My husband got a can of gas for his tractor and put the can in the back of my expedition- on the carpet. Now my truck reeks of gas. It is so bad I cannot drive it. How in the world am I going to get it out?
Try sprinkling baking/wash soda on it. Leave it on with the hatch open for several hours. If possible park so the sun shines on it. Then vacuum. Repeat if the odor has lessened.
I would not put water on it because of the chemical properties of water and gas. Can't explain them. This is just a sense I have from chemistry. Ask the high school chemistry teacher for ideas.
Dawn removes oil. It might work for gas. Both are a petroleum product.
before you do anything else dump a thick layer of cat litter on it. it will soak up the oil/grease and take the smell out. you may need to do it a couple times. can't guarentee that it won't leave a stain but that can be cleaned once the smell is gone. my husband did the same thing.
Try using a clay-based kitty litter. I know it works really well for oil, so I imagine it would help with gas too. Sprinkle some baking soda too. Let it sit for a few hours with all the doors open, then vacuum. (And empty/toss instead of letting it sit in your vacuum.)
Try vinegar and hot water to wash the spill then rinse with baking soda and hot water and let it dry (also air out the vehicle if you can).
Ditto all the other suggestions, and also park it out in the fresh air/sunshine with all the windows and the back lift gate open for as long as you can.
If you don't want to do it yourself, call dealership detail department or someone who "details" cars. They should know or take it to them, but will cost. Might be worth it, rather than breathe the fumes.
Those odors are soaking into the whole vehicle, seats, head-liner, everything, so even if you get it out of carpet, the car is still going to smell like gas.
Just like smoke, it permeates into all the fibers and materials.
Water it down and wet/dry vac it.
Repeat a few times.
It should be fine.
