My niece is constipated. She won't drink much water, she prefers milk. Any tips on what I could give her? I don't care for drugs, so anything natural.
Thanks in advance.

Pear juice is what my doctor recommended and it worked wonders with my daughter, although she was a bit younger. Good Luck!

Both prunes and pears worked well for my little guy. I stewed prunes, blended them in a food processor and froze them in ice cube trays. I also did the same with pears after peeling and coring them, added some cinnamon. . . .A friend of mine went 'old school' and added karo syrup to juice which worked well, too. good luck!

My children all seem to be helped with full strength apple juice or watered down prune juice but I have heard that Apicot works even quicker. I have never used Apricot but it does sound easier than prune.

Good Luck!

Milk of Magnesia or MOM is pretty much just magnesium. It works like a charm. Just a teaspoon or so and you should see results right away. Nipping this in the bud as soon as possible will get her back on track. If she stays constipated longer than a couple of days it is just going to get tougher on her and her colon will take longer to heal and it becomes a battle. The colon will be stretched and won't give the signals to have a bowel movement which leads to more constipation. If she won't drink water, perhaps she will drink water mixed with a little prune juice or apple juice. Give her a fiber supplement or Fiber One cereal. The fiber will help hold onto some of that water and bulk up her bowel movement so that it isn't hard. Prunes are good too. Good luck.

My daughter has always had this problem so the doctor suggested additional fruit and juice to her daily diet and this has helped her.

hello that is never a fun issue but i've heard you can do warm apple cider in small amounts like 2-3 ounces a few tiems a day and it's suppsoe to help.

also they say a little bit of karo suryup in a drink that she likes- usually used in cooking...

then thier is always prune juice if you could get her to drink it- ick...

My son had awful, painful constipation at that age. We often had to try a combination of Gerber pureed prunes and pears (he didn't like prunes alone) and inserting a glycerin suppository to soften his stool. You can buy them at CVS/Walgreens in sizes made especially for babies and toddlers.

does she drink juice?, prune or apple sometimes will help, although i would water it down some. Fruits like peaches, apples, bananas, blueberries work really well too. Also prunes are really good. My son went through a bad constipation stage for awhile, and I would load him up on fruit, and juice, as well as whole grain foods..

I would not use applesauce - it's part of the "brat" diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) that helps with diarrhea. So it WON'T help constipation. Apple juice loosens the stool but it really doesn't have any nutrition, so I don't believe in pushing it. Dairy can be a problem too. You can try more fruits and vegetables, foods that have water in them.

Reliv's children's product gives kids fantastic nutrition in a highly absorbable form with absolutely no drugs and not even any warning labels like kids' vitamins and even kids' meds. Because it's so highly absorbed, you absolutely get your money's worth - not like pills which are only absorbed about 25% or so and the rest wasted. Plus it's balanced. Absolutely safe even for infants and pregnant moms. That will give her the fiber she needs for more regular bowel movements. This makes it easier for kids to eat other foods without problems. Reliv also makes a kids' hydrator product in 3 flavors that helps get water into kids - and again, it's highly absorbable. The combination should help her be more regular with bowel movements. Also, if she's constipated, she probably isn't interested in eating much of anything, and that's complicating the problem.

It's hard to get kids to drink plain water but I wouldn't substitute milk or apple juice. If she'll drink prune juice with other things, that's good. Dried fruits are missing the water, so that can complicate her problem too. I'd stick with natural fruits except for bananas until the problem is resolved. Also add as much whole grain to her diet as possible - switch off of white flour and white pasta.

Good luck!

Prunes, oranges (or any fruit with high vitamin C levels, such as canteloup) help each time (fruit, fruit & more fruit!!). Also, a friend gave her son flaxseed daily in his yogurt and constipation is a thing of the past.

Let her have some pumpkin pie or just pumpkin pie filling, I know it sounds crazy but it seems to work well for us. I was actually told this years ago by our vet. She was into the all natural healing and my dog was having issues and oh my did it work. I figured it couldn't hurt to try it with my son when he was constipated. My sister also tried it with her children and it help a lot. Think about it, it tastes good so no problem getting it in them and it has plenty of fiber. Or something else I tried which works is buy the sun sweet prunes that are individually wrapped. My son sees me open the tiny packaging and thinks it candy, it helps that I make a big deal about it tasting sooo yummy. We sometimes do a tea party and use water to get my son to drink more. He also likes to get his own water out of our water cooler and he is two also. Hope this gives you some ideas.

Hi C.,
Sprinkle some 'Core Greens', all natural 'grasses'.... honestly I swear by it and know a Mom of little kids who sprinkles it in their fruit smoothies. Don't need much. Contact Dorothy Torrey in Sandwich.###-###-#### who sells it. One jar will last for ever and its around $45 I think. Good for you too. Great if you don't eat enough salads and greens. Its from the PH Balance diet book. It all makes sense. Hope it helps.

I have found ( seven children, fourteen grandchildren, one and a third greatgrandchildren) that a good, whole milk, live culture natural yogurt goes a llloooonnnggg way to eliminating the constipation problems. Stoneybrook Farms is a good yogurt. Dont forget to stir in the topmilk part .
I think plain is best , perhaps mixed with a bit of natural applesauce or someother fruit....peaches, mashed blueberries, dash of cinnamon is good.
Can blender mix it with bit of juice and the fruit.
Best wishes and God bless

Water her milk or juice down, give her water at meals.... give her dried fruit(prunes are historically the best, but all dried fruit works) and add probiotics to her milk or yogurt (use any of the baby powdered probiotics or open a capsule intended for adults and mix it in daily). Offer her water at other times, keep a water bottle with you and keep milk for meals only.
At bedtime, rub her belly gently in a counterclockwise motion starting from above her right hip(that is the direction the colon naturally takes) to induce movement in there. Make little rubbing circles all the way around the perimeter of her belly. She may say it tickles. do this several times each day.

Try to give her about 4- 6 oz of PlumSmart with fiber juice. I dilute my daughter's with water. Also, try to see if she'll eat a few bite size prunes. Stop feeding her banana and cheeses, until she gets regular. Make sure she gets in her veggies and fruits. Flavor her water with juice. She needs clear fluids. Milk can be very constipating, esp whole milk.
Good luck.

try pure apple juice. My kids -- aged 2 and 3--- both have needed one cup of apple juice per day for as long as they have been eating solids. It keeps them regular. If their stools get harder they get more juice if they get loose they get less. It works for us. :)

Hi C.,
Fish Oils are a great way to go naturally. Find a yummy one at the local health food store. Sometimes they come in strawberry and cool flavors like that! I would also push the water...there's nothing better for your body! If you get some yummy fish oils for her, you could make it a game: drink the glass of water and get the yummy strawberry candies!

Not sure what others have said but we have found probiotics very helpful! They sell children's brands at Whole Foods and health food stores.
