My son, who is 5, has to wear white shirts to school. I work, so by the time I pick him up his lunch has set in. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the stains out? ESP - red sauce.....I spray them down as soon as we get home but that does not seem to be doing the trick.

So What Happened?

I bought a clorox pen and treated the stains and then washed it in a load with clorox added to the wash. All of the stains are gone. Thanks for all the suggestions. I am glad that I will not need to make a run to buy more shirts this early in the year.

Oxyclean! It has removed food stains that I thought would never come out. I routinely put a big scoop in my light colored loads and we rarely ever have food stains. If we do, a concentrated dose of Oxyclean on the stain usually does the trick. I buy the stuff at Costco in a big box, that's how much I love it.

Dirt, though, is another matter. Oxyclean works wonders on organic material, but it's not so great for mud, grease, etc.

I tried the clorox pen on my son's shirt, and it bleached the stained area fully white, but the rest of the shirt looks dingy compared to it. The shirt looks worse now!

I know there are wipes he can take with him, maybe put them in his luchbox and have him ask his teacher to wipe the food off if he can't do it himself.

Shout makes a set-in stain remover that works wonders! It's in a dark blue spary bottle. You spray it on and let it sit overnight. What I like is it says the longer it sits the better so if I don't get to the wash right away its not a big deal.

I suggest you put liquid tide on the stain and let soak over night then wash in hot water & bleach. The bleach pen works but can make holes in the shirt after awhile. I have removed blood stains that were in things for years with liquid tide. However I use tide powder w/ bleach for washing clothes and add clorox for whites.
Good luck

Clorox bleach pen!!!!! Let it soak for atleast an hour. I've also heard that lemon juice and sunlight is a great natural alternative. I haven't tried it, though. Good luck!!

Use a bleach pen on the stains as soon as he takes his shirt off. Then let it sit on the stains until you wash. Put a little bleach in the wash. It gets the map of his lunch out completely & dos not leave the rest of the shirt looking grey..

Goo Gone

Clorox pen

or wash in a load with Clorox -- you're lucky he wears white, as chlorine bleach sounds like your best friend in this situation

This may sound strange, but soak the shirts in "denture cleaner" overnight and then wash as usual. It works for set in stains sometimes as well. For tough stains, just make a paste out of the cleaning tablets and lightly brush it in. It's cheaper than all of those cleaners and I swear by it. I use it to clean garage sale items. Let me know if you try it.
