Help! Diapers and Pull-ups Not Doing Their Job-

Hi Moms!
Help me find a diaper/pull-up that keeps my 3 year old boy dry all night. I've currently been using pull-ups but just switched back to diapers thinking the pull-ups were my problem....nope!

Please keep in mind I've tried many brands of diapers and pull-ups. Nothing is keeping him dry.

What can I do next?

The best we've tried are the Overnites pullups and Underjams (we like the underjams better for not leaking).

Sometimes when DS had leaking problems at night, it was because he was in the wrong size. Sometimes even when their weight fits a certain size, they actually need the next size up. That was the case for my DS.

FYI--Don't feel you have to push the "staying dry at night" at this age. It's very common for kids--especially boys--to have trouble with the nighttime training. It took DS until he was 8 (and we used an alarm) to stay dry at night consistently. When we'd discuss this with his pediatrician, she always said it's very common and nothing to be concerned about before the age of 7 or 8.

At 3 years old he should be waking up dry and potty training atleast...

That's how we knew when to start potty training at the daycare I worked at if they woke up dry, we'd put them on the potty immediately.

I would limit his liquid after dinner, try overnight diapers.

Don't stress about potty training not being perfect at this age.. I knew tons of kids from teaching at a day care that still did pull ups/diapers at 3 and working on potty training.

I don't know if Babies R Us makes them in pull-ups.. but I love their Especially for Babies diapers for my 9 month old son. He had H1N1 with terrible diarrhea and the diaper would hold EVERYTHING. They don't work for some people, but they work very well for us. Maybe check to see if they do pull ups in that brand? I know Fisher Price also brought out night time diapers (again, don't know about pull ups for these) and I've heard good things about those too. We haven't needed to switch to an overnight diaper yet so I can't help you there.

Good luck!

I've had good luck with Huggies Overnites. Try going up a size bigger then he normally wears. Also you might try adding a maxipad (the kind with the sticky back) to the inside of his diapers to help absorb more.

We had the same problem and did not end up fixing it with diapers. We actually started having him use the potty at night and when he first woke up. This kept him dry all night very quickly, even before he was using the potty during the day. When he did become fully potty-trained, he was already staying dry all night, and we have not had any night-time accidents in a few months. Hope this helps!

Hello L.,

I was having the same issues with my 3 1/2 year old. I was an avid Huggies user and nothing else until I found Walgreen’s Brand. Man they are the best and recommend them to every one! They are inexpensive, but are more absorbent. They have great sales on the diapers, pull-ups and the nighttime ones all the time and when they go on sale I stockpile them. I know where I live I can get a size 4 pack of like 28 or so for $5.99 and that is their regular price. Good luck I know how difficult and frustrating it is! Praying for dry nights for you!!! :)

Hi L. -

We used and loved Huggies overnight diapers, however I believe they only go up to size 5 or 6 and my son was starting to out grow them (he is currently 4 1/2 and still needs overnight protection). I am currently using Under Jams Night Wear and I really love them. The smallest size starts at 38 pounds so they are a good fit for an older/bigger child.

Hi L.,
We use Huggies Overnights (one size larger than what my daughter wears as an every day diaper). I have one or two leaks since we switched, but overall, these diapers have been great! Good luck!!

We had this problem in the past and the pediatrician recommended that we get his regular size diaper in the over nights kind...for extra absorbency...and then put another regular diaper in the next size up over it...so he wore two diapers. This worked great! No more washing the sheets and bedding every morning! YAY!

Have you tried the Huggies Overnites? They work great for us... You could also try doubling up the diapers- put one size bigger over the current size diaper... Good luck!

For my 4 yr old, who STILL has bedtime wetting issues, I use a size 5 OVERNITE Huggies, AND I take a size NB or 1, offbrand(like Sams Club) diapers, tear the sides off of that and put it inside the Huggies diaper, like a liner. Works like a charm!

Huggies overnights or the good night pull ups. The underjams work also. My sister still has that problem at 6 yrs old and that's what my mom gets for her and they work. Huggies overnights worked for all 3 of my kids

Good Nights are the best I have found. I struggled with that same problem too! Every once in a while the Good Nights pull-ups will leak, but not near as often as the other brands.

Beth H. said that at his age he should not be wetting the bed at night..... It has nothing to do with age. It has to do with a brain to bladder connection that will develop with time. I just wanted to clear that up!

I hope this helps!

We had to use Huggies Overnight when my son was in diapers and still use the nighttime Pull Ups. They really do work better than the regular "daytime" ones.

I have a daughter that is a bed wetter she is almost 7.. we either use Good nites brand in purple bag.. but to cut cost we found that the walgreens brand works just as well minus the fancy print on the outside.. the walgreens brand even goes on sale for as low as 6 dollars a bag!!

We had similar issues and about 2 months ago started limiting liquid 1-1/2 before bed. This helped with the leaking problem. And as of this week we have now had 4 dry mornings in a row.

Maybe it is time to start encouraging night time training.
