Hi all,
Does anyone know the dangers of cat urine? My son (3 months old) might have put his hand in a drop of cat urine, and then into his mouth! He was also sucking on some padding that also may have receive a few drops of urine. What are the dangers and should I call his pediatrician?

What happened is my moms cat urinated on our play pin cover without us knowing (happened in minutes) and when my mom pick the cover up, the urine spilled and a bit got on the car seat my son was seated in. We didnt even know at the time what the liquid was at first, wondered if it was urine, but couldn't see how since we didn't see it happen. I am so scared! Could he get infected with Toxoplasma? I heard it is present in cat feces but is it also in cat urine? My moms 2 cats are indoor and out door cats.

What can I do next?

Relax, you are ok. Your baby is tougher than you think.

When you go to your mom's house have a strong squirt bottle with water (or vinegar) in it and watch the cat. The cat marked the baby (which means he likes him)so it's intent was good but we humans don't think the same way.

Hi Li, sounds nasty, babies drool so much that i don't think they ingest to much, all 3 of my kds were aroun cats as infants, and i had a couple cats that would spray, my kids never got sick, I tried to make sure the cats were not being disgusting around the babies things, but like you said, you didn't see it happen, Just watch him, and if nothing developes in 48 hours, don't worry, just ask mom to watch her cats around the baby things, cats are attracted to the smaell of baby things. Well, I would imagine that your baby will be fine, but cleaning it up with water and vinager is the easiest and safest way to clean it up. I would definitly wash all clothes again because of cat hair and cat saliva that can get in the babies mouth and cause problems . I'd wash baby again too. I would have freaked out, so you are pretty strong to go through that. Just keep things clean when it comes to cat urine etc... i'd just make sure everything is sterile again GOOD LUCK!!!

I'm pretty sure toxoplamosis is just in the feces, urine is typically pretty sterile. Don't beat yourself up over this - stuff just happens when you are a first time mom. Also, I think toxoplamosis is really only terribly dangerous when you are pregnant or if you have a really surpressed immunine system - like with advanced HIV, etc. In fact, I was worried about it with both of my pregnancies because I have cats, and the doctor told me that I may have had it at some point and probably didn't even know.

Anyway, I'm sure your munchkin is ok - call the pediatrician to ease your mind.
