High Speed Internet

Okay, so we're still behind the times when it comes to our internet service. We had a dinosaur computer that wouldn't support high speed service but we've recently purchased a newer model that should do the trick. Do you ladies have any recommendations for which provider to go with. What has worked for you? What should I maybe avoid? Thanks in advance for your help.

What can I do next?

A lot depends on what is available in your area. At this point (I'm in a rural area almost in the middle of a soybean field), Hughesnet and broadband are my only choices, but Hughesnet is working out alright although we lose connectivity if a storm is in the right place between our dish and the satellite. If cable or fiber optics ever comes down our street, we'll go with them. Shop around. You can get some great deals if you want to bundle services (internet, phone, cable, etc).

If you can get Comcast or Verizon DSL, do it.
If you live in the boonies like we do, you are limited to satellite service. It's faster than dial up, but not by much.
YMMV

It depends on what is available in your area. We have Time Warner digital package deal with high speed internet, tv's, and a phone. We don't use the phone, it was just cheaper to have it in the package.

Our bill does run upwards of $170/month BUT, that includes 2 receivers, DVR, and we order movies on demand.

We've not had any issues, good service, and it is rare when the system is down.

I have Qwest internet. I recently dropped my phone service with them and just kept the internet. I thought I was saving money to bundle the phone and internet, but turns out I got a really good deal without a bundle. I pay $20/month (that has a $5 discount because I am a Verizon customer). They do not have the best customer service, but I have never had any issues with my internet.

usually cable internet is the cheapest and fastest when it comes to higher speeds. you should do some research about which companies service your area, because you might not have much of a choice. Comcast is the only service provider in our area so we have to use them. but if you have a choice I would definatly not go with comcast. Their service sucks, it is out all the time, and we even had an incident where they tore up our yard to put in a cable for our neighbors (they had the wrong adress and they never fixed the problem)
