Apparently my oven hates me... I just burnt about 2 dozen sugar cookies that I needed to make, frost, and decorate by tmrw for my daughters birthday at school. Any creative ways to scrap the burned part off the bottom? I thought about frosting the burnt part, but honestly, these are pretty gross. I don't have the time to go to the store, buy more stuff, bake more, etc... PLEASE HELP! I know this is trivial but it's SO super important to my 5 year old!! Thanks ladies :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

AHHHH! SO not the answer I was looking for, but I totally appreciate the honesty :) Time to pack up the baby and off to the store... Thanks SOOOO MUCH!! Should've just bought pre-made cookies to begin with and stop trying to be Betty Crocker! LOL!!

Don't feel too bad. At most places around here, we HAVE to take in store bought. Too many allergies and they want to know what is in them:( And next year, no sweets at all:(( in the public schools.

Go buy cookies and frost them - or go buy some cupcakes... the burned-on residue will be there for a while, they'll need to soak....

oh yeah, lost cause, sister...but good try! And it's not trivial at all, it's important! But, you're still going to need to buy something else. I would suggest either getting some pre-made dough and baking that and frosting them or getting already made sugar cookies and then adding your own frosting and sprinkles to look homemade. Or...just buy already baked and frosted cookies and try again next time!

The other suggestion I had was if you buy some cupcakes from the store, just take them home, smooth out the frosting a bit with a knife and add some sprinkles, M&Ms, or a little ring or trinket to the top and they appear homemade even when they're not!

Good luck and maybe you and your kiddo can redo some cookies later this week for their special day at home!

I'm a baker and I can tell you your oven doesn't hate you but you probably need to go out and get an oven thermometer! It will be the best couple of dollars you spend. Most ovens don't run exactly at the temp you set it to. My last oven was off by 25 degrees. Oven thermometer to the rescue!

The ladies are right. Unfortunately there isn't any way to salvage these cookies. If you don't have time to rebake then you will have to buy something. Explain to your daughter and ask her to choose what you guys buy-cookies or cupcakes or whatever the choices might be!

Buy some ready made and frost them yourself. I second the oven thermometer. Also, what kind of baking sheet are you using? The darker the sheet, the darker the cookie bottom.

If it's important for your 5 year old, DON'T be the mommy that brought the really gross cookies.

I agree with others to go buy sugar cookies already cooked (I like the ones in our bakery - they're perfectly round and soft). Then frost those.

even if you take a knife and scrap them, they will still have the burnt taste. Unfortantly, the only thing to do is buy more stuff or got buy premade cookies. Once a cookie is burnt, it is forever gross :( Sorry!

This won't help for what's passed but the cookie sheets that are double thickness with holes on the bottom don't burn cookies. I think mine are wearever brand.

Also, I've made treats with the kids for school by dipping pretzel rods in melted chocolate and rolling them in sprinkles. It's super easy, looks cute, tastes fine, and the kids can help.

Hope you figured something out.

Just an FYI, sugar cookies and things with a lot of sugar and maybe not as much fat, will burn easily. It's best to cook them on parchment paper which helps A LOT! Also, if you can cook on a lighter sheet as opposed to a dark cookie sheet, that helps. And, as others suggested, you can have your oven calibrated. My oven runs hot so I always back off my cook time when I set my timer. Every oven is different. Seriously, try the parchment paper next time. Sorry, I have no help to offer for this time - I think they are trash. :(

You need to have your oven calibrated. It sounds like it is running too hot.

No hope on the cookies.. I agree purchase cookies and frost them.

you may not need your stove calibrated. I burned so many batches of cookies that I was sure it was the stove. I ended up calling a repair guy and he charged me $50.00, checked to see if the stove needed to be calibrated and ended up telling me to always place the metal rack in the center slot. my slot was on the next lower one and just too close to the heat therefore everything burned. It was $50.00 well spent, but I felt like a fool that I didnt' know any better.

Your grocery store deli should have freshly baked and frosted cookies available for purchase. Scrap the homemade idea this year and get your oven calibrated.
