Help to Make Her Feel Comfortable!

My daughter who is 3 and a half months old has been sleeping in her own crib since she was a month old, problem is, she is sleeping in her carrier because she has been sick with a cold. As the coughing is getting better, I need to transition her to the crib without having her in the carrier because for the last few mornings she had wiggled her way out of the carrier so she was sleeping peacefully with the bottom half of her little body on the mattress and the her head in the bottom of the seat! She likes to be cuddled when she sleeps, up until about two weeks ago she preferred to be swaddled when sleeping. I have snapped her in the carrier, but that always wakes her up when I put her down for the night and then I have to pick her up to soothe her back to sleep. She is sleeping from about 8 pm until 5 am but when I tried laying her in her crib without the carrier she was up within an hour and anywhere from every thirty minutes to two hours after that. If she hadn't been sleeping through the majority of the night I wouldn't be worried, but she doesn't seem to be getting any sleep when just placed in her crib.

So, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to make her feel more comfortable when put in her crib. I have a sleep positioner that raises her slightly up and has foam wedges on the side to keep her on her back, but she wiggles her way out of it (she is a wiggly sleeper) and I was worried that she may flip over and suffocate on the soft foam.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

Do you have a swing? My dd had RSV when she was 4 months old and it took us 2 months to get her completely over it. Until then, every time we laid her on her back she couldn't breathe well. We ended up letting her sleep in her swing for almost the entire time. I asked her doctor if there was any problem with it and he said no, if it helps her feel comfortable, do it. You still have to snap her in, but it's not as difficult as the carrier is and I found that if she did wake up I would just start the swing and put the timer on for 15 minutes and she would drift right back off to sleep.

The only other thing I can think of to try is to put a t-shirt in the crib with her that you have been wearing or something else with your scent on it. I did this with my daughter as well and it seemed to comfort her greatly.

Good Luck!!

HI! First off, how long has she had a cold? If your baby has reflux, one symptom of that is that they wheeze and it sounds like a cold but it really isnt. Also, if she's having trouble sleeping flat on her back, that could be another sign. Reflux happens when the contents of the stomach wash back into the esophagus. Their little baby tummies aren't all the way mature yet and the little flap at the bottom of the esophagus that leads into the tummy doesn't close all the way and that's why putting them on their backs to sleep can sometimes irritate this problem. HEre are a few suggestions:
1. Lay her on her left side with a positioner.
2. Use a boppy to support her body while sleeping.
3. Use a crib wedge to lift one side of the mattress.
4. Use large wood blocks (not kids' toy blocks) to raise the legs on one side of the crib.
5. talk to your doctor about reflux and what the signs are. You may need to consult a pediatric gastroenterologist.
REflux is really common and not a big deal. Most kids grow out of it by 6 or 9 months. But at the time it is so hard to see them hurting. Good luck with everything!

It looks like you have received some good advice. The only thing that I am concerned with, and maybe I read it wrong, is that you are putting the infant carrier in her crib for her to sleep in. If the carrier were to flip over, you will have a much bigger suffocation problem than with the wedges. The sleep positioners are created with baby in mind. You need to be laying the carrier on a hard surface like the floor, not a soft surface like a mattress. This could be very dangerous for baby.
As for the transition, sometimes these things just take time. We tend to rush our kids (I am to blame for this also). It is stressful when your not getting sleep. Usually they will transition themselves, we just don't want to have to wait that long. (I speak from experience.)
Good Luck!
