L.P.
My boys are allergic to antibiotics and red dye in medication. The first reaction they had happened 7 days after they had taken their first dose of amoxicylin (the pink bubblegum stuff). I would call the doctor right away.
Last night my 17 month old broke out in tons of red bumps abd redness. She does not have a fever and she does not appear to be itchy. But it looks bad. The bumps do not have white heads. She is taking antibiotics for nine days now for an ear infection. But I did give her Gerber Arrowroot cookies for the first time in the las three days. That is pretty much the only thing she has had different. My question is, does this rash seem like a food allergy? She goes back to the doctor on Monday. Or could it be a rash that children can sometimes get after having fevers(she had them a few days about a week and a half ago), when we went to the doctor she had a heat rash from me holding her in the office and she got to warm(very sensitive skin). And the doctor was telling me that it was this certain rash that children can get after fevers. Yet it was gone by time we got home because she cooled down, lol. So is there anything I can do to maybe help this rash go away or reduce the redness? Thanks for your time!!! Oh, she does not have breathing problems and she is not vomiting either. I am still waiting for the doctor call back! The red bloches do not have blisters or white heads. Just red blotches and bumps from head to knee. I am going to take her in. Thanks!
I called her doctor several times left messages and I never got a reply. So when the hubby came home from work we took her to Urgent Care and they were wonderful. She had a reaction the the Amoxacillin(sp). So she has to take a steriod and she already looks better. Thank You for all your responces. I had a feeling that is what it was, but My husband and mother though other wise because the horrible rash showed at the end of her cycle of the antbiotics. They thought it was a food allergy. Once again thank you to all! Happy Holidays!!

I think that's something you'd need to have the doctor look at ASAP. Sounds like you know what to look for as far as a heat rash so its probably not that.
I'd be more worried about the antibiotics causing the hives, but it sounds like you're almost over that anyways. But its something to keep in mind.
To test to see if its the arrowroot cookies, you just have to simply not allow her to have that for 2 weeks and then offer them to her again and see if there's another reaction.
If she has sensitive skin you might wonder about the laundry soap, espically if the rash is where clothing comes in contact or the palms of her hands. My daughter had her hands react to a load of laundry my husband did when she was really small. Two things happened there, my husband was over packing the washer so the clothes didn't rinse well and the second problem was a new soap we were using. It was only her hands because only my and hubby's clothes had been washed, she still had clean clothes from the loads I had done with the old soap.
Hope that helps.
It could be roseola, which is harmless and common at that age. All 3 of my kids had it around that same age. Look it up on line and see if it fits.
i got hives from a medicine i was allergic to..i went to see the skin doc and he said to stop taking the meds ..and if i had taken them for one more day he would have had to send me to ER ..i would stop the antibiotics..call your doc or call urgent care...are the red patches moving? my hives kept changing..
She could be having an allergic reaction to the antibiotic. Is it hives/uticaria? If so, your MD will probably stop the antibiotic and flag her chart as allergic. This happened to my son with penicillin and ceclor. Be careful!!
It sounds like a reaction to the anti-biotic! I would discontinue it and consider her allergic to that anti-biotic. 90% of ear infection's are viral and she has probably already fought off the infection. Be sure to get her on some Acidophilus to replace the good bacteria that the anti-biotic killed off so that she does not end up with a yeast infection or thrush!
Just my opinion!
Best wishes to you!
If the rash spots get bigger, then it's probably hives and it's related to antibiotics. My daughter came out of the nursery with spots on her and we weren't sure what it was and then they got bigger and we took her in to the dr. and he asked if she was on antibiotics and we said yes (ear infection). He said to stop the antibiotics, that she's allergic. She ended up covered from head to toe with them. Not itchy just looked horrible! No fever either.
it might be a reaction to the meds for the ear infection. about a month ago my son was on an antibiotic for a sinus infection (amoxicillian) and he broke out in hives from that.
Where is the rash located? Is it all over her body, in the diaper area, on her extremities?
I have food allergies and will get itchy hives all over my body when I eat something that I am allergic to.
My daughter will get tiny red bumps in the diaper area often...diaper rash for her. She will also get deep purple and red (almost bruise like colored) large bumps and rash for about a week after she gets sick, fever or not. They don't itch or hurt and will appear suddenly then disappear within an hour or so only to have others appear in a different part of her body but mainly on her arms and legs. She's been sick about 3 times since birth and so we have tracked it and since she gets this everytime after she gets sick, we figure that just her body's way of flushing out whatever caused her to get sick in the first place.
