Hey Guys,
Something has happened that is a first for me... I've got a call into by OB-Gyn, but I thought I'd ask here too since there's no telling how long it will take for them to call me back. I am on birth control, and at the end of my cycle never received my period. Is this normal? Has this happened to you guys? I'm 40 - could this be an early start to menopause (yikes!)
THANKS!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for you responses!! My Ob-gyn's nurse did return my call. I'm on Loestrin 24FE and she said it's very normal for me to miss a period. She said some women on this birth control method never have a period at all. Wow! There's no worry that I'm pregnant either... Last time I checked, you have to have sex for that! LOL! Everyone have a good day!

My mom started missing periods when she was still in her 30's. Birth control pills helped regulate them but they got more and more irradic as she got older. Now, at 52, she only has one about once a year. So basically she started having symptoms of menopause in her 30's. There are actually like 3 stages of menopause- pre-, peri-, and post-, I believe. When she started missing periods and finally went to the doc, he labeled her perimenopausal. She was also very hormonal, over-emotional prior to this, although she hadn't been on the pill until she was diagnosed with peri-. The doc but her on the pill to regulate the hormones. So you could very likely be showing signs on menopause, you should develop it close to the same age as your own mother. (I'm 31 now and holding my breath.) But you could be pregnant too. Even perimenopausal woman can become pregnant. My mother actually did but ended up having a miscarriage. I personally never missed a period when on the pill. In fact the only time I've missed or even been late were the 2 times I've been pregnant.

It depends on what pill you're on, but most result in skipped periods for me. The newer ones are designed to do that because the less you ovulate the less risk you have for developing ovarian cancer. I've missed EVERY period on Loestrin FE and only have one every couple of months on Yaz (tho I became allergic to it). Nuva Ring, if you're on that, threw me into menopause (at 25) - all told, I was on it for three months.

Hope that helps!

Regarding menopause ... do you know when your mother reached menopause? That is a good indicator of when you can expect to reach that milestone as well. (While the average is late 40's, many women do become menopausal in their early 40's and some not until they are into their 50's and still others may become menopausal in their 30's.) You should share that information with your doctor if he or she has not already asked you about your mother's menstrual history.

Other things to consider...
How long have you been on this particular method of birth control? If it is a pill (one of the older ones usually) and you have been on the same one for an extended period (three years or more) you may find your body no longer responds to it the same way and, if you are sexually active, you can get pregnant. Ask your doctor if that is the problem and whether you should consider changing to another form. If you are using hormone injections, patch, ring, or sub-dermals and have been using it for only a few months, this may be an adjustment to the new birth control. The ring and sub-dermals do tend to make you skip periods and some women have a hard time getting back when they go off and attempt to start (or add to) their family. Only your doctor can say for sure which one of these possiblities is the one you are dealing with.

Well, it really depends on how long u have been on birthcontrol. When i took birth control pills i had a similar side effect. but if u have been taking them for a while and this is just now happening it might be cause for concern. i had a hysterectomy last year. so its kinda hard for me to remember what it was like to have those problems.

If it were me I would have to get a pregnancy test, if not pregnant, I wouldn't worry to much, but if it will calm your nerves, call the obgyn

Have you missed any pills?... sometimes that happens.
I guess it could be menapause but I am 47 and no where near menapause. I even had a baby at 45 yrs old.
I would have it checked out if you haven't missed any pills.

Go get a complete physical. Rule out pregnancy first. There are other medical reasons why you could miss your period. I missed periods when I did not have enough thyroid hormone in my system and I needed to be put on thyroid medication.
