My 7 week old is very constipated. He screams and his face turns beet red when he tries to go to the bathroom. This has been going on for a few weeks now. He went 2 days without going and then it was the most disgusting diaper I have ever seen. Now he's right back to not going. His doctor told me to try pear juice and to change his formula to Gentleease. I even went as far as a rectal thermometor and a supotitory. I just feel so helpless and it breaks my heart to see him so uncomfortable. Any ideas?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the info. THe suspository helped, except he had one really disgusting diaper, then he went like 6 times in 2 hours. I guess he was really backed up. He is however still straining, I feel terrible for him. I was going to try prune juice, but the doctor pear juice is the best and my husband doesnt believe in mother's instinct (which irritates me) so he listen to everything the doctor says...should I try it anyway???

My son had the same problem at around the same age as yours. Try the prune juice. I kept him on it for about two months and he has not problems now.

I remember all the trouble with my little one being constipated. I did the same things as you rectal thermometer, etc. I finally took her off of the regular formula and put her on soy. That did the trick.

When she went to regular milk, she again had the same problem with constipation - we switched to 1% which made it much better. Now that she is off of bottles - she is much more regular.

Also, when she was on regular milk - I don't recall her age, the doctor told me to give her Kondrumel. You ask for it at the pharmacy. It's a white liquid that you can put right in the bottle. We would use that when I started seeing the consistency change. Ask your doctor though b/c I don't remember how old she was when we used it.

Good luck!

PS I just moved from Yardville to Bordentown! I loved it there.

Hi. Both of my babies had the same problem until they were about 4 or 5 months old. My doctor told me to give them apple-prune juice every day. If that doesn't work, try prune juice alone. Of course, use the baby juices. Give the baby only an ounce at first. If that doesn't work, try 2 ounces once a day. My babies needed 2 ounces once a day. Then after a week or so, I was able to reduce it down to 2 ounces of Gerber Prune juice every other day. Their poop may be pretty mushy or runny at first, but it should thicken up and give them a lot of ease in a little while. I know what you mean about the baby turning red, screaming and crying. It's heart-breaking and you feel helpless. Try the prune juice. Good luck. :)

I went through the SAME thing with my son. Try incorporating water into his diet. Maybe even a little very little Oatmeal Cereal just a tad. Or cook some oatmeal and put the real oatmeal juice in his bottle. I tried the suppository I tried pretty much everything. And not much helped. My son is now about 16 months and he is having bowel movements about 2 times or more a day. And prior to that he would only have one every few days. You can also try a lower Iron Formula. It's a bit late this morning got up with my son and decided to check my email. So, when I am awake tomorrow I will try to email you and help you further
