Hey Moms!
My 5th grader was nominated and accepted to a fantastic program called People to People World Leadership Forum. Only 5 students from any school can be nominated, and even fewer are accepted to the program. Emma was accepted and we're very excited! The Forum consists of a full week in Washington D.C. where the students do so many thing from meeting the Supreme Court to visiting sites such as the United States Holocaust Museum and the Jamestown Settlement. The students who attend are from all aroung the world! She will even get high school credits! The problem comes with the steep price tag! Tuition and airfare come to $2800 - yikes! Because this is a leadership program, Emma knows she is expected to fundraise and contribute. Does anyone have any ideas on what she can do?! She will have a table at Homewood Days in July and will be selling handmade jewelry and dresses. What else can she make to sell? We really want to impress on her the importance of EARNING the funds - not just asking for handouts! Any and all ideas are welcome and appreciated! Thanks Moms!

Our grass (back) and unfortunately the dog poop needs to get picked up, but is Uncle Chris willing to pay for those services, I DON'T know?? I'll get back to you on that!! Good for her! You go, Emma! Take care, Beth

I am a Tastefully Simple consultant, and we offer fundraisers. I don't know if you are aware of Tastefully Simple, but it's delicious gourmet food that can be made with 1-3 ingredients. It's easy to sell because it's food and people love it. She can put samples of the food out on her table and take orders. I am not sure off=hand how the breakdown is on how much money she makes, but I can get you more information if you are interested. You can e-mail me at ____@____.com luck!

congrats to you and your daughter. i was thinking that she could line up some friends and do this project in one night. have you seen the no sew blankets? you just need to buy fleece and scissors. anyone can do this and if you purchase some cut fabrics they could be a hit at the homewood days or anywhere else they will allow her to sell them. google no sew blankets or michaels web site had instructions on it awhile back. good luck!

When I was a girl scout leader we did a car wash. It was a lot of work, but if you get a nice day you can make upwards of $500. She would need to recruit help from freinds and family members. We would have about 10 people. We also would get donations for the materials from Turtle Wax, and the school donated the parking lot and the water. Set up fliers ahead of time and go around and sell "prepaid card wash coupons" this way more people will know when it is, and most of the people who purchased the prepaid carwash didn't show up. Good luck!!

Hello A.,

This program is worth every dollar, consider it an investment. My son attended People to People 2 years ago and has been invited to attend other conferences such as this one, he was the first person from his school to attend. This really changed his life and helped him to be more outspoken.

We had almost one year to raise the funds for this trip. We sold 'Worlds Finest' candy at his school as well as on my job, and we received pledge donations from many sources. I contacted his school principal and the school board was able to make a donation (if I'm not mistaken, they had a special budget for children activites). Also contact your alderman to see what ideas they can offer.

I'm not sure of you plan to go with her but if it helps, I used southwest airlines to fly there, which was cheaper then the airlines they suggested. I made it into a semi family vacation with my younger son. We stayed at a nearby hotel in Maryland and had activities lined up each day. You wont find out the exact hotel until 30-45 days before departure (they dont want the parents trying to stay at the same hotel) and the hotel was not in D.C., it was in a near-by town. I am so excited for your daughter. If you have any questions what so ever, please contact me at ____@____.com. I will try my hardest to support your families fundraising efforts. Let me know the exact date you will be at Homewood Days Inn. It is so important to encourage our children to do great things such as this. I have pictures from the event along with other details if you would like to get more familiar with what she will be doing. Chat with you later.

Ms. S.

Hello, congrats for your daughter! When I was a senior I won a trip to California with three other students, to compete in a national competition. We had to raise funds for the trip too, so we did two different things:

1.) We asked businesses to donate items that we could raffle off (Movie tickets, car wash tokens, gift certificates, etc.) we raised a lot of money with this but it's a lot of work.

2.) We wrote letters to different businesses and asked if they could sponsor us ~ which they did~ the businesses pertained to what we were competing in.

Some other ideas are:
1.) to host a dance (Ask a banquet hall to donate a Friday night (Not as busy on a Friday Night), d.j. also
2.) have a roller skating fundraising party
3.) The Gary Railcats offer fundraiser nights too

I hope this is helpful!

I am a Shaklee distributor, and one of the things they do is allow non-profit organizations to set up a "business" to sell products as a fundraiser which could actually go year round. The school (your daughter) could set up a website, bring flyers to the table and order forms. The main things schools promote are the nontoxic green cleaners called Get Clean (you may have seen us on Oprah). Schools are going green anyway, and so are many parents nowadays. So parents or people from the community could buy from the school year round which is a huge benefit to the school. One thing I can tell you is that a lot of people are trying these products now anyway because we are learning that it's not just about going green - there are a lot of health risks with using leading brands as well. If you'd like more info., let me know and I can get information to you. In the meantime, you can check out my website but keep in mind that the cleaning products are super concentrated. By buying a concentrate, it saves you a lot of money and keeps a ton of packaging waste out of landfills. Let me know what you think :)

Hi--Congratulations to Emma! You should check with the park district in your area. Our P.D. has a "garage sale" for kids. They can sell their old toys or books at this sale. It is only for the kids and the kids make pretty good money selling their items. It is a lot of fun too. Good luck!

I just received my park districts new book and they will be holding a spring outdoor flea market on Saturday, May 17th from 9am until 1:00pm. The space will cost $10.00 for 2 parking spots--one for your car and the other for your tables. If you are interested you can call and have them fax you over a form. The phone number is ###-###-####. It is the Palos Hills Community Activity Center located at 8455 W. 103rd Street. Hope this info helps!
