Help with Fleas in House

I was doing a "friend" a favor and watched 4 kittens for 1 week while she was out of town. The night they arrived I noticed that they were crawling with fleas. I went online and found out how to treat little kittens, I was rather upset that she would drop off in my house in this condition and I have a cat of my own who did not have fleas. Well needless to say I thought that I had gotten rid of them until recently when I killed 3 in the house. I have carpeting in most of the house and I vaccuum all the time but I think that they are still in the house because I found one on my son tonight. How do I get rid of these things. I am afraid that if I bomb the house it will leave residue all over everything and then I will have to wash all the bedding and cupboards, etc. and really who has time for all that? Is there a way to do it safely, the cat we have is an indoor only cat and I need something safe for her too. I will take the children and leave for awhile if I have to do a "bomb". Please help. Lesson learned though about taking care of kittens before they are screened for fleas first.

THanks in advance for any advice, it will be greatly appreciated.

Hi D.,
I can remember my grandparents doing the desk lamp over a shallow metal pan with water and dishsoap in it. It really collects a lot of fleas. Sounds like other people have good luck with Borax. Maybe a combination of things will do the trick.
Good Luck.

We had a similar problem. We ended up having to bomb the house. We tried every alternative that the web provided and nothing worked. The vet had told me that by vacuuming I was making the problem worse. If the fleas laid eggs and they are in your carpet the vibration disturbes the eggs and they hatch. They also make a spray that worked for us. I don't remember the name of it but we bought it at petsmart. If you don't have a total infestation of fleas then I would recommend the spray. Unlike with bombing you don't have to leave your home or block it off. We used the spray in our bedroom and never had fleas again. Also after bombing we never had them again. But treat your cat too just in case. You can't do one without the other. It's a little pricey but get the frontline from your vet. It works great. You can actually see the fleas falling off.
I hope that this helps. Good Luck!

Things I've done before that have worked:

Purchase some flea collars and cut them up. Place them in your vacuum cleaner canister or bag. When fleas get sucked up, they die because of the collar's chemicals.

Purchase flea powder, sprinkle it on your carpet like carpet fresh. Let stand for about 10 mins, vacuum as usual.

And, lastly, for our cats, we use Hartz Flea and Tick, which we get for about $5 at Wal-Mart. That works well, but for our outdoor cat, we have to apply more than once a month...

Good luck!

D.,
My vet told me to go get Boraxo and sprinkle it all over your carpets, along the baseboard molding, under your heaters, on your furniture and on and under your matrices. Leave it over night then vacuum it up. Then sprinkle it under your heaters and dressers and long the walls. It is not toxic to the kids or pets. You can get Boraxo at Wal-Mart or any of the grocery stores in the laundry detergent department. I did it and within a week I was completely free of the fleas. He also told me to sprinkle it along my foundation to get rid of ants that come in. In the past 3 years I have not had a problem with fleas or ants for that matter and frankly I am in my glory. My youngest son and I are highly allergic to bug bites and I am a breeder of Samoyed dogs, plus we have cats, and ferrets, so being flea and tick free is a plus in our home. Once the fleas are gone I stopped leaving the Borax down, now I only use it once a month or so. I hope you have the same results as we did.
Hugs,
T.

Ugh, sorry to hear about that! I had this problem once--I went to a local herbalist and got eucalyptus oil and a bunch of neem, and put a bunch into two large boxes of baking soda which I let sit for about 24 hours. I then spread that on every surface that was carpeted or upholstered and then tarped everything for I think 48 hours (I can't remember.) I used a fresh vacuum bag, vacuumed everything up after the elapsed time and tossed the bag immediately. It killed all the living fleas adn the eggs as well. If you have an herbalist nearby, go ask them. It was a pain, but totally safe and left the house smelling like eucalyptus! I went to Angelica's in the East Village in manhattan. I didn't have any animals in the house full time at that time, so you'd have to double check about the safety, also for little kids.
Good luck to you--fleas are such a pain.

HI Aimee! I work at an animal clinic. Two products to use are Advantage and a spray called Siphitrol. Do not use any over the counter flea topical products as one, they dont work and two are not as safe for the animal. Advantage kills the flea's as soon as it comes in contact with the product and they don't have to bite the animal in order to be killed as in other products. It last for a month and then should be re applied till you get a good frost if you live in an area where that happends. As far as the spray, I know we sell it at our clinic but I don't know if its vet exclusive or not. Its safe and its just a light mist that gets sprayed and you don't have to leave the house like when you use a flea bomb. I usually do one room at a time. Make sure everyone and all the animals are out spray the room the furniture and curtains, open the windows for an hour then go to another room. This spray works GREAT!!! other than that just read the directions on the back of the can. It works better than other flea stuff because it kills all life cycles of the flea. Most people dont understand that every time a female flea takes a meal she layes hundreds of eggs then the eggs fall off on to your carpet and floors. Then depending on the enviroment it can take 6 months or so for the eggs to hatch. Let me know if you have anymmore questions!

