If it's like thrush, you can get prescriptions for you both, and cut out sugars of any kind to give it less fuel..
so my son has had herpangina, a form of hand foot and mouth, virus for a week now. the fever has gone away and he's eating better. however, the problem is that i have a blister on both of my nipples and nursing has become extremely painful! i was just about in tears tonight. any advice and what i can do to easy my comfort. it's been painful for days to nurse, but today it was over the top.
i guess i should add, that my son is 16 months old now, so i've been nursing for awhile. i just need ideas on how to help my nipples. thanks :)
thanks for all of the great advice! it's been painful, but he is over it now and i'm still healing. The most painful part was when he was really sick and all he wanted to do was nurse. :)

I don't notice that any of these answers are geared towards your exact issue. They seem to give remedies for SORE nipples due to breastfeeding, but do not talk about the actual VIRUS that spread from your son to you. My son is 2 1/2 and still nursing and was recently diagnosed with herpangina. Within the week, I noticed a few ulcers on one of my nipples. Sounds just like your problem. So, what was the final result with your issue. Did you end up seeing a doctor? Did they just go away on their own? Please let me know asap as I'm thinking it might be time for me to see a doctor, myself.
Get yourself some motherlove nipple cream and slather it on between feedings. Works great and fast.
oh my god. i am so happy that you guys all talked about this. My 16 month-old has herpangina and a blister showed up on each of my nipples as well. such a relief to hear that i am not alone and that it will get better.
After your son is finished nursing wash & dry your nipples and then extract a little of your milk, spread around your nipples and let it dry. This worked for me!
I am so sorry for your pain! Whew..I completely understand. My nipples got so bad during breastfeeding I had to pump only for two days (even though she hadn't had a bottle yet) and then use the breast shields to nurse (the kind for inverted nipples) for a week so that my nipples could heal. All the books said she would have nipple confusion.she wouldn't go back to the breast.blah Blah...she had no problems at all. I also found that using nipple butter versus the cream helped me heal faster and using using the shield in my bra (the kind tht keeps anything frm touching your nipples) for a few hours a day helped as well.I was told (baby nurse) and read all of these things would "ruin" breastfeeding but when your pain is so bad that your toes curl and you break out into a sweat as soon as your lil one latches on, you have to do what you have to! :) After a week, everything healed I took off the shields she latched on no problem and we nursed for 16 months. Hope this helps!
You might want to try using a nipple shield. (You can get them at Babies R Us) That helped me alot when mine were cracking and bleeding, so I am guessing it would help with your blisters too. You poor thing. I am so sorry. Hope you both are on the mend soon.

Do you have Blebs on your nipples? They are whitish blister like spots that block the opening and are extremely painful.
It takes exactely one entire month for your nipples to stop hurting! But u must be nursing! It does go away!! (blistering,bleeding,etc...) But u must breastfeed threw the awful awful pain! Its sooo worth it tho! U can also get nipple butter to sooth nipples ask ur Dr.Put it in the fridge it feels great cold! The baby can eat it to its not harmful to them! I was given this in the hospital! I never thought my nipples would stop hurting. people would say “oh give It a week or two it will go away" YEAH RIGHT! Everytime my beautiful gorgeous son would nurse I would scream! I would make him jump! I felt sooo bad! I NEVER thought it would get better but it did! He is only 9 months and sooo smart and happy! I swear its because of his breast milk! That stuff is rocket fuel honestly! So good luck & stick to it!
The EXACT thing happened to me. It was a very hard time for me. Get green cabbage leaves and chill them in the fridge. Wear them in your bra. It will sooth your nipples. Lanilin cream for your nipples is important, keeping them aired out and if you can, sun your bare breasts for 15 minutes 2-3 times a day. Thank goodness you were still nursing! He probably would have gotten dehydrated and ended up in the emergency room! I ended up catching it from my toddler too... That was the most sick I have ever been as an adult! Just keep nursing, they will be healed in 10 days or so.
hard to say w/o knowing exact nature of pain, but generally homeopathic remedy Causticum 30C - every 20 min for the first hour and every hour after that, takes care of blisters.
Good Luck, you sound like a great mom! hope all is better for both of you soon!
