I need some suggestions about teething. My son is 9 months old and has no teeth yet. I have been suspecting that he is teething now for about 1 month. He has a terrible drooling rash and is constantly wanting to put things in his mouth. He has been waking up 2 times a night because his gums hurt him. Does anyone have any suggestions about what we can do to help soothe his gums and help with his drool rash?

What can I do next?

Hi - I know that my son had the rash too so I used Lanolin nipple cream on his face. It is a thick balm and stays on through the drool and is safe if he gets any in his mouth since you can put it on the nipple while you breastfeed.

Hi S., my daughter is 9 months as well and without teeth. We are having the same problems, however I found that for her, Lansinoh (I'm not sure on the spelling) the lanolin cream, helps heal her rash with out using harsh chemicals. As far as being up at night, I have given Tylenol once when it was really bad and it worked, otherwise I just rock her (probably not the best idea though).

Lots of bibs. Change them frequently so they don;t look disgusting. Tylenol and Pediaprofen (doseage on the bottles is OK, but docs can advise on better dosing according to weight) Kids can usually get more (so better pain control) if it is weight dosed.

Hi S., my son had an awful rash for months while teething and the only thing that finally worked was making a paste of baking soda and water and caking it on each night in the bath. He would sit and play for a while then we would rinse it off and as soon as he was done in the tub I would dry the area really well adn put on Aquafour (not sure of spelling) It cleared it up within days after nothign worked for months, and that cream is great for everything! They make a regular and baby version that I found at Walmart, it is a little pricey but so worth it! Also for the teething my son loved the Hyland's teething tablets. They are tiny white pill looking things that you rub on the gum and they disolve instantly. He was always immediately relieved and I liked it better than always giving him medication. I think you can get those at CVS. Good Luck

I use Hylands teething tablets for teething and sometime infant Tylenol as well. You can use them in combination without any problem. California baby Calendula cream is safe and great for any rash including a mild diaper rash. Good Luck!

Hi S.:
When my youngest (who is 16 months) was having a hurtful moment with her teeth, I used Baby Orajel nighttime and it worked wonders on her. Her teeth came in so differently than my twins (who are 4). Her bottom back teeth were coming in before some of her front ones. Hope this helps.

I have found that plain old diaper rash cream before bedtime really helps alot and during the day, a skin protectant like Vaseline on the chin helps too. As far as soothing his gums, I've used teething tablets which helped me maybe 50% of the time and I also gave my daughter pedialyte pops to suck on from the freezer. You could also dip a corner of a facecloth in water and then stick it in the freeze (although my daughter never liked this but I know others do). Good luck!

My 9 1/2 month old son also has a bad drooling rash. I recently discovered that dabbing a small amount of baby powder containing corn starch has really helped. I do it at night and sometimes before a nap.

Hi S. - We also use Hyland's teething tablets which are homeopathic and 100% natural (they also make a gel for the gums) and they've probably saved our sanity!!! They dissolve instantly so there is no worry about choking. Initially I would crush the tablets and use a rubber finger tip "brush" to apply the crushed tablets to our son's gums - it seemed to really soothe him - he liked the sensation on the gums. Now that he has a few teeth we just pop the tablets in!

We too give our son infant Tylenol pain reliever when he's really having trouble.

Good luck!

Hylands teeting tablets always worked for our kids and my friend used Aquaphor (cream) for the drooling rash and that worked well for them. Hope that helps.

Hi S.,

My son also had no teeth at 9 months and by 12, he had a mouthful. I use teething tablets (Walmart) that are herbal but work good for the discomfort. For the drool rash you can use elidel, which is a script from your pediatrician. Works great on both ends for rashes by the way. I can sympathize with working full time and having to get up; broken sleep has got to be the worse. I am eagerly awaiting that change too!

Good luck!

As far as the teeth while he is awake try frozen bagels. Or there are these great teething pouches make out of mesh that you can put frozen fruit in have him chew on it.

At night I suggest Tylenol

As far as the rash: Diaper cream! Zink is great healer of rashes.

My son had the same problem. Nothing I put on him would stay on long enough to protect all night long until I put the Lanolin nipple stuff on his cheeks and chin. I use Pure-Lan by Medella but my friend used Lanoshah (sp?) when I suggested it and she said it worked great too. My son's chin and cheeks used to be so raw they would get scaly, almost scabby, and this did wonders. I'd put it on when he was nursing his last time, just before putting him down. In a pinch, I've even used unmedicated chap stick or a vitamin E stick, once the worst had healed.

Clean the rash with mild soap and water and put bacatracin on it. And blot it dry every hour or so. Reapply a couple times a day. It works. Simple- effective.

Oh my gosh.......... we have had the drool rash problem here. I was told to first treat it with hydrocortizone to clear it up, which it did but then it came back, I did discover my child was drooling while she slept, which would wet the sheet, so what I do now, is before nap and bedtime, I put some aquaphor around her mouth, chin, upper lip and cheek area near the mouth. That has seemed to protect her skin and the rash as disappeared. She does however still drool in her sleep a lot, so when I go in to check on her, I move her out of the wet spot, between me doing that and using the aquaphor before she sleeps it has done well.