Could also be a reaction to the antibiotics.
Does it look the same as when she got the "heat rash" in the doctors office? If so, then it's probably the same thing.
If that's the case, there isn't anything you can do about it. It's just her body running it's course to get rid of the bacteria that caused her to be sick in the first place.
It is always soooooo scary when things happen to your own child. You might want to look into a a skin patch, that I swear by. The patch is by Lifewave. The immune system is boost by 300%, it is truly amazing!!!! Rashes seem to disapeer within an hour!!! No drugs, no chemicals, no weird side effects.....Please look at my website for more info. Lifewave.com/kherihealth Please look at the Y-age glutathione patch. Let me know if you have any questions.
My son 23 months old, just broke out in hives on his cheek on Friday morning. We went to the urgent care on Saturday morning, after I saw some swelling in his hand. The Dr told me that as long as there are no breathing problems and he is active and "normal" then all we can do it watch it and give him Benadryl. now today, sunday, he looks like santa claus with red cheeks and now the hives are scattered over his body. of course, I am nervous...but what can I do, if i take him they are going to tell me the same thing. Any suggestions other then wait to see what happens?
either she is allergic from the antibiotic or she has chicken pox. not all allergies from food will make you vomit or breath difficultly. i would get her checked before monday and take the meds shes on with you.
If you can, go to the doctor and have it confirmed, but our son had the same thing. About 7-10 days after taking amoxicillin (the antibiotic for the ear infection), 10% of kids break out in a "non-allergic rash". You can google amoxicillin reactions to read more. Key things with this for our son were that he obviously felt better - he was running around, playing, etc., but just looked awful. This was way more traumatic for us than it was for him. Our doctor had us give him over-the-counter infant benedryl for the next few days, to speed up the rash going away.
Good luck! I hope this is just the reaction I described above & not something more serious!
hi, C.
Is she possibly taking a form of Penicillin? My daughters both have a slight allergic reaction to anything like Ampicillin, Penicillin, Amoxicillin, etc. and break out in what is called a "Penicillin rash". It's very common. This is what it sounds like to me. Good luck on finding out what it is!

My whole family has sensitive skin and allergies to something or another...so, with that being said the first time I had an allergic reaction to a food it was exactly as you've described.
I would take her to the doctor today, and have her examined. At this age, allergy tests might not be conclusive but, it's better safe than sorry.
Best wishes,
Deanna
I too have experienced this but not on my baby..I actually get the same thing every time I have a fever. I have been told by a couple of Dr.s that it is my bodies way of fighting the fever and that there is no cure but Benedryl should help the itching. If your daughter is having the same thing as me I would suggest not holding her a lot because the itching is the worst part. It is ok as long and you dont touch it but once it is scratched or rubbed the itching is so bad it almost hurts and the only way to get it to stop is to leave it alone and it slowly goes away. Hope this help.
Hi C.,
Not sure what your dr. said, but my daughter had a similar thing..Red blotches all over her neck, back, abdomen, arms...but no other symptoms. It turns out, the rash bothered me more than it did her. I didn't put anything on her skin, figuring as long as she had no other symptoms and wasn't bothered by it, I didn't want to just cover it with cream. After a few days, it was just gone and hasn't returned.
Please let me know what your dr. says. Good luck!
To have a piece of mind go for medical “diagnosis” but not the “therapy”. She will do beautifully with experienced homeopath utilizing classical approach.(experienced AND classical, both are very important)
Good Luck!

I am late in responding and I saw you already took her to urgent care and got it resolved. I was just going to say that it sounds like what my little guy had when he was about 22 mos old. He had a reaction to antibiotics after 8 days on it and broke out in hives that gradually worsened until it was so bad that his gorgeous little face looked disfigured. We had to watch him 24 hours because his face was so swollen (there was a risk it could affect his breathing). I avoid medications but we had to give him Benadryl and Claritin - and even with all of that it continued to worsen and it took several days before he started looking "normal" again. I hope it's not that bad with your precious daughter. It was a frightening experience, but he got through it and is no worse off for it - we just know we have to avoid penicillin, and any molds, now (unless he outgrows the allergy). You are fortunate that this is a colder time of year. This happened to our little boy during a heat wave and the heat made him terribly uncomfortable.:( Hope it all clears up for your daughter very soon!
