibiotics after the baby was born. I would have your doctor take blood and make sure it isn't worse than just the gall bladder. From what we found out after the fact, this is very serious and can lead to death if not treated and taken care of quickly. Not trying to scare you, just don't let them blow you off. My sister's doctor thought she was just a whiney woman and that it was just reflux. After he got her blood results back, he was sweet as pie. (Didn't want a lawsuit) Good Luck with everything and hope this helps.

I did have this when I was pregnant with my first child. I did not have the surgery, due to my Dr. explaining the risks. I did change my diet and it did help, now I did have what I called a gallbladder attack (the painful episode)once or twice when the baby decided to kick and contracted my gallbladder, but of coarse I changed my diet. That did make a BIG difference. Then I didn't have a problem till after my daughter was born and had the surgery when she was 2 months old to the day. Sometimes it helps when the Dr. wants you to try an alternative method. He's a good Dr. if he doesn't pick surgery first....
Lots of luck!!!

A., I can't help much as I have not ever experienced that. But my advice would be to follow a diet before surgery. Make a diary of what you eat and see what sets the gall bladder off. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

Hi,

I am a labor and delivery nurse and I recommend you try the diet first, a serious try. I had gallbladder problems myself for a couple years before I got it diagnosed and I know you are feeling miserable. Yes, you can have surgery while you are pregnant and it can go ok. But if for some reason it doesn't go ok, all surgeries have risks, you and your baby could be in serious danger. Give the diet a serious try.

Hi A.! I haven't personaly gone thru this but my cousin did. She had hers emoved when 4 months pregnant and everythings went fine. She has a healthy baby boy and her recovery time was only 1 week and was back at work. Of course you should talk with your doc and make sure it is right for you, but it worked out great for Jen. Hope this helps

I had my 1st attack when I was about 20 weeks pregnant with my youngest and I thought that I was having a heart attack. My Dr. put me on a special diet and it helped, but every once in a while I still had an attack. My son was 3 months old when I finally had the surgery -- but give the diet a try first - it will probably help and get you thru your pregnancy, then you can have the surgery.

I didnt but my neighbor did when she was pregnant with her 2nd. The thought of surgery is scary but everything went fine, the gall bladder was removed and a few months later a healthy baby girl was born. She research her doctors and planned it out the best that she could.

Hope this helps a little, good luck and best wishes.
