My 12 year old daughter is autistic, she has been in classrooms full of boys for years and is very lonely. Because of her age, she doesn't fit in anywhere. She just wants a friend, she is very sweet and pretty high functioning, comprehension is her biggest obstacle. Age is not all important but hoping for someone around her age. We are in the 101/ cave creek area. Anyone know of playdates or kid meetings anywhere, or have a child of there own in a similiar situation.

What can I do next?

Hello, S.,

I am a teacher at a very good Paradise Valley middle school located near the 101 and Tatum. At our school we also have a special program for autistic and communication disorders. I will ask the teacher of this program if she has a student in her class that she thinks could be a good companion for your daughter. Would this be helpful? If so, please e-mail me privately your contact information, and I will forward it to her.

My daughter is almost 11 1/2 yrs old. She is not autistic, however I feel she would be someone that your daughter may enjoy playing with. Maybe we could take them swimming together or to the park. It is worth a try. I live down near Cave Creek Rd and Carefree Hwy. Hope this helps.

Hi S.,
Have you contacted SARRC? (southwest autism research and resource center) Or Elaine Berkely from Frog's Landing who runs a social skills program for autistic/asperger's kids starting age 8 and up? They have group activities, call and ask her if there are any girls in the program. The website is:

Good luck. And know you're not alone.
