Hi all!

My son is now 13 months old. He has been waking up SCREAMING in the middle of the night at least 4 times. He calms quickly after we pick him up (litterally less than a minute) and then pushes off of us and wants to go back to his crib and goes back to sleep no problem...until the next time he wakes up. He's done this the past few nights until about midnight and then he's fine until 6-6:30am. He is currently cutting 4 teeth but that isn't the issue in the middle of the night...he isn't showing any signs of pain when he wakes up. Anyone know anything about night terrors? That's the only think I could come up with. Any help or possible answers would be SOOOOOOO helpful!

thanks so much!

What can I do next?

L., I do remember when my oldest who is now 11 doing the same thing. I asked the doctor and he told me night terrors. The good thing is they do stop. It was on and off for about 3 months. Then onto the next challenge. Good Luck!

hi L.,
my daughter is 13,5 months old, she's been doing all-of -the sudden screaming for few months without any signs of teeth at all. i don't know what it is either, maybe teeth , maybe night terrors( which i heard are more common towards 2nd yr)also could be separation anxiety (baby feels that he's alone, just wants to be reassured you're near by) my daughter does this screaming most of the time in the 1st 2-3 hrs after i put her to bed. i don't think you gonna know for sure, only he knows, but could be any of these reasons or more. just wanted to let you know you're not alone. my ped told me it would pass eventually like everything else with babies.

Sometimes when children cry at night they have ear infections. My son just had one in each ear without any clear cut signs. It was a little scary when I took him to the doctor for something else to then find out that he had ear infections. I would definately make sure that that is not the case first.
My son also when through the same type of stage. We never really figured out that there was anything wrong. The doctor said that it was night terrors and soon he stopped waking up in the middle of the night. Good luck!

We had the same issue with my daughter from 5 mos. to 1 year. Little did we know, she was suffering from a double ear infection and there were no signs to make us think it was that, until we couldn't take it anymore and brought her into the dr. We decided to go the Chiropractor route instead of tubes, and she became a different child. I wouldn't rule it out. Take him in to get checked.

My daughter will be 3yrs next month. She was waking up crying like some one was hurting her. I have started leaving a 15watt light bulb on, she has not woken up crying since then. She will still wake up but does not cry.

Sounds like he just needs the reassurance that you guys are there for him. Just keep doing it.

Maybe there is some discomfort in his ears or gums from the teeth though.

Hi L.~

I can say from too much experience that your little one probably isn't having night terrors. You say that he calms when he is picked up. That means he is awake (somewhat) and aware of you/your husband. When a baby/child is having night terrors, they are unaware of what is going on, what they are doing, is actually still asleep (even if their eyes are opened), usually thrashing around, and is unconsolable when picked up. Actually, you can startle/scare them if you move them and cause them to wake and then you have another issue by waking a 'sleeping' child in the middle of the night.
Hopefully, he is just teething and his waking issues will subside after his new teeth are in. Good Luck with your little guy!!

Hi L...
This same situation just happen to us last week. My daughter, who is 2, appeared to be teething (2 year molars) for about a week and she kept waking up 4-5 times a night crying and screaming sometimes. Sometimes she would fall right back to sleep and other times we would have to sooth her. I didn't think much of it because she has always been a so-so sleeper. Anyways, then one morning she woke up with what looked like pink eye. We took her into the MD and she indeed had the pink eye (in both eyes) and a double ear infection... no symptoms!! So maybe you should get him checked.. Sometimes with the teething comes extra fluid which just sits in the ears and end up becoming infected!! Hope this helps!

Hi L.,

My 5 1/2 year just stopped having night terrors. And the sad thing about it is there is nothing you can really do about it if that is the problem. It is horrible because the rest of the family would be woken up but her. I think if it is night terrors he would not be waking up. We tried to wake my daughter even though they told us not to. But we where so tired. We went away once and they where so bad we had people knocking on the door to make sure everything was alright. I would check with the doctor and see what they think. If they are they could just go away or like my daughter get worse. She would talk in her sleep and say horrible things and she would open her eyes sometimes but she was still asleep. And when she was this way we did ever thing to try to wake her and we couldn't.

Good luck.
H.
