I had my daughter almost six months ago, and I know from my previous pregnancy that after I had my son, some of my hair started to fall out, but that stopped after about 4 months, and there wasn't that much that fell out. Now, however, after my daughter was born, my hair is still falling out, and it's not just a little. Everytime I shower enough hair comes out to completely clog the drain and usually even more comes out while I'm brushing. So is this normal or should I talk to my doctor about it? Or maybe it's the shampoo that I'm using? Any help would be greatly appriciated!
Mine fell out for almost 18 months afterwards! It was everywhere!!!!! The sinks were always clogged and my oldest would say, " There's a mommy hair again!". luckily I had a lot of hair, so I didn't mind losing some...I just wish it would have fallen out all at the same time where I could have neatly disposed of it (haha).

I too have a 6 month old daughter. My hair started to fall out one month ago by the handful. I have to empty the shower drain after every shower. I was told by other mothers that this is normal and continue up to a year after giving birth. The only thing that I do is brush my hair before the I shower so I don't clog up the drain too much.

Hi E.!! I'm new here, but thought I would respond to your post. My youngest are 4 and 1/2 year old twins and my hair is STILL falling out like yours. You'd think I would be bald by now, but it is still thick. Do you wear your hair in a pony tail a lot?? I do... I was told that you lose around 100 hairs a day normally and I think that since it is pulled back most of the time, the normal fall out occurs in the shower or while I'm brushing my hair. I wouldn't worry about it.

I had a problem with my hair getting very thin and it was brittle and lifeless. I went to GNC and bought a bottle of ULTRA NOURISH HAIR - and my hair has thickened up dramatically! My hair has also gotten stronger and it is shiny and healthy. My nails have also gotten stronger and longer.
This is something that you may want to try. They are about $14 per bottle.

I just wanted to drop a note to tell you my own story on this. Maybe it can help you. I started losing my hair about 4 years ago. It wasn't because I had just had a baby, but it was around the time that my son was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. I thought at first that it was just stress because we were going through some really, really tough times. But when it KEPT falling out, I finally went to the dermatologist (I have rosacia also, so I see him for that). They took a couple of strands of my hair to look at the roots and I was told I had alopecia areata. There are 3 types of alopecia (areata, totalis and one more I can't remember). They don't know what causes it, they speculate that in my case it was indeed stress. But people who lose less than 50 percent of their hair are classified alopecia areata, more than 50 percent is the one I can't remember, and people who lose all body hair over their entire body (including eye lashes, eye brows, EVERYTHING) are classified as alopecia totalis. Now the 1st two will grow their hair back after a time but people with totalis usually won't. It sounds like you maybe would fit into one of the 1st categories if you have alopecia, since your hair grew back once. I lost alot of hair and wore a wig for about a year. It actually ended up fun because people would compliment me all the time about my hair and the color of it, etc. You can change anytime you felt like something new! Anyway, after that year, my hair grew back. I went for like 2 years and then I started to notice that it was falling out again. It didn't happen quite as bad this time, I didn't resort to a wig, I just have a very creative hairdresser :) What the doctor told me is that it can just happen out of the blue with no reason and it will grow back and can happen again at any time. You can google alopecia and there are TONS of support websites out there. I was amazed at how many there are. Also there are things that the doctors will try to help stimulate hair growth. I tried the cortizone shots (yes shots in my scalp) but I don't think they did any good. Basically, what happens is the body's immune system attacks the hair folicles and kills them. No hair can grow where the folicle is damage. Then once the body rights itself the folicles recover and hair can grow back. It's all very complicated to me...anyway, if you need anything at all, don't hesitate to shot me an email or something! Just know that even if it's something like this, it's not the end of the world. It sure felt like it to me, I was so upset, and I'm a bit of a vain person. I like to look nice & I felt like I didn't but my husband was very supportive and would constantly tell me I was beautiful no matter what! So with a good support network, you can make it through!

It is normal to start losing hair between three and six months after childbirth(usually closest to three). It can continue for three to six months. You will then see short hairs coming in,especially at temple area. Just eat a healthy diet and stay on your prenatal vitamins.

Don't worry! The same thing happened to me when my son was about 6 months old. I went to my doctor because it had gotten REALLY bad. After he check my thyroid, he said to basically wait it out and it should stop in a month or two. He was right! A couple of weeks after my appointment it slowed down, then completely stopped witin 2 months, I honestly think stressing about it make it worse. About a month after that I started to notice regrowth! So, don't worry, you'll be absolutely fine and it will all grow back very, very soon.

I've had 3 children and I seem to lose more hair with each one. But, they say that is normal. My youngest is almost 4 and I am still losing it. They say its normal to lose 100 strands a day. There are products you can get on to help with hair loss. I have been on a great one with the company I work with,Arbonne . I can send you before and after pics if you send me your email address.