I am glad to hear that she is doing better! Good luck! We have had success with our daughter on sulfa antibiotics, so you might mention that to your docs next time your little one needs some meds.
Might be chicken pox. They can get them even after taking varicella vaccine. My son just had it so it really sounds like that to me. They were big and red and later oozed and had blisters.
Could be roseola (rash after fever) or Hand, foot, and mouth (very common childhood illness, very contagious, looks like a bad rash but doesn't itch or bother your kid except maybe in the mouth). Your doctor will be able to let you know for sure though. If it is Roseola or an allergy it will probably be gone by monday. You may want to try to take pictures. If it was an allergy it usually would happen immediately on contact with whatever she was allergic to.
It's an antibiotic allery. Call the doctor and get her off it immediately.
My children got hives from something they were allergic to.
Horses, dogs, cats, strawberries were the main culprits.
my 15 mo old had the same thing and than it turned into eczema and it is taking its sweet time to go away. our dr told us to cover him with aquaphor from head to toe after he gets out of the bath. he said if it does not go away as easily than i can use cortisone cream. good luck
You did not say where she got the red bumps & redness?
Hives= will appear then disappear and pop up elsewhere on the body, randomly. It's "shape" can be dots or bumps or sometimes irregular shaped raised areas. An antihistimine (taken orally or a cream applied to the skin will help this). IF it is hives.
Rash= will appear and just be there and stay for awhile.
The causes for both, can vary....illness, allergy, topical, ingested stuffs etc.
Here are some links on it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rash
1) IF it is a reaction to the Arrowroot... which hopefully you "stopped" giving her...then it should subside and NOT appear again... since you are not giving it to her anymore.
2) Her antibiotics are also a "new" thing she is ingesting... check with the Doc on that or any side effects possible.
3) If your daughter had a fever... (but that was last week)... then, probably the rash is not due to that, because is was over a week ago. USUALLY... the "fever rash" (which is also called 'viral rash' or 'roseola' in some cases) will appear JUST AFTER the fever or illness has subsided, and usually after a "high" fever.
4) Your daughter's "rash" at the Doctor's office appeared as you were holding her, then went away by the time you got home. So to me... this is a "heat rash" kind of thing. Or, perhaps that area got sweaty... Heat rash is usually a bunch of small red dots.... look it up online...
If your daughter is being bundled up more than usual & layered in clothing (because is it winter time & colder now), then perhaps she is "too warm" and she is getting "heat rash"? This may be a cause... Many times, a baby/child is bundled up too much and is too warm.... you said your child has sensitive skin... perhaps this is a cause.
Or, some children get "red" rash like areas... due to the cold dry air & weather, and these patches are actually "dry skin" patches exacerbated by the cold.
Your Doctor should look at it and advise you...
All the best,
Susan
If a child develops a rash like you describe while on antibiotics, take her off of it immediately! A drug reaction rash is serious. I know, I have had it and so has one my children! The most common antiobiotics that cause rashes are the penicillins, erythomycin, and their close relatives. You need to report the rash immediately to the doctor and change antibiotics. You will probably also need to start your child on benadryl and maybe steroids and make sure that she never gets that medication again. You should also get a medic alert tag for the child to put in the shoes or necklace, or bracelet. A second time could result in a worse reaction. If she has any trouble breathing, call 911. I don't mean to scare you, but a drug reaction rash is serious and possibly life threatening!
This could be an allergic reaction to penicillin. My daughter developed such a rash a number of years ago, and it was caused by the amoxycillin she was taking for an infection. Check with your doctor!
Be careful and watch her, it could be an allergic reaction to the medicine. I myself have had this, one of my children has had this, and a friends child recently had this. It looks like it might be the start of chicken pox, but no white head, hardly raised from the skin, and covers a good portion of the skin. If it is an allergic reaction, there isn't much you can do. Make note of the medicine and next time ask for something different.
i she on amoxicillian? a couple months ago my little one was on amoxicilian for an ear infection and on day 8 or 9 he broke out in a head to toe rash. totally freaked me out, but i guess its very common and normal. doesn't mean they are allergic, but means the doc will watch closely next time they are on that particular antibiotic. if that is what it is, they will try and different antibiotic. go to the doc for sure! good luck,
corinne
