L., I can sympathize. I was there once - I went to Consumer Credit Counseling to see if they could help me out, and they were not very helpful! They had me write out a budget, and when the counselor saw that my outgo was more than my income, she just looked at me and said, "What are you going to do?" Well isn't that what she was for?!! Needless to say, I did not sign on with them. Since then I have also learned that if you use one of these agencies, and you ever apply for a loan ever again, you will be treated as if you have filed bankruptcy - this will affect your terms and interest rates. Shortly after that I found a book called "The Total Money Makeover." I can't say enough about this book - it is written by a financial advisor named Dave Ramsey - he has a daily radio show that can be listened to and downloaded online (daveramsey.com). The book is very simple - it's common sense money advice and it has tools and plans to help you get yourself out of debt. He has budgets, ways to deal with creditors, all kinds of good money tools. He is also very motivational and no nonsense. I tried all kinds of things when I was in debt - nothing worked until I found this book. It has been a lifesaver for me and my husband!!! The book can be found in major bookstores and libraries, it runs around $20 to $25 - if you are in the St. Louis area (I live in Oakville) and don't want to spend the money at this point in time I would be happy to lend you my copy. Feel free to contact me - good luck! ~E.
