Help Going from Breastmilk to Formula (10 Month Old Hates Taste of Formula)

I have to transition my 10 1/2 month old daughter from Breastmilk to Formula and she does not like the taste and refuses to drink the formula. Any ideas on how to get her to drink? A co-worker suggested adding vanilla flavored Carnation Instant Breakfast to her bottle but that just seems like I would be giving her to much unnecessary sugar. I thought of a banana blended into the formula but I am not sure it would be thin enough to make it though the nipple. Any ideas/suggestions?? Thanks.

What can I do next?

Hi M.!
Is there any specific reason you are transition from breastmilk to formula? I don't know ONE SINGLE baby that has preferred formula to the breast milk!! So this is going to be a tough battle. Is there any reason you cannot continue nursing or at least pumping and giving her breastmilk that way?

The fact that your daughter is 10 months and still breastfeeding is AWESOME!
You obviously know that breastfeeding past the age of one increases IQ anywhere from 6-20 points, and reduces the risk for childhood and adult obesity!! So proud of you!
My 28 month old daughter is still nursing, (right now, just at night, when going to sleep)
I haven't encouraged, nor discouraged her, and she is slowly weaning herself. wanting to soothe with a little stuff animal she carries instead.
Good Luck, and I think at 12 months you can give her cow milk if she has NO allergies.
Most babies prefer cow milk to formula if they have been exclusively breastfed.
P.S. My mom is an breatfeeding advocate, midwife, and lactation consultant if you ever need any questions answered.

Hi M.,

It's great that you have breastfed your daughter for this long, and if you could do it longer that would be even better. But, with that being said, it doesn't always work out that way. I breastfed but then when I weaned my daughter I was giving her raw goats milk which is the next best thing to mother's milk. (Don't do the powdered goat milk as it tastes or smells nothing like fresh.) She did absolutely wonderful and had no problems with allergies, intollerances, constipation, colds or conjestion of any sorts. She is now 5 and drinks either rice milk or almond milk.

Hi M.,

I have started weaning my daughter from breastmilk to formula too. She is 8 mths. I started out by adding 1 oz of formula to a bottle of breastmilk. She is almost all formula now with only 1oz of breastmilk in her bottles. Of course you have to be in a position to pump to be able to have a stock of breast milk to pull from. Best of luck!

Hi M.,

I had to do the same thing with my daughter at the same age. I tried everything everyone told me (adding a little formula to the breast milk and slowly increasing but as it got closer to half and half she refused to drink it, and I tried letting someone else giver her a bottle of formula while I was out, but she would refuse to eat until I came home) and it didn't work. Ultimately I had to give her a bottle of formula myself and just not give her the breast. I couldn't do it one feeding at a time, as suggested, because she would hold out until the next feeding she knew would be nursed. So it was all at once for us. The first day she harldy ate anything, just tiny sipps from the bottle when she was ravenous, but she still had wet diapers. The next day she drank a tiny bit more, the next day a tiny bit more, so on and so forth until by the end of the week she was totally drinking all of her bottles. It was not easy, but it was necessary and no other method worked. They will drink it when they need to and know the other option is not available. Also, the least nasty tasting, least smelly, formula I could find was Enfamil Nutramigen. I got some samples from our pediatrician (just ask yours and they will have some, or they will ask their sales rep for some for you) to get started and then you can buy it at Walmart. Its a bit expensive but worth it. Once she was used to formula, I transitioned her to Parent's Choice Gentle. Good luck!
