I am nursing a 2 1/2 month oln baby girl and my allergies have kicked in at full force. I spent a pretty sleepless night last night. Needless to say I can't afford to be the cause of me not sleeping. I called 2 different CVS last night and the first said no antihistamines they may dry my milk and to try cough drops. I called another to see if I could just take at night. She checked lots in their system and said they all will go in breastmilk and some can cause seizure activity in little ones. Great. So do I have to suffer through allergy season. Has anybody found anything they could do or take while nursing with no ill effects on their milk supply or the baby.

Hi A.,

I know of a company that can help tremendously. All of their products are naturally based. They even have prenatal vitamins!!! (I'm taking them now being pregnant with my third child) I beleived in this company and the things it did for my family that I completely converted my home to their products and invested in my own business with them. (I don't sell their products I just tell people what they have done for me). I know this company can help you. visit www.homeofficemamma.com for my information and you can look into the company at www.melaleuca.com. If you're interested in the products, let me know and I can save you some money.
Good Luck

I would encourage you to get an air purifier for the main rooms in the house. Also to look into getting natural cleaning products without harmful chemicals (which can trigger allergies). Contact me if you'd like more info on that kind of thing! Di

Hi A. -

I have allergies all year round. I take over the counter Claritin (NOT Claritin-D) and prescription Nasonex. I took them during my entire pregnancy as needed and am currently nursing my 6 month old son. It's had no ill-effects that I can see. My supply has been fine and my doctor told me that it wouldn't be harmful to the baby. You are not supposed to take decongestants like pseudoephederine (Sudafed) because those can dry up your supply but antihistamines like Claritin or the like should be ok. Just avoid the ones that also contain a decongestant. I also use saline drops to keep my nasal passages clear since the decongestants are off limits. It actually works pretty well.

I need to try that Neti pot though! I've heard great things about them.

Good Luck!

Hi A.,

I nursed my 19 month old son for one year while suffering from my allergies. Ask your doctor about Allegra-D and Nasonex. I used both daily during my entire pregnancy as well as the entire year I breastfed with no ill effects for me or the baby. Just be certain to drink plenty of fluids to keep up your milk supply.

Good luck!

Hi A.,
I know what your going through. My 7 year old started having "seasonal" allergies. She is sick all of the time. She just had a pneumonia a couple of weeks ago, and seems to have a chronic cough. She has been on inhalers and all kinds of medication. I have recently learned about a wellness company, which I joined. Their products are natural, non-toxic household items, along with just about everything from supplements, vitamins for adults and children, which have no artificial colors or preservatives. Their toothpaste that could even clean your silver, without worrying about toxic chemicals! I just became very excited about their products and love to you with anyone I can. There are many testimonies of mothers telling their stories of their children suffering from allergies, who have gone from being on many medications and inhalers, to nothing. Simply because they eliminated their regular "household" items, and substituted them with these natural, non-toxic products. I am a great fan. Not only am I a registered nurse, but a mom who wants her children to live in a healthy, clean environment. If you want to learn more about this, you can contact me at ____@____.com or www.stayinhomeandlovinit.com/melena. There's nothing to lose, but much to gain!! Thanks! Marie, RN, BSN

Hi A.,

My doctor told me that Zyrtec (which is now OTC) was OK. He said I could take anything I could take while pregnant (which included Sudafed). I wish I found something that would have dried up my milk supply. Nothing seemed to affect it, even long after I stopped nursing.

Good luck!! Allergies are miserable.

Bring honey, garlic and lemon juice to a boil, and menthol and take 2 tablespoons every 4 to 6 hours. My mother inlaw gave me this when I was feeding my now 16yr old. It is also good for the common cold. The children were in no dangers and are very used to it now. GOOD LUCK!! IM 43 HAD 6 CHILDREN AND HAVE 2 TO LEAVE THE NEST.

My midwife recommended Benedryl. The generic name is Diphenhydramine HCL. I take 25mg every 4 hours. I like that more than the once a day Claratin (generic Loratadin). She also recommended it for sleeping as well. I take 2 capsuls for sleeping (50mg).

Like with most medicines, it will cross into your breastmilk, making baby sleepier than normal, but when you aren't feeling well, that may not be so bad!!

**DISCLAIMER** Benedryl does have the reverse affects on some people. Instead of making them sleepy, it makes them hyper. Watch for signs in your baby.

My daughter is highly allergic and her allergist suggested over the counter nasalcrom. The reason for that is it's not a steroid. You can ask the pharmacist or your doctor if its ok to take while breastfeeding..

Dr. Oz recommended the netti pot on the Oprah show. Here is a link: http://www.oprah.com/health/oz/oz_20070426_350_106.jhtml

I have only heard good things about it. Basically, you are flushing your sinus cavity on a regular basis with water. If your allergies are just seasonal, then this product should be very effective.

I am on antihistamines to surpress my immune system for other reasons. If you see an allergist or immunologist on a regular basis then I would ask that doctor first before stopping/starting antihistamines.

Try using a Neti pot. I have horrible allergies, and hate using nasal sprays, so it took me awhile to come around to the Neti pot, but I swear, it works better than anything I've ever tried! Also, if you can get honey from local sources, try using that instead of sugar. Or taking a spoonful or two a day. The honey will have local pollens, thus helping you to "get used" to the allergens in the air.