Hi E.,
I know how frustrating it is to be having hair loss. I remember also losing a little bit of hair after I had my second son 14 years ago. However this seems to be a bit more serious. Hair loss can be due to one of many things. Diet, stress, birth control. I also suspect that your iron levels may be to low. There is a blood test that can determine this. I suggest that you see you PCP and get a referrel to a dermatologist soon. I put my girlfriend in touch with mine here on post. She is going through the same thing, but her kids are older so it's not due to recent childbirth. He read her previous lab results and did find that her iron levels were to low and that they should be in a certain range to be producing a certain something(can't remember the word). I will have to ask her and get back with you. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.
Sincerely,
S. England

Most women lose some hair two or three months after having a baby because hormonal changes prevent normal hair loss during pregnancy.
Some good nutrient supplements to consider are: essential fatty acids including flaxseed oil, primrose oil, and salmon oil, B complex, vitamins C & E and Zinc. Coenzyme Q10 and Kelp are also very helpful. Eat a diet high in fruits and vegatables and low in starch. This may help to slow down the process of hair loss. They contain flavanoids, many of which are antioxidants that may provide protection for the hair follicles and encourage hair growth. Avoid using products that are not natural on your hair - go for pH balanced formulas. Normal hair loss is 50 to 100 hairs per day. If hair loss is continuing past two to three months after giving birth, you might consider a metal detox, high levels of metal toxicity can cause extended, sometimes complete hair loss.
Hope this helps.

Hi E., I have 3 kids and it took about a year with each to stop the hair loss. It does feel like so much is coming out when washing it, but I talked to the girl who cuts my hair and she said it is completely normal. Now if youre getting bald spots I would be concerned, but I had a lot of hair come out and you couldnt tell. With each kid I thought it would never end, but it does eventually. Dont worry, youre not going to lose all your hair!!

Hi E.!! My name is M.. I am not saying you have this but, I had something called Alopecia Areota (spelling?). I lost a lot of my hair. I had 16 bald spots at one time. It is caused by stress and there is nothing they can do about it. They have a sulfur drug you could take but, it only works on 25% of the population. I did not take it, I just lowered my stress level. This happened to me in 2003. My hair grew back in and I just got one new bald spot about 8 months ago. I was getting remarried and I was really stressed. I am a 37 year old mother of a 15 yr. old and a 11 yr. old. Good luck and ask your doctor about this. Take care!! M. I.

Are you seeing any bald spots in your hair or is it falling out evenly? You are supposed to lose about 50 to 75 hairs a day, would you say it is more than that? Also, are you dieting? If you are, make sure that you are getting enough fat in your diet. You don't need to over do it but your body still needs some fat to be healthy. Are you taking your vitamins. Hair is dead keritin cells, so are your nails and dead cells of the skin, what are your nails and your skin doing and what do they look like? Do your finger tips look bluish at all and if you mash on them they look a little white, how long does it take to get the color to come back to them? And does your hair seem to be getting thinner or is it about the same? Sometimes your hair thickens up when pregnant and then it will automatically lose enough hair to put you back to where you were and it can take anywhere from 1 month to a yr to get it back to where it was.
All of that kind of goes together.

It is normal after pregnancy for your hair to fall out but if you feel it's too much then ask about it. It couldn't hurt to ask. I would have my thyroid checked. If it's not right hair loss can be a result. I went to the dr. whining(at least that's how I felt)& all my complaints were from my inactive thyroid. I started on medicine & it really helped. Hope that helps.

Probably normal, but check w/your doc.
When pregnant, your hair doesn't fall out on normal schedule, so after you give birth, it's like all of that hair that *should* have fallen out for the previous 9 months decide that they have to make up for lost time. It may be different having been pregnant w/a girl because of the extra estrogen of the pregnancy? or at least not as much testosterone in your body bc of the boy.

Do you have any other physical symptoms? Do you have any stomach issues or diarrhea? The reason I'm asking is that my 18yodd use to have that very problem, not pregnancy related though. After a shower I swear it looked like a gorilla had showered in there, she had literally stuck her hair to the walls of the shower stall to prevent it from clogging up the drain. Turns out she has celiac disease and her malnutrition was contributing to her hair loss.
Now to look at her you wouldn't classify her as malnourished, 5'7", skinny, but she was never classified as failure to thrive as a child so it was surprising to us. But after going on the gluten free diet she put on 15#'s which looked great on her, but her hair loss stopped within 3 months. Her color is wonderful, her hair looks great, she feels like a new person.
Now you can have this disease without those symptoms, just stomach issues & diarrhea are the most common. You can go to http://www.csaceliacs.org/ and get some great information.
I hope you find an answer because I know that it can be a little unsettling to have this happening to you.

The same thing happen to me after I had my son! Actually my son is 4 now, and my hair has never been the same! You're most likely going through normal shedding after childbirth! After birth your body is trying to get back to it's normal state, because your newborn consumes a lot of your body nutrients/vitamins! Continue to take your prenatal vitamins, I'm sure it's normal. If it's starts to get worse or even more bothersome, then i would consult a doctor! Good Luck and Congrats!

I think it's normal, and can vary from one post pregnancy to the next (even for the same Mom)! ;) But, it can't hurt to mention it to your doctor and tell him/her if you're having any other symptoms that might be a concern. I think the hair loss after having a baby is related to hormones, and I noticed my hormones were way crazier when I was pregnant with my girl than with my boy! ;)

I know from experience that some hair loss is normal. When you're pregnant, the new hormones in your body discourage your hair from falling out. After you give birth, and the hormones start to decrease, it seems like you're experiencing a huge hair loss, while it's really only the old hair that would normally fall out, coming out all at once. However, in your case, since the hair loss is prolonged, I would recommend asking your doctor about it. You may have a hormonal imbalance. Hope that helps! C.

I think this is completely normal. I have a baby girl that is 4 months old and my hair is also falling out at an unbelievable rate. It is driving me crazy because it is everywhere---on clothes, on the floor, in the drain, etc. It happened this way after my first pregnancy as well. I think that it has to do with hormones. Don't panic because it will pass soon.
