Help with Stinky, Stinky Kitty!!!

We adopted a stray some time back b/c she had kittens. She usually stays outside but we bring her in when it's cold or raining and have to keep her inside my DD's room to keep her away from our other cat (they don't get along). Anyways, it's been pretty cold the last few days so we had her inside. I had Julia change out the litter today and then a few hours ago we went to tuck my DD in bed and the smell knocked us out!!!! And there was NOTHING in the litter box at all and still the poop smell knocked me over! Our family cat does NOT have this issue at all. They eat the same food, use the same kind of litter (scoopable multicat) and I just cannot figure out why she smells so bad! Any ideas?? Are we just doomed to deal with a smelly cat? We can't take her to the vet until next month. She uses the litter box just fine. No issues there.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Just to note that no, the kitty didn't poo anywhere but her box. I'm sure of it.

Smelly cat, smelly cat, what are they feeding you?? No really, I dont know if cats do this, but my dog LOVES to roll in other dogs poo. I read that they think its like perfume. Maybe cats like poop baths too?

Cats that are outside eat dead animals and they get parisites very easily. Your cat probably has parasites or worms in her stool and that's why it smells so bad. Also, outdoor kitties may not like indoor litterboxes so she may be "thinking outside the box."

She probably needs to be de-wormed, which will help only until she's let outside again. Arm and Hammer makes a special litter that really helps with the poop smell.

Is it the physically the cat for sure or is the cat not using the litter box and "hiding the evidence"? If it's not the cat herself try getting a black light and shining it around the room to see where she may be going that isn't the litter box.
If it's actually the cat it could be a urinary tract infection or kidney issue, including kidney failure. If it is the cat and not going somewhere besides the litter box she needs a vet visit.
I hope you can find the answer and she's OK.

Does she have longer hair? Could some of the poop be getting stuck in it? It would just take a little (peeeyu!).

This is hilarious...we are dealing with this too. Bath her in lemon juice and water in a squirt bottle....they said it is a home remedey that will help.
They said the chemicals in these foam and wipe shampoos are just too much on a weekely basis. I am right there with you. Hopefully she does not have mites in her ears or a skin issue .......but should get a good bath.

Believe it or not, cats pass gas. Mine do it all the time! It smells just like they went poop.

Did the kitty poop somewhere else?? I know you mentioned taking her to the vet next month - hopefully to get her spayed as well. Bring in a fresh stool sample (small) so they can run a fecal test on her. You will probably be advised to get presurgery bloodwork done and the kitty will have a full exam. The vet will have other ideas and can help you get a plan in place. Hopefully you can make it in sooner.

Best of luck!!

I am so sorry to answer this, but my cat (who was also a stray) had cancer, which caused a ghastly smell. We didn't want to let her go, because she was so sweet, but she just continued to get sicker and sicker...the smell started about two years before we let her go.

I pray this isn't the case for your cat, but please, take her to the vet when you can.

By silica shake at petsmart. It will be the best four bucks you have ever spent. Trust me. I used to have three cats, and nobody could ever smell them because of that stuff.
