hi, R.!!!
I have a 15 mo daughter and she is lactose intolerant. I could breastfeed her for only 1month (we found out she was when she had 3weeks). She was taking the formula without lactose because she didn't want the soy milk. For sometime I tried giving her cheese sticks or yougurt, when she started with solids but she was constantly with a runny nose, rashes on her skin, diarrea, etc. So, since 8 months I took all dairy from her diet... It is hard (even snacks for her we have to read the labels) but she did not have any thing like those colic that she was having before.
By the way, we use regular milk with no lactose, soy yogurt, etc
I think it will be worth it if you try it!!
Good luck, and you can write me an email with you need any more help (I had the same problem being Brazilian in USA... And I'm also with no family here...)
Good luck

I don't' think lactose intolerance is something they can diagnose with a test. It's trial and error kind of thing. Our younger son is lactose intolerant. Unfortunately we didnt' figure it out until he was 1 and started transitioning to regular milk. He was on a dairy formula, and he never slept through the night the first year. When we transitioned to milk he had constant runny noses and his sleeping got worse. On a hunch we took him off dairy and put him on soy, and within a couple days he slept through the night for the first time. He wasn't sleeping because his tummy was uncomfortable. He's now 2-1/2 and if he eats any dairy, he will have a restless nights sleep. So we avoid it all together.

I would say switch to a soy formula or at least the lactose free formula and see what happens.

And from personal experience... your pediatrician is not the end all be all when it comes to diagnosis. We had a pediatrician mis-diagnose an issue with our older son that landed him in the hospital unnecessarily. He was pumped full of antiobiotics and had an IV -- the whole 9 yards -- and it was because our pediatrician didn't see something very obvious that didn't even require medical attention (long story otherwise I'd explain). So trust your mommy intuition over your pediatrician. They aren't gods and aren't always right!

Good luck!
B.

My daughter had similar issues and as soon as I switched her to a soy formula she was fine. To this day (she's eight years old) she drinks soy milk, though solid dairy foods (like cheese, yogurt) she's good with. It can't hurt to try. Good luck!

R.,

When I informed my son's pediatrician of his constant spitting up of breast milk, she told me it was gas and to watch my diet. She recommended staying away from the following: chocolate, coffee (even decaf), dark leafy greens, and other 'gasy' veggies like broccoli, etc.

And, if he ever gets it in a bottle and you can get it, you may want to try adding a small amount of baby rice cereal to it to settle his tummy.

I hope he gets better soon.

i just found out today that my 4 month old daughter is lactose intolerant.. we had to switch her to straight soy milk.. she is severly allergic to lactaid. And she got it from her daddy.... so i would try switching to soy.

Hi R.!

I went through the same thing with my now nine month old daughter. I was told she had acid reflux and so I gave her Axid for a month and it didn't help. I ignored my intuition for two months, when finally, I decided to switch her to Nutramigen formula and I could almost immediately see the difference. She would cry so hard and uncontrollably, that I would just break down and cry too. So after seeing the ped several times, seeing a gastroentronologist, and being told that I just had a 'difficult' baby, I followed my intuition and made the change. She is perfectly healthy and happy now. Good luck to you, things will get better soon. ps, i tried soy and it didn't work...
