My son has had some lactose issues for awhile. There are great soy products out now a days. Of course there is soy/lactose free milk (even off brands, which are cheaper) soy yo baby yogurts and even Veggie cheese! This is in the produce section at the HEB's. They have all different flavors of cheeses and you can get it sliced or shredded- my son loved these! Good luck!

I just copied some blogs and websites I reference frequently. My son has a cow's milk allergy so we have been cow's milk-free for almost a year. I am not a vegan, but I tend to modify the recipes to my liking by adding meat occasionally. I look for mainstream recipes that I can sprinkle cheese on top of for me and my husband. I also use soy milk for baking, and alternate between rice, almond and soy in cereal and for drinking. There are baking sticks that can be used in place of butter for baking cookies(Earth's Best), dark chocolate chips without milk, and sorbettos or dairy-free ice cream (Nada Moo is not bad). All in all, it has not been a terrible experience.

Both of my babies had problems digesting proteins in cows milk when they were young, so we were dairy free for a while (me too, since I nursed them). I don't know that I have any particularly great advice though. Be prepared for people to not get it. Just stick to your guns and it give it plenty of time for the changes to take effect.
You can get chewy kids calcium suppliments, since you'll probably be concerned about that.
Since you mentioned his weight, you're probably not too concerned with finding dairy-free treats, but ... HEB sells a greeat ice cream bar called Marry Me Bars. We're totally addicted to them. Also, if you google "wacky cake" you'll find a great recipe for a vegan chocolate cake. And it's super, super easy.

Are you trying to cut out cows milk proteins or are you trying to cut out lactose? Its not the same... For example, there is "lactose free cheese" but it contains cows milk proteins (butter fat).