Fleas in the house are awful and can be very stubborn. buy some flea spray from a vet and a flea collar to put in your vacuum bag. Spray your furniture and carpet and vacuum up.

Call your vet and get Advantage or Frontline for cats. They are by weight so know what "fluffy" weighs before you call. They may suggest something else but those are the ones I've used so it was the 1st name to come to mind. Treating the cat a few months will help curb the problem. Hopefully you are so infested that a "bomb" is necessary. A.

D.,
You have more friends now than you ever will in your lifetime. :) We had a HORRIBLE time about 7-8 years ago, and we only have 1 w-w carpet in the bedroom. I have several large lists of other stuff you can do, if you want to msg/mail me. I don't have them all off the top of my head, unfortunately.

DO NOT BOMB. You don't need hazardous chemicals to do this, just a bit of elbow grease and know how.

Vacuuming is certainly helping: Put a piece of flea collar in the bag. You can reuse the bag, just be sure if you empty it, do it outside. Vacuum at least 2x a day (exhausting, but then so are friends!) and put pillows (if affected) into a plastic garbage bag and seal it w/duct tape or better.

You've treated your pets, that's great. Are they indoor/outdoor? It's a little late in the season for this suggestion - nematodes - but you can check out the package directions and see how much warm weather they need to establish if you spray them on your lawn. We had them put down about 7 years ago, and this is the first year we've had a problem with bugs/slugs (but no fleas in the house yet from my active 14 yr old pup who rolls in the lawn :)

There's a lot more ,but my DS is waking and I have a million things left to pack before we leave!

Good luck,
M.

Hi D.! Fleas are no fun!! My neighbor had the same problem last summer, and they had a professional pest company come out and spray the house, and it still didn't stop it, because once the eggs hatched they were at it again! They had the same problem when they bombed their house themselves.

They finally put an end to the whole thing, when they put Frontline on their cat. You need a prescription for it from your vet, but it was the only thing that worked. The fleas all jumped to the cat for food and were killed instantly. That may work for you, since your case isn't that bad! You couldn't even walk in their house without having at least 3 or 4 jump on you, and they have hardwood floors!

Good Luck!

I had this problem too. Frontline or Advantage Plus will do the job. Frontline Plus. The Frontline kills the adult fleas. Frontline Plus has extra ingredient that kills the eggs and larvae too. You put it on your cat, and then your cat acts like a flea trap because they will jump on her and bite her and die. If you treat your cat with this and she's an indoor cat, and vaccuum often, the fleas will be gone without bombing. You will notice a drastic change right away, and they will be all gone within 3 months I'd say. good luck

DON'T BOMB THE HOUSE! I am a vet technician at a cat only hospital, so i deal with these questions on a daily basis!
Bombing just puts so many chemicals into the environment that you don't want your family to have to deal with - and it's not necessary unless there won't be a cat there to "treat" the house...
First thing you need to do is get your cat treated with a GOOD product (nothing from the petstore! those can be toxic - i've seen it too many times - and most of them don't work). Revolution, Advantage or Frontline (Revolution is the best for cats) are all great products that you can get from your vet. I think Advantage is even at some pet stores now though! (PLEASE DON'T BUY FROM PETMEDS! The companies that makes the products don't sell to the online pharmacies, so they're getting the products on the black market usually from oversees with no guarentee how they were shipped and stored and so often they are counterfeit products - i don't know how they're still in business!)
If you treat your cat for 3 months after those kittens leave you won't have to do any treatment of the house! I've never had a report that this didn't work!! The cat becomes like a walking "flea bomb". The reason you do 3 months is that eggs will hang out in your house sometimes for that long - but as they hatch they will jump on your cat and die before they can reproduce again!!

As for the kittens - if they are under 8 weeks, all you can do is give frequent baths in something mild like Dawn dishwashing detergent and while you're doing it brush them thoroughly with a flea comb to get as many fleas off as you can. That helps quite a bit but nothing will 100% be guaranteed to get rid of fleas except one of the good topical flea treatments, which they can't have until 8 weeks of age.

Hope that helps!! Feel free to message me with any questions :)

Hi D. -

My dog went to an emergency clinic once for seizures and came home with fleas. I had no idea until they started bitting me on the ankles. I did bomb my home. I went to Home Depot and read all the products available, and decided on a fogger. I did wash all the linens and put everything away in the kitchen off the counters. I also put flat bed sheets over all the kids toys and made sure all cabinet doors in the kitchen were shut tightly. I set the foggers off in the basement, the downstairs hall and the upstairs hall. It tells you how many to use for you home size. I bought the fogger that required the least time out of the house, I think it was like 6-8 hours. When we returned home I just wiped everything down with clorox wipes. Unfortunately I did have to do this twice. The other important thing I did was to first put Frontline on my animals. It killed the fleas on them within a couple of days. My Mom also told me to put a flea collar in my vacuum bag to make sure they didn't survive in there.
Good Luck!!
