Has anyone ever heard of "Ring Around the Mouth"? My daughter gets what I call chapped lips and my ex-mother-in-law calls it ring around the mouth. She says it's from keeping a pacifier in to long.
If she get's dry lips in winter, and she is druling, then it chapped lips. It's also called ring around the mouth.Just try and keep it dry.
Have you ever tried Alum? Its a spice that you would find in the spice section. I found out that it works really well for cold sores, canker sores. Then my husband and I decided to try it on cuts and chapped lips and found out that it works really well also. It healed within a day after applying it on. It stings for a few seconds when you first apply it but its my new miracle medicine for these things. You could also try Carmex for it.
My son had that every winter when the air was dry. His lips got dry and he licked them and got that ring. I solved the problem by having chapstick in every room. That way we remembered to use it often. Lips healed.
I'd say it's probably just chapped lips. It's winter time. It's dry. I don't have the problem around the lips, but my 4 month olds cheeks and in front of her ears are so chapped they bleed. I've used Aveeno for baby and thats working wonderful. I'm guessing your little one has the same thing, just around her lips.
My stepdaughter had that, but she was well past the pacifier stage - she got it from licking her lips and the skin around her lips got chapped, too. I suppose that this could happen from the pacifier trapping the moisture, too. Try to use chapstick to help, although, if she licks it, it might not help too much!

My kids got that very easily. My youngest is 8 1/2 and he gets it all the time. I put lotion on it. When they were little I put a little desitin on them too. It did help it clear up. You might want to try to get rid of the binky. Good luck!!!
I have never heard of this. How long did your daughter use a pacifier? My son used one until 2 1/2 and never had this, so I am not sure, but he does have dry skin and he had excema at this age. It could just be the winter drying her out. Try some mild lotion like aveeno or a petroleum unless you think she will try to lick it. I personally think it is just her skin. She may just be more sensitive.
My daughter gets a rash type thing around her mouth from drooling and the pacifier does contribute some to it, and so does her playing outside in the cold at daycare. Our Dr. told me to put aquaphor on it and it works like a charm to clear it up.
yes us parents that kids are growing up now call it chapped lips from licking them your Ex mother inlaw just dose not have a clue put a little chap stick or carmax
Both my older kids had this at some point, and neither of them had a pacifier, I don't use them and find nothing benefical about them. I think it is more like chapped lips.
I would agree with your ex-mother-in-law that it is from the pacifier. Or if she is still taking a bottle that could be part of the problem as well. I agree with the other response, slap some aquaphor on there and she will be just fine.
Little kids lick their lips a lot, too, especially when they are already chapped b/c they feel dry and sore. You are right, it is actually chapped, MIL just calls it an old-fashioned name. It's nothing a little aquaphor, chap stick, etc. won't heal...just keep applying it as she will like it off.

yes, i have heard of this-- it can be known as other names by different people. it's basically harmless. it's caused by drooling mostly-- like when they're teething, etc. yes, the pacifiers do contribute to the area being kept wet, tho but it's not (imho) that they've used it too long. i just always wipe vaseline or clear diaper cream around her mouth and/or on the plastic part of the pacifier and it helps a lot. if you do it consistently, it will not be a problem for long, i don't think. :)
Why does a 2 1/2 year old still have a pacifier? You should get rid of it and the ring will disappear.
OK--my 10 year old has this now, and he hasn't had a pacifier in his mouth for 8 years!! I's chapped lips. Let what your ex-mother-in-law says go in one ear and out the other--LOL.
Break open a vitamin E capsule and spread it on there 2-4x a day. It's an excellent skin healer.
Aloe Vera, use like a lotion.
When going to sleep, honey as an ointment, or a lotion. In the morning, wash her face well (always wash her face well :) ).

I have! It (pacifiers) can cause all kinds of trouble with teeth formation, viral skin infections and even fungus! Out by two!
There are all kinds of ways to break the habbit. One is slowly removing the other self soothing items like blankets and bedtime toys and try to switch up the bedtime routine. The passy and blanket are often used together, try removing one at a time, in your case the passy. Start by elimating the day time use and once they fall asleep remove it.
Some dentists say stop at One! That is very hard too, I say stop when bottles are no longer used, and real cups (the ones without the sip action) are used.
I have helped raise about 200 infants in the last 27 years of providing day care, and this is one of the hardest things to stop. Good luck to you.
